Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ctrl-click does nothing | The presentation is not in Slide Show or Reading view, or the button is not being dragged. | Start the show, hold Ctrl, then hold the left mouse button while moving the mouse. |
| The normal pointer flashes on screen | The mouse moved before Ctrl was pressed. | Press and hold Ctrl before moving the mouse. |
| The laser disappears | Automatic mode hides it after three seconds of inactivity. | Move the mouse, or choose another pointer behavior from the Pen menu. |
| The audience sees notes or controls | The displays are assigned incorrectly. | Enable Presenter View and use Swap Displays. |
| The browser version has no Laser Pointer option | PowerPoint for the web exposes drawing and ink tools rather than the desktop laser command. | Use the Ink tools, or run the presentation in installed desktop PowerPoint. |
| Mobile pointing does not appear on the projector | The phone is not connected to the external display. | Use a compatible HDMI adapter, AirPlay, Chromecast, or Miracast connection. |
Tips for using the laser pointer well
- Use it briefly to direct attention, then stop moving it. Constant motion competes with your explanation.
- Point at the specific number, label, or section you are discussing rather than circling the entire slide.
- Test the pointer color against the actual projector or display before presenting.
- Keep the laser near the content. Sweeping it across the slide can make it difficult for the audience to follow.
- For permanent emphasis, edit the slide itself. Live pointer marks are temporary, and browser annotations are not saved.
