1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows 11 does not provide an Open file location command for the wallpaper displayed in Settings. For a regular Picture background, check the Registry for the original file path; for a slideshow, check its selected folder or theme file. Windows Spotlight uses managed image assets, while the Themes folder may contain cached copies rather than the original file.
First, check the active mode at Settings → Personalization → Background. You can also right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Personalize.
Find the original file for a Picture wallpaper
If Personalize your background is set to Picture, the Registry usually contains the full path to the selected image.
- Open Start, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
- Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You can paste the path into Registry Editor’s address bar. If the address bar is missing, enable it from View → Address Bar. - In the right pane, double-click the value named Wallpaper.
- Read or copy the path shown in Value data. It normally contains the full path to the wallpaper file, such as
C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\wallpaper.jpg.
Paste the copied path into File Explorer’s address bar to open the file’s folder. To open the file directly, include its extension and press Enter.

Check the cached wallpaper copy
If the Registry path points to a file that no longer exists, Windows may still have a rendered copy. Open File Explorer, paste %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes into its address bar, and press Enter.
Look for TranscodedWallpaper. This Windows-generated display copy normally has no .jpg or .png extension, and it is not necessarily the original image. If needed, make a backup copy, add .jpg to the copy’s name, and try opening it. Renaming does not guarantee that an image viewer will recognize the format.
The same folder may contain a CachedFiles folder with additional cached wallpaper images. These may help recover an image whose original file was moved or deleted, but their names and contents are managed by Windows.
| Location | What it usually contains | Is it the original? |
|---|---|---|
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, value Wallpaper |
The selected picture’s path | Usually, for a normal Picture background |
%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper |
A rendered wallpaper copy | No; it is a cache |
%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\CachedFiles |
Other cached wallpaper images | Not necessarily |
Find the folder used by a slideshow
A slideshow uses a folder of images rather than one permanent wallpaper file. Windows changes the displayed image according to the configured interval and shuffle setting.

If the folder is not obvious, inspect the user theme files in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes. Open the relevant .theme file in Notepad and look for a section named [Slideshow]. Useful entries include ImagesRootPath=C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Slideshows, Item0Path=C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Slideshows\image1.jpg, and Item1Path=C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Slideshows\image2.jpg.
ImagesRootPath identifies the slideshow’s image folder, while Item0Path, Item1Path, and similar entries identify individual images. Environment-variable substitutions may appear in these paths. Theme-file slideshows do not include images inside subfolders. System theme files are stored separately at %WinDir%\Resources\Themes.
When the background is Windows Spotlight
Windows spotlight is not a local picture selected through the normal file picker. It downloads and manages changing images, displaying a new image from around the world periodically.

Different wallpaper on another monitor or virtual desktop
With multiple physical displays, Windows 11 can apply one picture to every monitor or assign different pictures to individual displays. A slideshow can also show a different image on each screen. The Registry path may therefore not identify the image visible on a particular monitor.
Windows also lets you right-click an image under Recent images and choose Set for all desktops or assign it to a specific virtual desktop. Per-monitor background configuration is not supported with multiple virtual desktops, and slideshow backgrounds are not supported with multiple virtual desktops.

If the original wallpaper file was moved or deleted, the Registry may retain its old path. Windows may continue displaying a cached copy temporarily, then switch to a blank, black, or different background after a restart or refresh.
Before deleting anything, copy files you may want to keep from %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes. For a cache-related problem, Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting guidance recommends deleting the TranscodedWallpaper files and the CachedFiles folder there, then restarting Windows so it can recreate the display cache. Back up the files first because this may remove recoverable copies.
If the cache is repeatedly recreated with the wrong image, wallpaper-history entries may also be involved. The relevant Registry key is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Wallpapers. Entries named BackgroundHistoryPathXXX are associated with wallpaper-history troubleshooting. Export the key before changing or deleting values, since Registry edits can affect your user profile.

Check whether an organization controls the wallpaper
On Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions, an administrator can enforce a wallpaper through Group Policy. The Desktop Wallpaper policy applies beginning with Windows 11 version 21H2, build 10.0.22000.
Open the Local Group Policy Editor and browse to User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Desktop\Desktop. Open the Desktop Wallpaper policy. A configured policy uses a fully qualified local or UNC path, such as C:\Windows\web\wallpaper\home.jpg or \\Server\Share\Corp.jpg.
When this policy is active, users cannot choose a replacement wallpaper. If the specified file is unavailable when the user signs in, Windows may show no wallpaper. The policy does not apply to Remote Desktop server sessions.
The corresponding policy value is located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. Look for the value named Wallpaper. On a work or school computer, check with the administrator before removing this setting.
FAQ
Where is the current wallpaper stored in Windows 11?
For a normal Picture wallpaper, check HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop in Registry Editor and read the Wallpaper value. Windows commonly keeps a rendered copy at %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper.

- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Why does TranscodedWallpaper have no file extension?
It is a Windows-generated cache file, not necessarily the original image selected by the user. It normally has no .jpg or .png extension. Copy it before experimenting with a renamed version.
How do I find a slideshow wallpaper’s location?
Check Settings → Personalization → Background while Slideshow is selected. For more detail, inspect a .theme file in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes and look in its [Slideshow] section for ImagesRootPath and ItemXPath entries.
Can I find the original file used by Windows Spotlight?
Not reliably through the normal wallpaper Registry value. Spotlight downloads and manages changing assets rather than using one user-selected local file. Use a screenshot if you need to preserve the image currently displayed.
What if the Registry path points to a missing file?
Check %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes and its CachedFiles folder for a recoverable copy. Then choose a replacement image in Settings so Windows records a valid path.
The Bottom Line
For a standard Windows 11 picture wallpaper, check HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop → Wallpaper. Treat TranscodedWallpaper and CachedFiles as recovery caches, not guaranteed originals. Slideshow and Spotlight use different systems, so their locations cannot be identified with the same Registry value.
