Opera can fail in Windows 11 in several different ways: it may not open, crash when a particular page loads, display a blank window, refuse to update, or work normally until an extension or damaged profile file is used. The safest fix depends on which symptom you have.
Start with the low-risk steps below. Do not delete Opera’s profile folder until you have backed up anything you may need, especially bookmarks and other browser data.
How to Fix Opera Not Working in Windows 11
1. Restart Windows 11 first
A restart can clear a stuck Opera process, a locked profile file, or a Windows installer process that is preventing Opera from updating or being removed.
Select Start > Power > Restart. After Windows starts again, try Opera before opening other applications.

2. Check whether Opera itself is broken or only one website
Open another website, such as https://www.opera.com. If other sites work, Opera is probably running correctly and the problem is related to one page, its cached data, a VPN connection, or the website itself.
When only one website fails
- Open the page in a private window with
Ctrl+Shift+N. If it works there, an extension, cookie, or cached login is a likely cause. - Force-refresh the page by holding Shift while selecting the Reload button beside the address bar. On Windows, you can also press
Ctrl+F5. - Clear browsing data through Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data.
- If Opera VPN is enabled, select the VPN icon in the combined address-and-search bar and disable it temporarily.
- Update Opera using the procedure in the next section.
Clearing browsing data can sign you out of websites, so use the smallest time range that tests the problem first.
3. Update Opera manually
Opera normally downloads updates automatically, but the installation is not complete until the browser relaunches. A pending or partially applied update can cause crashes, missing features, or startup problems.
- Open Opera and select the O Menu.
- Select Update & Recovery….
- Select Check for Update.
- Wait for the download to finish, then select Update.
- When Opera prompts you, relaunch the browser.
The installed version number is shown at the top of the Update & Recovery page. If Opera cannot remain open long enough to update, use the offline-installer method later in this guide.

Opera’s first recovery option is useful when settings, extensions, cookies, or temporary browser data are causing the failure. It does not delete bookmarks, browsing history, or saved passwords.
- Select O Menu > Update & Recovery….
- Select Recover….
- Choose Keep my data and only reset Opera settings.
- Select Recover.
This operation resets the default search engine, removes pinned tabs, resets browser settings, disables all extensions, and clears temporary data such as cookies. Because extensions are disabled, test Opera before turning them back on. If Opera becomes stable, enable extensions individually to identify the one causing the problem.
5. Use Windows 11’s Repair option if it is available
Windows 11 may expose a repair control for an installed application. It repairs the application without using the full Opera recovery process, but Microsoft warns that not all desktop applications support Repair or Reset. The options may therefore be absent on your installation.
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Opera in the list.
- Select the three-dot menu beside Opera, then select Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if that button is available.
- Test Opera after Windows finishes.
If Repair does not help and Windows shows a Reset button, you can try it. Read the warning shown by Windows before confirming, because reset behavior can remove application data. Do not assume that these buttons must exist: their absence is normal for unsupported desktop installations.

6. Reset Opera completely
Use Opera’s full recovery option only after backing up data you want to retain. This option removes the browser’s personal data as well as its settings.
- Open O Menu > Update & Recovery….
- Select Recover….
- Choose Reset my data and Opera.
- Select Recover.
A full reset deletes extensions, bookmarks, history, saved passwords, cookies, and other temporary data, in addition to resetting Opera’s settings. If Opera will not open, or if you cannot safely perform this recovery from inside the browser, proceed to the profile-backup and clean-install steps instead.
7. Back up Opera’s profile before deleting it
Opera stores important browser information in its profile and data folders. The exact locations can vary, so do not rely on a hard-coded path copied from another computer.
- If Opera opens, enter
opera:about/in the address bar. You can also open About Opera. - Note the exact paths Opera displays for the profile and data folders.
- Close every Opera window before copying files. If necessary, check Task Manager and end remaining Opera processes.
- Copy the profile data to a separate folder, external drive, or other backup location.
Opera specifically identifies these files as possible backup candidates:

Be careful with Login Data. Its passwords are encrypted and readable only on the machine that created them. Copying that file to another computer is not a reliable way to recover the passwords.
8. Perform a clean Opera installation
If Opera crashes repeatedly, will not start, or remains damaged after recovery, Opera’s documented clean-install sequence is:
- Uninstall Opera.
- Delete the Opera profile data.
- Download the latest Opera version.
- Install Opera again.
First back up the profile using the steps above. To uninstall Opera in Windows 11, select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Opera, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts. Then delete the profile data at the exact location shown in About Opera or opera:about/.

