Dell Command | Update (DCU) is a standalone Dell utility for commercial Dell computers. It identifies the computer and finds Dell-issued BIOS, firmware, driver, and application updates; you can install them through its graphical interface or automate updates with its command-line interface. It supports Windows 11 on Intel and ARM systems.
To download it, go to Dell Drivers & Downloads, identify your computer, find the DCU package, and run its installer. DCU is separate from Dell Update, SupportAssist, and Dell Command | Monitor.
What does Dell Command | Update do?
After identifying the Dell computer, DCU compares installed component versions with Dell’s available packages. It can download and install updates for items such as:
- BIOS
- Chipset and other device drivers
- Firmware
- Network, audio, graphics, storage, and input devices
- Dell applications
- Some Dell docking-solution components
This makes DCU useful after a clean Windows installation, but it is not a replacement for getting the initial network connection working. The computer needs Windows and network connectivity before DCU can retrieve updates. Some updates also require the AC adapter to be connected.

Is Dell Command | Update supported on Windows 11?
Yes. Dell’s current documentation lists Windows 11 support on Intel and ARM systems. Starting with DCU 5.1, the application supports both Intel and ARM processor architectures.
Dell also lists support for its Universal Windows Platform application on Windows 10 from Redstone 1, build 14393, onward, as well as Windows 11.
DCU variants: Universal Windows Application and Classic
Dell documents two application variants:
| Variant | Name shown in Windows |
|---|---|
| Universal Windows Application (UWP) | Dell Command | Update Windows Universal Application |
| Classic | Dell Command | Update |
To check which one is installed, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. The name shown there identifies the variant.
Which is the latest DCU version?
Dell’s download article lists DCU 5.7 as its latest release, with an April 2026 release date for Intel and AMD processors and May 2026 for ARM processors.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →However, Dell’s current Version 5.x User’s Guide contains a section titled “What’s new in Dell Command | Update Version 5.7.1.” Dell’s pages are therefore inconsistent: the download article says 5.7, while the user guide documents 5.7.1. Check the version displayed on the package you download rather than assuming 5.7 is the newest available build.
Check the .NET requirement before installing
The required .NET version depends on the DCU installer:
| Dell documentation or package | Reported requirement |
|---|---|
| DCU 5.7 download article | .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0.8 through 8.0.25 |
| DCU 5.7.1 User’s Guide | Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0, version 10.0.8 or later, for x64 or ARM64 |
This is another conflict in Dell’s current documentation. Match the runtime to the exact installer package. If the required runtime is missing or below the minimum, installation may stop. A silent installation can record the missing prerequisite in its log.

Install DCU on Windows 11
For the current Universal Windows Application installer, the setup sequence is:
- Double-click the downloaded .exe file.
- Select Install.
- On the Welcome screen, select Next.
- Accept I accept the terms in the license agreement, then select Next.
- On Begin Install, select Install.
- On Installation Complete, select Finish.
- Select OK.
Dell says a restart is required after installation. You can defer it, but it must eventually be completed. On the referenced package page, application installation is expected to take approximately 40 seconds or less, excluding downloads and any required restart.
Run the first update scan
- Open Dell Command | Update from the Start menu.
- On the Welcome screen, select CHECK.
- Wait while DCU checks the computer’s inventory and searches for component updates.
- If updates are found, select VIEW DETAILS.
- Review the list on the Customize Selection screen.
- Optionally select Automatically restart system (when required).
- Select INSTALL.
If DCU finds nothing that matches the current settings, it displays This system is up-to-date. Select CLOSE to exit.
Be careful when stopping an installation: selecting CANCEL does not roll back updates that have already been applied. Updates already installed remain installed.
Configure DCU settings
General settings
Open Settings from the title bar. From there you can:
- Use Browse under Download File Location to change the update download folder.
- Select New under Update Source Location to add an update source.
- Configure Use current Internet proxy setting or Custom proxy setting.
- Enable Use Proxy Authentication.
- Allow Use internet connection if proxy fails.
- Choose whether to allow Dell to collect information for product improvement.
Select OK to save changes or CANCEL to discard them. DCU automatically deletes update files from its configured download location after installing them.
Update schedule
Go to Settings > Update Settings. Under Automatically check for updates > Check for updates, select:
- Weekly Updates
- Monthly Updates
- Daily Updates
When updates are found, DCU can be set to Notify Only, Download Updates, or Download and install updates. The same area includes options for installation deferral, system-restart deferral, automatic reboot, notifications, and retry attempts for failed updates.

