Windows 11 has no universal setting to stop every laptop charging at 60% or 80%. Check Settings > System > Power & battery for Smart charging information, then use your laptop maker’s official app or BIOS settings if your exact model supports a charge limit.
How you set a limit depends on the manufacturer and model. ASUS, Lenovo, and HP provide different controls on some computers; do not assume a setting or menu path applies to every laptop in a product family.
Check Windows 11 first
Open Settings > System > Power & battery and review the battery status for Smart charging information. Microsoft says Smart charging implementations differ by manufacturer and device; a battery that stays below 100% while plugged in may be behaving as designed.
Windows power modes and battery reports are not charge-limit controls. For a charge ceiling, check the computer maker’s official support instructions for your exact model.

Search the manufacturer’s official support site using your exact model number and terms such as battery charge limit, charge threshold, or battery health. The control may be in a manufacturer utility or BIOS settings. If you cannot find model-specific instructions, ask the manufacturer rather than relying on generic registry tweaks or scripts.
Choosing between a 60% and 80% limit
| Situation | Practical consideration |
|---|---|
| Laptop spends most of its time plugged in | A lower supported limit, such as 60%, may suit your routine. |
| You regularly use the laptop away from AC power | An 80% limit leaves more unplugged runtime than a 60% limit. |
| You need the most runtime for a trip | Use the manufacturer’s full-charge setting if available, then restore your preferred limit. |
Microsoft Support recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges, keeping the battery roughly between 20% and 80% when practical, and avoiding high temperatures. For storage, Microsoft recommends roughly 40%–60%. These are general care recommendations, not a promise of a specific battery lifespan.
