HP does not provide one universal wireless driver for every laptop or desktop. The safest option is to download the package HP lists for your product, or use Windows Update if the computer is online.
Use HP Software and Driver Downloads to find a model-specific package. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, download the driver on another computer and copy it to the HP computer with a USB drive.
Download the HP Wi-Fi driver from HP’s website
Use this method to find the driver HP lists for your model, especially after reinstalling Windows when the wireless adapter is not working.
- Open HP Software and Driver Downloads.
- Under Select your product type, choose Laptop or Desktop.
- Select Let HP detect your product, or enter the computer’s serial number, product number, or product name.
- Click Submit.
- Select the Windows version installed on the computer.
- Look under the network-related driver category for a package for the wireless or network connection.
- Click Download, open the downloaded installer, and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when the installation finishes, even if the installer does not explicitly require it.
The package name varies by model. One HP computer may use an Intel wireless package, while another may use a Realtek, MediaTek, or Qualcomm package. Confirm that HP lists the driver for your exact product and operating system.

How to find the HP model or serial number
If HP cannot detect the computer, check the label on the underside of a laptop or the rear or side of a desktop. You can also search Windows for HP System Information and open the utility if it is installed. The product name and serial number are different identifiers; use whichever one HP accepts on the download page.
Use Windows Update to install the wireless driver
Windows Update can install a compatible network driver without requiring you to identify the wireless-chip manufacturer. It requires an internet connection, so use Ethernet, USB tethering, or another available network if Wi-Fi is unavailable.
Windows 11
- Search Windows for Check for updates and open it.
- Allow available updates to download and install.
- For optional driver packages, open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Select the relevant wireless or network update and click Download & install.
- Restart the computer.
Windows 10
- Search Windows for Check for updates and open it.
- Install available updates.
- Select View all optional updates if that link appears.
- Choose the wireless or network driver and click Download and install.
- Restart Windows.
Windows Update is convenient, but HP does not guarantee that every HP driver or software update will be offered there. If no wireless driver appears, use HP’s download page or the wireless-hardware manufacturer’s official support site.
Update the Wi-Fi driver in Device Manager
Device Manager is useful when Windows can see the wireless adapter but its driver needs updating.

- Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wireless adapter. Its name may include Wi-Fi, Wireless, WLAN, Intel, Realtek, MediaTek, Qualcomm, or another manufacturer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
This method does not guarantee that Windows will find the newest HP package. If Windows says the best driver is already installed but the connection still fails, download the model-specific package from HP.

Reinstall a malfunctioning HP wireless driver
Reinstallation can help when the adapter appears in Device Manager but Wi-Fi disappeared, repeatedly disconnects, or stopped working after an update.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wireless device and select Uninstall device.
- If available, select Delete the driver software for this device only if you have a replacement driver available or Windows can retrieve one.
- Click Uninstall.
- In Device Manager, select Network adapters → Action → Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart the computer and install the downloaded HP package if Windows does not restore the driver automatically.
If the adapter is present but disconnects when the computer is idle, open its Properties, select the Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, and click OK.
Install the driver with HP Support Assistant
HP Support Assistant can scan the computer and offer available firmware and driver updates, including wireless updates for supported models.
- Search Windows for HP Support Assistant, or open it from its taskbar icon.
- On My Dashboard, locate the computer.
- Click Updates and wait while the application analyzes the system.
- Select an available driver update, download and install it, and follow the prompts.
- Restart if requested.
HP’s current Windows utility is labeled HP Support Assistant 9 and requires Windows 10 RS4 or higher. It does not support computers with ARM processors or Windows in S mode. HP says drivers on Windows in S mode must be obtained through Windows Update.
What to do when the HP computer has no internet connection
Use another internet-connected computer to open HP’s driver page. Identify the HP product, select the installed Windows version, and download the wireless package to a USB flash drive. Move the file to the HP computer, run the installer, and restart.

To check the installed Windows version, press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. This displays the Windows edition and version; it does not download or install a driver.
Do not use generic driver-download websites. HP warns that third-party driver and diagnostic sites may charge fees, collect personal information, or distribute malware. Use HP, Windows Update, or the wireless component manufacturer instead.
When HP does not list a Wi-Fi driver
A missing wireless package may mean that HP does not offer a driver for the selected Windows version on that product. If the required version is not listed on HP’s download page, HP says it does not offer software or drivers for that product and operating-system combination.
Try these alternatives:
- Run Windows Update with a temporary wired or tethered connection.
- Check Device Manager → Network adapters and update the listed adapter.
- Identify the wireless component in Device Manager and check the component manufacturer’s official support site.
- Check whether the computer was designed and tested for your Windows version. HP does not guarantee a Windows 11 driver for every older HP computer.
When the wireless adapter is missing from Device Manager
If there is no wireless device under Network adapters, installing a newer driver may not solve the problem. Select Action → Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager. If the adapter remains absent, Windows may not be detecting the hardware. Possible causes include a disabled wireless device, BIOS settings, a failed adapter, or an incomplete Windows installation.
Check the computer’s wireless hardware and BIOS settings using HP’s model-specific troubleshooting instructions. A missing adapter is a detection or hardware problem until Windows can see it again.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 driver availability
HP’s driver catalog is model-specific. For computers sold after October 2021 with compatible hardware, HP says it tested and approved specific Windows 11 software and drivers. That does not mean every older HP computer has a Windows 11 wireless package.

Why does HP show no Wi-Fi driver for my computer?
HP may not offer a driver for the selected Windows version or the product may not support that edition. Try Windows Update, Device Manager, or the official support page for the wireless adapter manufacturer.
Does Device Manager install the newest HP Wi-Fi driver?
Not necessarily. Device Manager can search for a compatible driver, but it does not guarantee that it will find the newest HP-specific package. For the most model-specific result, use HP’s download page.
Can HP Support Assistant update the Wi-Fi driver?
It can offer available firmware and driver updates through My Dashboard → Updates. It does not support ARM computers or Windows in S mode.
