If the Send / Receive tab is missing, you are probably using New Outlook for Windows rather than Classic Outlook. Microsoft replaced that tab with Sync.
To check for new messages in New Outlook, select Mail (the envelope icon), open the View tab, and select Sync. You can also press F9.
Check for new emails in New Outlook
- Select Mail, represented by the envelope icon in the navigation bar.
- Select the View tab.
- Select Sync.
Outlook displays a sync-status message at the bottom of the message list. This manually checks for new mail and synchronizes your account.
The keyboard shortcut for the same operation is F9. If your keyboard has function keys assigned to hardware controls, you may need to press Fn+F9.

Why the Send / Receive tab is missing
New Outlook does not include the classic Send / Receive tab. Its manual synchronization command is located at Mail > View > Sync instead.
Instructions that say to click an Inbox tab and then click Refresh do not describe Microsoft’s current New Outlook interface. The current labels are Mail, View, and Sync.
New Outlook sends outgoing mail automatically
You do not normally need to run a separate send operation in New Outlook. After you select Send, Outlook sends the message automatically when the computer is online.
If the computer is offline, the message may remain unsent until the connection returns. New Outlook supports offline access and updates locally saved items automatically after reconnecting.

Configure offline email storage
New Outlook’s offline settings are available at:
Settings > General > Offline
Microsoft currently says offline access is enabled by default. The available settings include:

| Enable offline email, calendar, and people | Turn offline access on or off. Select Save after changing it. |
| Folders to save | Default; Default and favorites (the default); or Default, favorites, and recently used. |
| Days of email to save | 7, 30 (the default), 90, or 180 days. |
Offline storage is limited by available disk space. If the device does not have enough storage, New Outlook may save fewer items locally or disable offline access. An action that requires an internet connection may show an error or revert to the previously saved state.
If View > Sync and F9 do not work
If neither the Sync command nor F9 works, first check which Outlook application you opened. You may be using Classic Outlook, Outlook on the web, or Outlook.com rather than New Outlook for Windows.
Do not use the Classic Outlook troubleshooting steps unless the application actually has the classic ribbon and Send / Receive tab. In particular, Working Offline, Send / Receive > Work Offline, and Send/Receive All Folders belong to Classic Outlook.

Use Send / Receive in Classic Outlook
Classic Outlook has the tab that is missing from New Outlook. To check every configured account:
- Open the Send / Receive tab.
- In the Send & Receive group, select Send/Receive All Folders.
The shortcut is also F9.
To check only one account:
- Open Send / Receive.
- Select Send & Receive Groups in the Send & Receive group.
- Point to the account.
- Select Inbox.
Do not confuse Send All with Send/Receive All Folders
In Classic Outlook, Send All sends messages currently waiting in the Outbox. It does not check for new incoming messages. To send outgoing mail and check incoming folders, use Send/Receive All Folders.
Reconnect Classic Outlook if it says Working Offline
If Classic Outlook’s status bar says Working Offline:
- Open the Send / Receive tab.
- Select Work Offline to turn offline mode off.
Then run Send/Receive All Folders again.
Check mail in Outlook on the web or Outlook.com
In Outlook on the web or Outlook.com, you can either refresh the browser page or use the documented manual sync command:

Mail > View > Sync
F9 is also the shortcut for manual synchronization in Outlook on the web and Outlook.com.
Identify where the problem is
| What happens | Likely area to investigate |

| Mail works on the provider’s website but not in Classic Outlook | The local computer, Outlook updates, or account settings. |

| New Outlook shows no Send / Receive tab | This is expected. Use View > Sync or F9. |
Do not assume that the absence of the old tab means manual refresh has been removed. New Outlook still provides a manual operation; Microsoft changed its name and location.

Does F9 work in New Outlook?
Yes. Microsoft currently documents F9 as the keyboard shortcut for manual synchronization in New Outlook for Windows.
Why can I not find Send/Receive All Folders?
That command belongs to Classic Outlook. New Outlook replaced the Send / Receive tab with View > Sync.
How do I send an email in New Outlook?
Compose the message and select Send. When the computer is online, New Outlook sends it automatically; a separate manual send/receive step is not normally required.
How do I check only one account in Outlook?
In Classic Outlook, open Send / Receive > Send & Receive Groups, point to the account, and select Inbox. New Outlook does not use that classic menu path.

Where are New Outlook’s offline settings?
Go to Settings > General > Offline. There you can enable offline email, choose folders to save, and select a local retention period of 7, 30, 90, or 180 days.
The Bottom Line
The missing Send / Receive tab is normal in New Outlook for Windows. Use Mail > View > Sync, or press F9, to manually check for new mail. If those options are absent, identify whether you are in Classic Outlook or a browser version before following the corresponding instructions.
