There are two different places people call “Downloads”: a browser’s download list and the actual folder on your computer. The list shows download records; the folder contains saved files. To open the folder, use Downloads in File Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS, or your Linux file manager; to locate a specific browser download, use the list’s option to show its containing folder.

Open the Downloads folder directly

Computer Default Downloads path How to open it
Windows 10 and 11 C:\Users\<username>\Downloads Open File Explorer and select Downloads in the left navigation pane.
macOS ~/Downloads or /Users/<username>/Downloads Open Finder and select Downloads in the sidebar.
Linux /home/<username>/Downloads Open your distribution’s file manager and choose Downloads. The label and layout vary by distribution.

Windows

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select Downloads in the left sidebar under Home or This PC.
  3. If it is not visible, select This PC, open your system drive—usually Local Disk (C:)—and browse to C:\Users\your-username\Downloads.

You can also click the File Explorer address bar, enter %USERPROFILE%\Downloads, and press Enter. This opens the current Windows user’s Downloads folder without requiring you to type the account name.

macOS

  1. Open Finder from the Dock.
  2. Select Downloads in the sidebar.
  3. If the sidebar item is missing, select Go in the menu bar, then choose Downloads.

In Finder, press Command + Option + L to open the Downloads folder directly. The standard user folder is ~/Downloads, where the tilde means your macOS home folder.

Linux

  1. Open your file manager—for example, Files on Ubuntu or Dolphin on KDE Plasma.
  2. Select Downloads in the sidebar.
  3. If necessary, browse to /home/your-username/Downloads.

Linux distributions can use different file managers and sidebar names, but the standard per-user location is usually the Downloads folder inside your home directory.

Open a downloaded file’s folder from the browser

This is usually the quickest solution when you know the file name but not where it was saved. A browser’s Downloads page is a download-history interface, not the physical folder; it can provide controls to open a file or locate it on disk.

Google Chrome

  1. Select the three-dot More button in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Downloads.
  3. Find the file and reveal its extra actions.
  4. Select Show in Folder to open its containing folder.

To open the file directly, click its name in the Downloads list. Chrome uses the computer’s default application for that file type.

To check or change Chrome’s download location, select More ⋮ > Settings > Downloads. The location appears there. Select Change to choose another default folder, or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading if you want to select a location every time.

Chrome’s usual default locations are:

  • Windows: \Users\<username>\Downloads
  • macOS: /Users/<username>/Downloads
  • Linux: /home/<username>/Downloads

These paths apply only if Chrome’s download location has not been changed.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Select Settings and more … in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Downloads in the left sidebar.
  4. Check the folder shown under Location.

To locate one particular file, open Edge’s Downloads interface and use its folder or open-location control beside the file. The exact control can vary by operating system and Edge version; it opens File Explorer on Windows or Finder on macOS.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

On Windows, Edge’s normal default is C:\Users\your-username\Downloads. On a work or school computer, an administrator may force a different download directory. A managed setting can also override your selected folder or the option to ask where each file should be saved.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Select the Downloads button in the toolbar. It is blue when there are unviewed downloads.
  2. Find the file in the panel.
  3. Select the folder icon labeled Show in Folder on Windows or Linux, or the control labeled Show In Finder on macOS.

For the complete list, select the menu button, then Downloads. Firefox opens its Library window. You can also open the Downloads panel and select Show all downloads at the bottom.

If the Downloads toolbar button is not visible, that does not necessarily mean the folder is empty. Firefox may hide the button when there have been no downloads during the current session. Open the Firefox menu and select Downloads to see earlier records.

To change Firefox’s save location, open the menu and select Settings—called Preferences in some installations. In General, find Files and Applications > Downloads. Select Browse or Choose beside Save files to, then select the folder you want.

Safari on macOS

  1. In Safari, select Window > Downloads.
  2. Alternatively, press Option + Command + L.
  3. Control-click the downloaded item.
  4. Select Show in Finder.

Safari commonly uses ~/Downloads, but do not assume every file is there. Safari’s destination can be changed, and a file saved through a Save dialog may have been placed elsewhere. The Downloads window is the most reliable way to identify the location of a specific Safari download.

Change where downloads are saved

Each browser has its own download setting, so changing the operating system’s Downloads folder does not necessarily change the browser’s configured destination.

Browser Settings path Relevant option
Chrome More > Settings > Downloads Change, or Ask where to save each file before downloading
Edge Settings and more > Settings > Downloads Check or change the location shown under Location.
Firefox Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads Use Browse or Choose beside Save files to.

Safari’s download-location controls can differ between macOS and Safari versions. If you cannot find the setting, use Window > Downloads and choose Show in Finder for an existing file.

When a download seems to be missing

  1. Check the browser’s download list. The file may have been saved to a custom folder rather than the standard Downloads folder.
  2. Use the containing-folder command. Choose Show in Folder, Show In Finder, or the equivalent location control instead of searching manually.
  3. Check whether the browser asked for a location. If “Ask where to save each file” is enabled, the file may have been saved to the Desktop, Documents, an external drive, or another folder.
  4. Check the file name and extension. A download can be easy to miss if the website gave it a generic name or if the operating system hides extensions.
  5. Retry an incomplete download. Firefox shows a retry control for failed downloads. Select its refresh-style button to try again.
  6. Review security warnings. Firefox may block files with messages such as This file contains a virus or malware, This file may harm your computer, or This file is not commonly downloaded.

If a file type opens immediately instead of remaining in the folder, Chrome may have been told to open that type automatically. Open Chrome’s recent download history, right-click the file, and clear Always open files of this type.

Do browser download actions delete the file?

Usually, removing an entry from the download list is not the same as deleting the file.

  • In Chrome, Remove removes the item from the Downloads page but leaves the downloaded file on the computer.
  • In Firefox, Remove From History removes only the record. Clear Downloads also clears download history without deleting the files.
  • In Firefox, the Delete action is different: it deletes the downloaded file from disk.

To reclaim storage, open the actual Downloads folder and delete the files there. Then empty the Recycle Bin or Trash if you need the space immediately.

FAQ

What is the default Downloads folder on Windows?

It is normally C:\Users\your-username\Downloads. You can open it with File Explorer or enter %USERPROFILE%\Downloads in the File Explorer address bar.

How do I open Downloads on a Mac?

Open Finder and select Downloads in the sidebar. You can also press Command + Option + L or use the path ~/Downloads.

Why is a file not in my Downloads folder?

The browser may use a custom folder, ask you where to save each file, or have saved the item through a dialog to another location. Open the browser’s download list and choose Show in Folder or Show In Finder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does clearing browser download history delete downloaded files?

No. Chrome’s Remove and Firefox’s Remove From History or Clear Downloads remove records from the browser but do not delete the files. Firefox’s Delete action does delete the file.

How do I find a download in Firefox when the Downloads button is missing?

Firefox can hide the toolbar button when there are no downloads in the current session. Open the Firefox menu and select Downloads, then use Show in Folder or Show In Finder.

Where does Safari save downloads?

Safari commonly saves them in ~/Downloads, but its destination can be changed. Open Window > Downloads, Control-click the file, and choose Show in Finder to confirm its actual location.

The Bottom Line

Use File Explorer’s Downloads folder on Windows, Finder’s Downloads folder on macOS, or the matching folder in your Linux file manager. For one particular file, the browser’s download list is more reliable: choose Show in Folder, Show In Finder, or the equivalent location command. Clearing a download-history entry usually does not remove the file from your computer.
