Facebook does not offer one universal poll button across every part of the platform. As of August 2026, Meta documents native polls for Facebook Groups and Facebook Stories; Messenger group chats also support polls. Personal-profile and Facebook Page Feed posts do not have a consistently documented native poll workflow.

The right method depends on where you want people to vote: use a Group poll for an ongoing discussion, a Story poll for quick feedback, or a Messenger poll to coordinate in a private group. Meta’s documented Boost post feature applies to eligible Page posts—not every type of Facebook poll.

Where Facebook supports polls

Facebook surface Native poll? Where to create it
Facebook Group Yes, if enabled by the group Desktop and supported mobile apps
Facebook Story Yes Facebook app for iOS or Android
Messenger group chat Yes Messenger or messenger.com
Personal-profile Feed No consistently documented native workflow —
Facebook Page Feed No consistently documented universal workflow —

Facebook features can vary by account, region, device and product surface. If a Poll option is absent, it does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account.

How to create a poll in a Facebook Group

On desktop

  1. Go to facebook.com/groups.
  2. Select the group where you want to publish the poll.
  3. Click Write something….
  4. Click Options in the lower-right corner of the composer.
  5. Select Poll.
  6. Enter the question and answer options.
  7. Click Settings.
  8. Choose whether to enable Allow people to choose multiple answers and, if appropriate, Allow anyone to add options.
  9. Click Post.

Use single-answer voting when you need one clear preference. Enable multiple answers only when more than one option can reasonably apply. Leave “Allow anyone to add options” disabled if you need a fixed set of answers.

When the Poll option is missing

The group may have polls disabled, or your ability to post may be restricted. A group admin can check the feature configuration as follows:

  1. Open the group from facebook.com/groups.
  2. Click Add Features in the left menu, below Group Settings.
  3. Find Polls.
  4. Click Add to enable it, or click Settings to modify or remove it.

An admin can also review post formats by opening Group Settings, selecting Edit beside Edit post formats under Manage discussion, changing the relevant setting and clicking Save. These controls are not available in every group.

Important Group-poll limitations

  • You cannot edit the poll question or options after anyone has voted.
  • The poll creator and group admins can add or delete options later.
  • If members can add options, the person adding an option automatically votes for it. They can remove that vote by selecting the checkbox again.
  • A poll in a group with post approval may not appear until an admin approves it.
  • Posting restrictions can prevent a member from creating or participating in a poll.

Edit or delete a Group poll

Before anyone votes, click Options beside the poll, choose Edit post, make the changes and click Save.

To delete a poll, the creator selects Options → Delete post and confirms. A group admin uses Options → Remove post, optionally provides feedback and clicks Confirm.

How to create a poll in a Facebook Story

Story polls must be created in the Facebook mobile app for iOS or Android; Meta does not document the same Story-poll workflow for desktop Facebook.

  1. Open the Facebook app.
  2. At the top of Feed, tap Create story.
  3. Add a photo or video, or create a new one.
  4. Tap Stickers in the upper-right corner.
  5. Tap Poll.
  6. Enter your question.
  7. Tap Yes or No to replace the answer text with your own choices.
  8. Tap Done in the upper-right corner.
  9. Tap Privacy in the lower-left corner if you need to change the audience.
  10. Tap Share to story.

The poll remains available with the Story for 24 hours unless you delete the Story earlier. People can see current results after voting. To review the results, open your Story and swipe up. The creator can see the vote totals and how each person voted, so a Facebook Story poll is not anonymous.

How to create a poll in a Messenger group chat

A Messenger poll is separate from a Facebook Group, Story or Feed poll. It is useful for choosing a meeting time, location or activity among people in a private chat. Meta documents the poll workflow on desktop web and Messenger.

  1. Open the group conversation on messenger.com.
  2. Click Options near the lower-left corner.
  3. Click Create a poll.
  4. Type the question and enter the answer options.
  5. Click Create poll.

To vote, click Vote, select an option or click Add option, then click Submit. To change your choice, click Change vote.

Can you create a poll on a Facebook Page?

Meta’s current Page-post instructions describe creating a standard post but do not list Poll as a universal Page Feed format. The documented Page workflow is:

  1. Switch to the Facebook Page.
  2. At the top of Feed, click What’s on your mind, [Page name]?.
  3. Create the post.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Review the post settings.
  6. Click Post.

Some Pages may show a Poll option because Facebook tests features by account or interface. Do not assume that every Page has it.

If your Page has no native poll, use one of these alternatives:

  • Ask the question in a normal Page post and request answers in the comments.
  • Create an image with labeled choices and ask people to comment with a letter or number.
  • Publish a Story poll from the Facebook mobile app.
  • Run the poll in a linked Facebook Group.

These are workarounds, not equivalent Page Feed poll formats.

Can you boost a Facebook poll?

