You can play Minecraft without paying, but not by downloading an unrestricted copy of the current Java or Bedrock Edition. The legitimate free options are the official Java or Bedrock trial, the old Minecraft Classic release in a browser, or Minecraft Education’s demo lessons.
Each option has different restrictions. The Java demo lasts about 100 minutes, the Bedrock trial about 90 minutes, and Minecraft Classic is a much older version with only 32 blocks. None permanently unlocks the modern paid game.
1. Use the official Java or Bedrock trial
The Minecraft Launcher can provide a free trial to Microsoft accounts that do not own Minecraft. Which version appears depends on your platform, region, account, and launcher.
Java Edition demo on PC
The Java demo is the closest free test of the desktop version. It provides single-player Survival mode for five in-game days, approximately 100 minutes of real time.

How to start the Java demo
- Download and install the official Minecraft Launcher from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store.
- Open the launcher and sign in with a Microsoft account that does not own Minecraft.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition in the left-hand menu.
- Start the available demo from the Java Edition screen.
The demo is single-player Survival. Commands are disabled, and normal online server multiplayer is unavailable. LAN play is also restricted; Mojang’s support documentation states that only one demo account is permitted in a LAN game.

Bedrock Edition free trial
The Bedrock free trial is distributed through supported platform stores. Availability varies by platform and region. On PC, it can appear in the Minecraft Launcher after you sign in with a Microsoft account that does not own Minecraft.
The trial provides approximately 90 minutes of play, or roughly four and a half in-game days. It is limited to single-player Survival. Commands, multiplayer, and Realms are not available.

If the launcher shows only the trial
If you have already purchased Minecraft but still see demo or trial restrictions, the problem is usually account or license recognition rather than a free-version limitation. Check these items:

- Check whether a Game Pass subscription has expired.
- On Windows, repair the Minecraft Launcher if needed.
- Allow time for a recent purchase to synchronize.
- Restart the launcher after correcting the account, subscription, or purchase issue.

2. Play Minecraft Classic in a web browser
Minecraft Classic is an official browser version based on the 2009-era game. It does not require a Minecraft purchase or the modern launcher.
How to play Minecraft Classic
- Use a desktop or laptop with a physical keyboard.
- Open classic.minecraft.net in a current browser.
- Allow the page to run the game.
- Start building in the browser window.
The page requires keyboard input and browser support for WebGL and WebRTC. If either technology is unavailable, the game may display an error rather than load. Phones and touchscreen-only tablets may not work because the official page specifically requires a keyboard.
What Classic includes
Classic is a historical snapshot, not a free copy of the current game. It has only 32 building blocks, early Minecraft mechanics, and the bugs and limitations of that period. It does not support current Java or Bedrock worlds, Marketplace content, Realms, or the modern game’s multiplayer features.

3. Try Minecraft Education
Minecraft Education is a separate edition made for schools, teachers, camps, clubs, and other organizations. It is not the standard consumer Java or Bedrock Edition.

Option A: Start a free demo lesson
You can launch a demo lesson without an Education account:
- Download and install Minecraft Education for your device.
- Launch the application.
- At the Welcome to Minecraft Education screen, select If you don’t have an account, try a demo lesson.
Demo lessons can be replayed, but saving worlds and multiplayer are disabled. This is guided educational content, not unrestricted Survival mode.

The official download page lists versions for Windows, Chromebook, Android, Mac, and iPhone/iPad. The available version can change as the application is updated.
Option B: Use an eligible organization account
Minecraft Education also has a free trial for eligible organization accounts, such as qualifying Office 365 Education or Microsoft 365 accounts. A personal Outlook, Gmail, or personal Microsoft 365 account does not qualify.
- Install Minecraft Education on a supported device.
- Open the application.
- Sign in with your school or organization account, often your school email address.
- If the account is eligible, follow the prompts to begin the trial.
Some schools already provide Minecraft Education through a Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 subscription. In that situation, the school’s IT administrator controls whether your account has an assigned license.

Education trial problems
- Personal account rejected: personal Microsoft and Gmail accounts are not eligible for the organization trial.
- School account rejected: the school may have Minecraft Education but not have assigned a license to your account.
- Sign-in or multiplayer failure: school network filtering may block authentication, multiplayer, or lesson-library access.
- Missing normal Minecraft features: demo lessons do not provide ordinary Java or Bedrock worlds, unrestricted Survival, or standard Minecraft multiplayer.
What does not work
“The Java demo is unlimited”
It is not. The official Java demo lasts five in-game days, or approximately 100 minutes in real time.
“The Bedrock trial includes commands and multiplayer”
It does not. The Bedrock trial is single-player Survival, with commands, multiplayer, and Realms disabled.
“Minecraft Classic is the full game”
Classic is the 2009 browser release with 32 blocks and early mechanics. Playing it does not grant a Java or Bedrock license.
“Minecraft Education is regular Minecraft”
It is a separate edition with classroom-focused tools, educational content, and organization-based licensing.
“Game Pass gives permanent ownership”
Game Pass provides access while the subscription is active. It does not permanently transfer ownership of Minecraft to your account.

“A third-party launcher makes Minecraft free”
A third-party launcher cannot create a legitimate license. Avoid launchers or websites that promise paid editions through cracked accounts, stolen credentials, modified authentication, or license bypasses. These downloads can also contain malware or compromise your Microsoft account.
