To create a shortcut in Windows 11, right-click an empty area of the desktop, choose New > Shortcut, follow the prompts, and finish the wizard. For installed apps, you can drag an app from Start > All; for existing files or folders, use Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

Create a shortcut for an installed app
Drag the app from Start

Use the keyboard-accessible AppsFolder route
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter
shell:AppsFolderand press Enter. - Navigate to the app.
- Press Shift + F10 to open its context menu.
- Select Create shortcut, then confirm that Windows should place it on the desktop.
Create a shortcut for a file or folder
- Open File Explorer and browse to the file or folder.
- Right-click the item.
- Select Show more options, if needed.
- Select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
Some installations show the full context menu immediately, so you can go straight to Send to.
Create a shortcut for a web page
- Open the web page in a browser.
- Find the site-information icon beside the address. Depending on the browser, it may appear as a lock or another site icon.
- Drag that icon to the desktop.

Some installations display the full context menu immediately. Right-click the file or folder and look for Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) without opening another menu.