- Quiet Scissor-Switch Keys: Low-profile scissor switches reduce typing noise in coffee shops, open offices, and shared rooms while keeping each keystroke comfortable and controlled
If a selected monthly date does not exist—for example, the 31st in a 30-day month—DCU installs the updates on the last day of that month.
Update filters
Open Settings > Update Filter. Under What To Download, choose one of these:
- Updates For This System Configuration (Recommended)
- All Updates For System Model
You can further filter by recommendation level, update type, and device category. These filters do not apply to Dell docking-solution updates. A filtered scan can legitimately report This system is up-to-date even when other packages exist for the model.
Use DCU from Command Prompt
The command-line interface is intended for automation and deployment. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, then run:
cd “%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Dell\CommandUpdate”
dcu-cli.exe /help
The help output shows the commands and options supported by the installed version. DCU does not restart the computer automatically from the CLI unless reboot behavior is enabled with -reboot=enable.
Plan for administrator rights, AC power, and a controlled reboot when deploying BIOS or firmware updates across multiple computers.
Silent installation
For the UWP installer, run an elevated command prompt and use:
Dell-Command-Update-Application-for-Windows_xxxxx_WIN_y.y.y_A00.EXE /s

For the installer documented as DCU 5.7.1, Dell adds IGNOREOOBE=”1″ to bypass the default one-hour Out-of-Box Experience quiet period:
Dell-Command-Update-for-Win32_xxxxx_WIN64_5.7.1_X00.EXE /s /v” /qn IGNOREOOBE=”1″”
Recommended Free Tools
Dell describes that parameter as useful for enterprise imaging and provisioning rather than ordinary interactive installation.
What changed in DCU 5.7 and 5.7.1?
- Local update blocking: DCU 5.7 can block selected software updates. Blocked packages no longer appear as recommended updates and are skipped during scans or installation.
- Download throttling: Limit Download Rate accepts a value from 1 to 999 Mb/s. It affects new downloads, not downloads already in progress.
- Ring Deployment: administrators can use latest or stable driver-update rings.
- CLI configuration: DCU 5.7 adds options including -localblockedswb, -clearlocalblockedswb, -throttle, -throttlelimit, and -ringdeployment.
- Enterprise configuration: with ADMX configured or enabled, additional options include BIOS-password, catalog-location, XML, and proxy-password settings.
- 5.7.1: Dell lists the IGNOREOOBE=”1″ installer option plus security, reliability, performance, and update-detection improvements.
Common DCU problems
| Problem | Likely action |
|---|---|
| Installer stops because of a prerequisite | Check whether the package requires .NET Desktop Runtime 8 or .NET Desktop Runtime 10. Install the version required by that exact package. |
| “Unable to retrieve computer inventory Information” | Restart Windows, verify Dell services are running, and retry the inventory scan. If it persists, use Dell’s DCU troubleshooting guidance. |
| No drivers appear after a clean Windows installation | Install a working network driver and establish connectivity first. DCU cannot download packages without network access. |
| An update will not install on battery power | Connect the Dell AC adapter. Some BIOS and firmware packages require external power. |
| Updates are not shown | Review Settings > Update Filter, FIPS mode, and whether the update is for a dock. FIPS-incompatible updates are hidden, and filters do not apply to docking-solution updates. |
| Dell Client Management service becomes disabled after manual installation | Dell documents a conflict involving Dell Client Device Manager 1.2 and DCU 5.7. Its recommended recovery is to uninstall both products, then reinstall DCU 5.7. |
| A restart is still pending | Restart Windows. Canceling the DCU operation does not undo packages that already installed. |
DCU compared with other Dell utilities
DCU is aimed at managing updates on Dell commercial client systems. It should not be confused with:
- Dell Update: a different Dell update product.
- SupportAssist: Dell’s broader support and diagnostics application.
- Dell Command | Monitor: a monitoring and hardware-management product rather than the DCU update utility.
Should you install Dell Command | Update?
DCU is a practical choice if you want one Dell-supported tool to manage BIOS, firmware, drivers, and Dell applications on a Windows 11 commercial computer. Use the recommended system-configuration filter for routine maintenance, connect AC power before firmware work, and schedule restarts rather than allowing an update to interrupt active work.
For business deployment, use the CLI, logs, ADMX policies, download throttling, update blocking, and ring deployment features. Before deploying broadly, confirm the installer version and its .NET prerequisite because Dell’s current 5.7 and 5.7.1 documentation does not state the same requirements.
