Microsoft Edge can place open tabs in a vertical panel on the left instead of keeping them in a strip across the top. This is useful when you have many tabs open because the sidebar has more room to display page titles.
You can switch the layout from Edge’s Search tabs icon, also called the Tab actions menu. The setting works in the latest desktop versions of Edge for Windows and macOS.
Turn on vertical tabs in Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge on Windows or macOS.
- Select the Search tabs icon in the upper-left corner of the Edge window. It appears as a downward-facing arrow and may be identified as the Tab actions menu.
- Select Turn on vertical tabs.
Edge moves the tab strip from the top of the window to a panel on the left. Select any tab in that panel to switch to it.
Turn off vertical tabs and return tabs to the top
- Select the Search tabs or Tab actions icon in the upper-left corner.
- Select Turn off vertical tabs.
Your tabs return to the horizontal strip at the top of the browser window. Turning the layout off does not close the tabs that are already open.

Use the keyboard shortcut on Windows
On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+, (Ctrl+Shift+Comma) to switch between vertical and horizontal tabs. Microsoft’s current vertical-tabs documentation does not provide a separate macOS shortcut. Microsoft Edge: Stay Organized with Vertical Tabs
Make the vertical-tabs button visible
If you cannot find the command or a vertical-tabs button, the button may be hidden from Edge’s toolbar.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Under Customize toolbar, turn on Show vertical tabs button.
- Select the newly displayed vertical-tabs button to switch between layouts.
You can open the relevant settings page directly by entering this internal Edge address in the address bar:

edge://settings/appearance
Show vertical tabs button only controls whether the button is displayed. It does not itself turn vertical tabs on or off. If vertical tabs are active and you hide the button, the left-hand tab panel can remain active while the obvious control disappears. To avoid that situation, select Turn off vertical tabs first, then disable Show vertical tabs button if you no longer want the button.
What to do if the option is still missing
Check these possibilities:

| Edge is out of date | Install the latest desktop Edge update, then restart the browser. |
| You are using a phone or tablet | Vertical tabs are supported on desktop Edge for Windows and macOS, not Edge for Android or iOS. |
| The device is managed by an organization | Your administrator may have disabled the VerticalTabsAllowed policy. |
| The toolbar button is hidden | Open edge://settings/appearance and enable Show vertical tabs button. |
Managed Windows computers
An organization can control vertical tabs with the VerticalTabsAllowed policy. When the policy is disabled, vertical tabs are unavailable and the option or related controls may not appear. When enabled or not configured, users can choose whether to use vertical tabs. The policy applies per profile and does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft account. Policy changes require an Edge restart. This is an administrator setting rather than a normal user preference, so do not change it on a work or school computer unless you are responsible for its management.
Managed macOS computers
On macOS, administrators can use the VerticalTabsAllowed preference key. An enabled configuration uses <true/>. The same policy determines whether users can use the vertical-tabs feature. Microsoft Edge policy: VerticalTabsAllowed
Do not use the old Edge flag
Older instructions sometimes tell you to open edge://flags/#edge-vertical-tabs and enable a preview flag. That is not required for the current stable feature. Likewise, you do not need to search for a special View menu command. Microsoft’s current instructions use the upper-left tab menu and the commands Turn on vertical tabs and Turn off vertical tabs.

Why is the vertical-tabs button missing?
Open Settings and more > Settings > Appearance. Under Customize toolbar, enable Show vertical tabs button. You can also open edge://settings/appearance directly.
Can I use vertical tabs in Edge on Android or iPhone?
No. Microsoft supports vertical tabs in the latest desktop Edge versions for Windows and macOS, but not Edge for Android or iOS.
Why has my organization removed vertical tabs from Edge?
An administrator may have disabled the VerticalTabsAllowed policy. When that policy is disabled, users may not see the vertical-tabs option or its related controls.
The Bottom Line
To switch Edge to a left-hand tab panel, open the upper-left Search tabs/Tab actions menu and select Turn on vertical tabs. To restore the normal top tab strip, open the same menu and select Turn off vertical tabs. If the control is missing, enable Show vertical tabs button at Settings > Appearance > Customize toolbar.
