Fn Lock changes which behavior occurs when you press F1–F12 by itself: the standard function or the icon-marked action, such as volume or brightness. It usually does not disable the Fn key; holding Fn selects the alternate behavior temporarily. There is no universal Fn Lock switch in Windows, so the shortcut or setting depends on your keyboard and laptop model.
Try Fn+Esc first
- Look for an Fn-lock or padlock symbol on the Esc key.
- Press Fn+Esc once.
- Test an F-key by itself, then hold Fn and test it again.
- If the mode changed, press Fn+Esc again to reverse it.
Lenovo, Dell, and Acer document Fn+Esc for supported models, and it is common on other laptops. It is not universal: ASUS says support depends on the model, and the shortcut may do nothing on keyboards without hardware Fn Lock. Some models use an Esc-key light or indicator to show the state.
The labels can be confusing because manufacturers may describe either the standard F1–F12 commands or the icon-marked actions as the primary behavior. For example, if F5 changes brightness but you want it to refresh a page, switch the mode or hold Fn while pressing F5.

Change the setting in BIOS or UEFI
If the keyboard shortcut is unavailable, check your exact model’s manual for BIOS/UEFI instructions. Search for Function Key Behavior, Action Keys Mode, Hotkey Mode, Fn Lock Options, Special Function Mode, or Function Key Setting. Firmware settings generally establish the default behavior before Windows loads, but the menu and choices vary by model.

HP: Action Keys Mode
- Save your work, then shut down or restart the computer.
- As it starts, press F10 repeatedly to open BIOS Setup.
- Open System Configuration and select Action Keys Mode.
- Choose Enable or Disable, then press F10 to save and restart.
On HP systems with this option, enabling Action Keys Mode makes the printed actions, such as volume or mute, work without Fn. Disabling it makes standard F1–F12 commands the default. Some HP models instead support Fn+Shift; check the manual for your model.
Dell: function-key settings
On many Dell laptops, Fn+Esc toggles Fn Lock. For the BIOS route, restart and press F2 at the Dell logo to open System Setup, then look for Function Key Behavior, Fn Lock Options, or a related POST Behavior setting. Dell notes that names and locations vary across systems.
Do not assume every computer uses F10 or F2 to enter firmware. The startup key differs by manufacturer and model; use the support documentation for your computer.

Use the manufacturer’s Windows utility
Some laptops provide the setting through manufacturer software rather than, or in addition to, firmware. ASUS may offer choices through ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys or MyASUS > Device Settings, depending on the model and installed system software. Check your manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and do not install a utility intended for another laptop.
Windows itself has no universal Fn Lock control. Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager can remap many keys and shortcuts, but it is not a general replacement for hardware Fn Lock, and some keys or shortcuts cannot be remapped.
What to do when the shortcut or BIOS option is missing
- Check the key legends for an Fn-lock or padlock symbol on Esc, Shift, Caps Lock, or another key.
- Try the shortcut documented for your exact laptop model; some supported HP models use Fn+Shift.
- Test a standard F-key by itself and with Fn held to confirm which behavior is active.
- Check the model’s manual and BIOS/UEFI for a function-key setting.
- Look for the manufacturer’s official hotkey utility and recommended updates for your model.
Some keyboards have no configurable Fn Lock. If the Fn key itself is physically defective, a software setting may not fix it; consult model-specific hardware support rather than looking for a generic Windows control.

External keyboards and other common mix-ups
A USB or Bluetooth keyboard generally controls its own Fn or F Lock state through hardware or manufacturer software. Changing a laptop’s BIOS setting generally does not change an unrelated external keyboard. Check that keyboard’s manual, key legends, or configuration application.
Fn Lock is also different from Num Lock. If letter keys type numbers, investigate Num Lock or the embedded numeric keypad instead; that is a separate issue from the F1–F12 row.

Can I lock or unlock Fn from Windows Settings?
No. Windows does not provide a universal Fn Lock setting. The laptop manufacturer typically implements the behavior through a keyboard shortcut, firmware option, or OEM utility.

Does Fn+Esc work on every laptop?
No. Lenovo, Dell, and Acer document it for supported models, and other brands may use it too, but the shortcut depends on the keyboard. Check the key marking and your model’s manual.
What does Fn Lock change?

Why can’t I find Action Keys Mode in BIOS?

Will changing my laptop’s BIOS setting affect an external keyboard?
Usually not. An external keyboard generally manages Fn or F Lock through its own hardware or manufacturer software.
Can PowerToys replace Fn Lock?
No. PowerToys can remap many keys and shortcuts, but it is not a general control for the hardware Fn mode, and some keys or shortcuts cannot be remapped.
Start with the shortcut documented for your keyboard—often Fn+Esc—then check the manufacturer’s utility or BIOS/UEFI. If the model has no shortcut, utility, or firmware option, Windows cannot universally change its Fn behavior.