Download the replacement installer from Opera’s official download page. The current Windows page provides Opera packages for 64-bit, 32-bit, and ARM systems. Choose the package that matches the affected PC. Opera GX packages are listed separately; do not install GX if you are repairing standard Opera.
Install Opera when the affected PC has a download problem
Opera’s offline-installer procedure is:
- On a working computer, open https://www.opera.com/computer.
- Select Download now or the specific system download you need.
- Move the installer to the affected Windows 11 computer using a USB drive or another permitted method.
- Open the installer and complete the installation.
Do not use archived Opera 36 or Opera 95 builds as a normal Windows 11 repair. Opera labels Opera 36 for Windows XP/Vista and Opera 95 for Windows 7/8/8.1 as archived versions. Use the current Opera for Windows download instead.
9. Do not immediately restore the entire old profile
After a clean installation, Opera allows backed-up files to be copied into the new profile. Restore data selectively rather than replacing the new profile with the old one all at once.
For example, test the clean browser first, then restore bookmarks before testing again. If the crash returns after restoring a particular file or folder, remove that item and test again. Opera notes that reintroducing corrupted data can recreate the crash; if that happens, remove browsing data instead of restoring the complete old profile unchanged.
10. Repair Windows components if Opera’s installer or updater fails
Use these steps when Windows cannot install, remove, or update Opera, or when other applications are also failing. They are Windows repair procedures, not Opera-specific commands.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
This is the current Windows 11 path. Instructions that use Settings > Update & Security refer to older Windows 10 layouts.
Clear the Windows Update cache
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Update and select Stop.
- Open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand delete everything inside it. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
Windows uses this cache for update files. Corrupted contents can prevent software updates from completing.
Repair Windows system files

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for SFC verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows and retry the Opera installation or update.
Check the system drive
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may say that the check cannot run immediately and ask to schedule it for the next restart. Accept the prompt, then restart the PC.
Reset Windows Update services from Command Prompt
This procedure requires administrator permissions. Microsoft recommends it for users who are comfortable with command-line work. Run each command separately in an elevated Command Prompt:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
Restart Windows after all commands complete.
11. Check third-party antivirus software
Microsoft identifies third-party antivirus or security software as a possible cause of Windows 11 update failures. If Opera’s installer or updater fails while other Windows repair steps have not helped, temporarily uninstall the third-party security product, update or install Opera, and then reinstall compatible security software.

If Opera’s crash dialog appears, select Send Report. The report can include technical crash details and comments you provide.
For a Windows problem from inside Opera, use O Menu > Help > Report an issue. The current Windows label is Report an issue, not “Report a problem.”
If Opera keeps crashing, Opera recommends compressing the profile folder as a .zip, .rar, or 7zip archive and attaching it to a bug report. Remove sensitive files only when necessary. Removing the file responsible for the crash can prevent Opera from reproducing the fault, so retain an untouched backup if possible.

There is no current Opera-specific command-line repair command in Opera’s crash guidance. Opera’s own repair sequence uses Update & Recovery…, Recover…, profile backup, reinstalling the browser, and crash reporting. DISM, SFC, CHKDSK, and Windows Update service commands are separate Microsoft procedures for repairing Windows.
FAQ
Why is Opera not opening in Windows 11?
A stuck Opera process, damaged profile data, a failed update, or an extension can prevent startup. Restart Windows first. If Opera still will not open, back up the profile, uninstall Opera, delete the profile data, and install the latest version again.
Will Opera’s “Keep my data and only reset Opera settings” option delete bookmarks?
No. It keeps bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. It resets browser settings, removes pinned tabs, disables extensions, resets the default search engine, and clears temporary data such as cookies.
Does resetting Opera delete saved passwords?
The full Opera recovery option, “Reset my data and Opera,” deletes saved passwords along with bookmarks, history, extensions, cookies, and other data. The less destructive recovery option keeps saved passwords.
Why do Repair and Reset not appear for Opera in Windows 11?
Microsoft states that not all desktop applications support Windows 11’s Repair or Reset controls. Their absence does not necessarily indicate a Windows problem. Use Opera’s Update & Recovery options or reinstall the browser instead.
Can I copy Opera’s Login Data file to another computer to recover passwords?
Not reliably. Opera’s saved passwords in Login Data are encrypted and readable only on the machine that created them. Keep the file as part of a backup, but do not treat copying it to another computer as a password-recovery method.
Should I install an old Opera version to fix Windows 11 problems?
No. Opera’s download page lists Opera 36 for Windows XP/Vista and Opera 95 for Windows 7/8/8.1 as archived versions. Use the current Opera for Windows package, choosing the 64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM installer that matches your PC.
The Bottom Line
For most cases, restart Windows, update Opera through O Menu > Update & Recovery…, and reset only Opera’s settings before considering a full reset. If Opera will not start, back up the profile and perform Opera’s clean-install sequence. If the installer or updater itself fails, troubleshoot Windows Update and system files rather than searching for an unsupported Opera command-line repair.
