CMD can check activation, install a genuine key, and start activation—it cannot create a Windows license.
If the PC was previously activated, you may be able to reactivate it without manually entering a key by connecting to the internet and signing in with the Microsoft account linked to its digital license.
Check whether Windows 11 is already activated
Before trying to activate Windows, check the current license state. Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Run this command:
cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /xpr
The result tells you whether the installation is permanently activated or has an expiration date. For more information, run:

cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /dli
cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /dlv
/dli displays abbreviated license information, while /dlv displays detailed licensing and activation information. These commands use slmgr.vbs, Windows’ built-in licensing-management tool.
Check the installed Windows edition
Activation depends on the edition. A Windows 11 Home license will not activate Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education.
From an administrator Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
Common results include:

You can also check the edition at Start > Settings > System > About, under Windows specifications.
Reactivate Windows 11 with a digital license
A digital license is the supported way to activate Windows without manually entering a product key. It is still a genuine license; it is simply associated with the device or Microsoft account rather than being typed into the activation dialog.
This may apply if:
- Windows was previously activated on the same computer.
- The PC was upgraded from an activated Windows installation.
- Windows was purchased through the Microsoft Store.
- The digital license was linked to your Microsoft account.
- Connect the PC to the internet.
- Sign in to Windows with the Microsoft account associated with the license.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Check the activation status.
- If activation was lost after a hardware change, select Troubleshoot and follow the Activation troubleshooter prompts.
Windows may activate automatically after it contacts Microsoft’s activation service. If the installation was reinstalled, make sure it is the same edition as the license. For example, a digital license for Home will not activate a newly installed copy of Pro.
Activate Windows 11 with a genuine product key using CMD
If you obtain a valid 25-character key for the installed edition, you can use Command Prompt to install it and request activation.

In an administrator Command Prompt, run:
cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Replace the placeholder with your actual key. Then attempt online activation:

Finally, verify the result:
cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /xpr
/ipk installs or replaces the product key. It does not make an invalid, blocked, or mismatched key valid. /ato only attempts activation using an eligible key, digital entitlement, or authorized activation configuration.
You can also confirm the result at Start > Settings > System > Activation.
Where to find a key when Windows came with the PC
For a factory-installed copy of Windows, check the computer’s packaging, purchase documents, Certificate of Authenticity, or the manufacturer’s support records. Some manufacturer-installed keys are stored in the device firmware and are detected automatically during installation.
If Windows came with the computer but activation fails, contact the manufacturer. If you reinstall Windows, select the same edition that originally came with the device.

What about KMS commands and generic keys?
KMS activation is legitimate only when the computer belongs to an organization with volume-licensing rights and an authorized Key Management Service host or Active Directory-based activation. It is not a free activation method for personal retail copies of Windows.
Microsoft publishes Generic Volume License Keys (GVLKs), including a Windows 11 Pro key commonly shown online:

This is not a free retail license. A GVLK only configures a volume-licensed Windows client; it requires the organization’s authorized activation infrastructure. Entering it on an ordinary retail installation will not activate Windows.
On an organization-managed volume client, the normal activation attempt is:
cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
The device must be able to locate the organization’s KMS host through the company network and DNS configuration. Using scripts that point Windows at an unknown internet KMS server is unauthorized and can expose the PC to malware or licensing changes.

cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /rearm
It is not. /rearm resets licensing timers in supported servicing and testing scenarios. It does not provide a license, convert an unlicensed installation into a permanently activated copy, or replace a product key. Repeatedly resetting a grace period is not activation.

Microsoft notes that phone activation is unavailable for Windows 11 Pro for Workstations and Windows 11 Pro Education; those editions must be activated over the internet.
Activation after replacing the motherboard
A major hardware change, particularly a motherboard replacement, can break the association between the device and its digital license. If the license was linked to your Microsoft account:
- Connect to the internet and sign in with that Microsoft account.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose the option indicating that the device’s hardware was recently changed.
- Select the matching device and follow the prompts.
If the license was not transferable or was not linked to the account, you may need a new license or help from the computer manufacturer.

- Reactivate an existing digital license.
- Install a valid product key that matches the Windows edition, then run
/ato. - Use an authorized organization’s KMS or Active Directory-based activation system.
Commands such as /rearm, unauthorized KMS scripts, and generic volume keys do not create a valid retail activation.

Can I activate Windows 11 permanently with CMD and no key?
No. CMD cannot create a Windows license. Permanent activation requires a valid product key, an existing digital license, or an authorized organization’s volume-activation system.
How do I activate Windows 11 without entering a product key?
