A wired Xbox 360 controller uses its USB cable. A wireless Xbox 360 controller requires a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows; it does not connect through ordinary PC Bluetooth settings.
Windows normally detects the controller or receiver and installs a driver automatically. If nothing appears, use Windows Update, Device Manager, and the connection checks below.
Before you start
| Controller type | What you need |
|---|---|
| Wired Xbox 360 controller | The controller’s USB cable and a working USB port |
| Wireless Xbox 360 controller | A compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows, connected directly to USB |
Do not confuse an Xbox 360 wireless receiver with the newer Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. They are different accessories, and Microsoft’s documentation for the newer adapter does not establish that it works as an Xbox 360 receiver. Microsoft’s documentation is about the newer adapter.
The instructions below cover Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical support, or security fixes for it. If the PC supports it, Windows 11 is the safer long-term choice. Microsoft’s hardware guidance covers both versions.

Use a wired Xbox 360 controller
- Turn on the PC and sign in to Windows.
- Plug the controller’s USB cable directly into the PC. Avoid an unpowered USB hub while testing.
- Wait several seconds. Windows will usually detect the hardware and install its driver automatically.
- Open the game you want to play and select the controller in its input settings, if the game provides that option.
If the controller is not detected, unplug it, wait briefly for Windows to unload the driver, and reconnect it. Try a different USB port, preferably one connected directly to the PC rather than through a hub. Microsoft recommends these USB troubleshooting steps.
Use a wireless Xbox 360 controller
- Connect the Xbox 360 wireless receiver directly to a USB port on the PC.
- Turn on the controller.
- Press the receiver’s connection button, then press the controller’s connection button.
- Wait for the controller and receiver to connect.
- Allow Windows time to detect the receiver and install its driver.
If the receiver is not detected, move it to another USB port and temporarily remove any USB hub from the setup. A receiver that lights up is not necessarily working correctly: the USB connection, driver, cable, power, or receiver hardware can still be defective.
Windows 11 does not use the ordinary Bluetooth pairing screen for an Xbox 360 wireless controller. The wireless receiver is the relevant connection hardware. Also check that the receiver is genuinely an Xbox 360 receiver for Windows rather than a different Xbox wireless accessory.
Manually add the device in Windows
Windows normally adds connected hardware automatically. If it does not, Microsoft provides a manual add-device path.

These menus are useful when Windows has not added an external accessory automatically. They cannot repair a damaged receiver, a bad USB cable, or an incompatible wireless adapter.
Install or update the controller or receiver driver
Most hardware drivers arrive through Windows Update. First, check for updates:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates and restart the PC if Windows requests it.
You can also update the device from Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category in which Windows has placed the controller or receiver.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If Windows finds nothing, choose Search for updated drivers on Windows Update.
Microsoft’s current general guidance does not name one guaranteed Device Manager category or one specific legacy driver package for every Xbox 360 receiver. The category and displayed device name can vary by receiver, Windows installation, and driver state.
Show a receiver that is hidden in Device Manager
A disconnected or previously installed receiver may not appear in the normal Device Manager list. To reveal it:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Select View.
- Turn on Show hidden devices.
Look for a greyed-out controller, receiver, or device with a warning icon. A warning icon indicates that Windows has identified a problem with the device or its driver; it does not prove that the controller itself is faulty. Microsoft documents the hidden-device option.

Reinstall the driver
Reinstalling is useful when the controller worked previously but stopped appearing correctly.
- Disconnect the wired controller or wireless receiver from USB.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the controller or receiver and select Uninstall device.
- Select Uninstall to confirm.
- Restart using right-click Start > Shut down or sign out > Restart.
- After Windows starts, reconnect the controller or receiver.
Disconnecting the hardware before removal is important. If it remains connected, Windows may immediately rediscover it and reinstall the driver before you have finished troubleshooting. Microsoft warns about this behavior.
Remove the driver package as well
If reinstalling the device does not help, Device Manager may offer to remove the driver package too. Open the device’s uninstall dialog, select Delete the driver software for this device, and then select OK. Administrator privileges may be required.
Use this option carefully. Removing the package can leave the device without a usable driver until Windows finds or installs another one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For an advanced cleanup, Windows includes this command:
pnputil /delete-driver <Published Name> /uninstall
Replace <Published Name> with the published driver name shown for the package. The command removes that package from the driver store and uninstalls it from devices using it. If no alternative matching package exists, the controller or receiver can stop functioning until a suitable driver is installed. Microsoft documents the command and its effect.

Roll back a driver after a Windows update
If the controller stopped working immediately after a driver or Windows update, rolling back may be more appropriate than installing another driver:
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
- Right-click the controller or receiver and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if the option is available.
The rollback option may be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver version stored. Microsoft identifies a recent Windows Update as a reason to reinstall the previous driver.
Test whether the problem is hardware or Windows
Use this order to narrow down the fault:
- Try another USB port.
- Remove any unpowered USB hub from the connection.
- For a wired controller, test another known-good USB cable if the cable is detachable, or test the controller on another compatible PC.
- For a wireless setup, test the receiver and controller separately where possible.
- Check Device Manager for a warning icon or a hidden device.
- Install pending Windows updates, then restart.
Microsoft identifies damaged cables, insufficient power, incorrect or missing drivers, and hardware failure on another PC as useful failure points to test. If the controller fails on another computer as well, software on the original PC is less likely to be the main cause.
When the controller is detected but a game does not respond
First confirm that Windows sees the hardware without relying on the game. Check Device Manager and reconnect the controller. Then inspect the game’s own input or controller settings. Some PC games expose controller selection, button mapping, or controller enable/disable options inside their settings.
If Windows detects the receiver but the controller will not connect, concentrate on the receiver/controller connection and the receiver driver. If Windows does not detect anything at all, concentrate on USB power, the port, the cable, the receiver, and Device Manager rather than changing game settings.

Can I connect an Xbox 360 wireless controller through Bluetooth?
No ordinary Bluetooth pairing instructions should be used for an Xbox 360 wireless controller. The documented setup to troubleshoot is an Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows connected through USB. Do not assume that a newer Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is interchangeable with an Xbox 360 receiver.

Why does Windows not detect my wired Xbox 360 controller?
Unplug it, wait briefly, and reconnect it directly to another USB port. Bypass an unpowered hub, check the cable, run Windows Update, and inspect Device Manager. If it still fails on another PC, the controller or cable may be defective.
Where should the Xbox 360 receiver appear in Device Manager?
Microsoft’s current general guidance does not guarantee one exact category for every Xbox 360 receiver. Open Device Manager, enable View > Show hidden devices, and inspect relevant hardware entries and any device with a warning icon.
Should I uninstall the receiver while it is still plugged in?
Disconnect it first. If the hardware remains connected, Windows may immediately rediscover it and reinstall its driver, which can undermine the removal step.
What should I do if the controller stopped working after an update?
Open Device Manager, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Microsoft identifies a recent Windows Update as a reason to reinstall the previous driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Use the controller’s USB connection for a wired Xbox 360 pad, or use a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver for a wireless pad. Start with a direct USB connection and let Windows install the driver. If detection fails, check Windows Update, update or reinstall the device in Device Manager, and test another port, cable, receiver, or PC before assuming the controller is incompatible.