Meta’s documented Boost post workflow is for eligible posts published by a Facebook Page. It does not establish a standard way to boost a native poll created in a Group, personal-profile Feed, Story or Messenger chat.

How to boost an eligible Page post

  1. Switch into the Facebook Page.
  2. Find the post you want to promote.
  3. Click Boost post at the bottom-right of the post.
  4. Choose the campaign Goal.
  5. Set the Audience.
  6. Choose the Total budget and Duration.
  7. Select the Payment method.
  8. Click Publish.

If Boost post is not displayed, boosting may not be available for that post. Eligibility can depend on the post, Page, account and advertising settings.

A practical Page strategy is to publish a normal post that explains the question and points people to the actual discussion or poll destination. If that Page post is eligible, you can boost it. Do not describe this as boosting a Group or Story poll itself.

iPhone and iPad fee warning

Meta says that, beginning in February 2024, an Apple service fee of 30% of the total ad payment, before taxes and local fees, may apply when boosting from the Facebook iOS app on an iPhone or iPad. Apple retains this fee. Use desktop or another supported payment route if you want to avoid making an in-app payment without accounting for the additional charge.

How to use a poll to encourage meaningful engagement

Ask a question people can answer immediately

Good poll questions are specific and relevant to the audience:

  • “Which tutorial should we publish next: Wi-Fi troubleshooting or printer setup?”
  • “Which feature would you use most in the next version?”
  • “Which meeting time works better: Tuesday at 10 a.m. or Thursday at 2 p.m.?”

Avoid vague questions, excessive choices and answers that overlap. If the choices are not mutually exclusive, enable multiple answers or rewrite the question. Meta says Feed ranking considers engagement such as likes, comments and shares, along with factors including post type and recency; this does not guarantee a poll will increase reach.

Use the vote as the start of the conversation

Add a short, optional prompt such as “Vote, then explain your choice in the comments.” The vote reduces the effort required to respond, while comments provide the reasoning that a poll cannot capture. This may produce more useful feedback, but Facebook does not guarantee that a poll or comment prompt will increase reach.

Post when your audience is active

Use your own audience data rather than relying on a generic “best time to post.” For a Page on desktop:

  1. Click your profile photo in the top-right.
  2. Click See all profiles.
  3. Select the Page.
  4. Open Professional dashboard.
  5. Click Insights.

Group admins can check group activity in the Facebook app by opening Menu → Groups → Your groups, selecting the group, tapping Manage and then Insights. Group Insights can include popular days, popular times, active members, top posts, posts, comments and reactions.

Measure the result beyond the vote count

For Page content, compare reach, impressions, reactions, comments, shares and clicks with similar posts. Meta defines reach as an estimate of how many people saw content and impressions as the number of times content entered people’s screens.

For Group posts, Meta’s engagement reporting can include reactions, comments, shares, photo or video views and clicks. Individual Group post insights require a group with at least 250 members. Group Insights can show top-post information in groups with at least 50 members.

Compare the poll with posts aimed at a similar audience and published under similar conditions. A larger number of votes is not automatically better if the answers do not produce useful decisions or follow-up discussion.

Poll engagement practices to avoid

  • Do not ask people to post unrelated words solely to trigger distribution.
  • Do not coordinate artificial comments, reactions or shares.
  • Do not use misleading choices to steer people toward a predetermined answer.
  • Do not change the wording after voting begins; Group polls cannot have their question or options edited after that point.
  • Do not call a Story poll anonymous when the creator can see how each person voted.
  • Do not promise that a poll will automatically increase reach, followers or sales.

Meta’s recommendation guidance identifies coordinated comment networks designed to artificially increase engagement and distribution as low-quality behavior that may be excluded from recommendations. The goal should be useful feedback and genuine discussion, not an inflated activity count.

FAQ

Can I create a poll on my personal Facebook profile?

Facebook does not currently document a consistently available native poll workflow for ordinary personal-profile Feed posts. You can use a normal text post, an image with labeled choices, a Story poll or a Group poll instead.

Why is the Poll option missing from my Facebook Group?

The group may not have the Polls feature enabled, the group may restrict post formats, or your posting privileges may be limited. An admin can check Add Features under Group Settings and review Edit post formats.

Can Facebook Story polls have more than two answers?

Meta’s documented Story workflow starts with Yes and No, which you can customize. The documented interface does not describe the same multi-option setup available for Group polls.

Are Facebook polls anonymous?

No assumption of anonymity is safe. For Story polls, the creator can see vote totals and how each person voted. Check the specific poll surface and audience before voting.

Can I edit a Facebook Group poll after someone votes?

No. Once anyone has voted, the poll question and options cannot be edited. The poll creator and group admins can still add or delete options under the available controls.

Can I boost a Facebook Group or Story poll?

Meta’s documented Boost post workflow applies to eligible Facebook Page posts. It does not document boosting a native Group or Story poll through the standard Page-post boost flow.
