Opera GX can fail in several different ways: nothing happens when you click it, a window appears and immediately closes, the browser shows a black screen, or it repeatedly crashes after an update. The fastest fix depends on the symptom.
These steps are for Opera GX on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Start with the non-destructive checks, then move to profile recovery and a clean reinstall. Do not delete Opera’s profile or all of AppData before backing up bookmarks, passwords, sessions, and other browser data.
1. End every Opera GX process
A crashed Opera GX process can remain in the background even when no browser window is visible. That process may prevent a new instance from starting.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes.
- End every process named Opera GX, Opera GX Browser,
opera.exe, orlauncher.exe. - Select a process and click End task.
- Try opening Opera GX again.
You can do the same from Command Prompt. Open Command Prompt and run:

taskkill /F /IM opera.exe /TIf the launcher remains active, run:
taskkill /F /IM launcher.exe /TThe /F switch forces the process to close, /IM selects the executable name, and /T closes child processes. If Windows says no process was found, continue to the next step.
2. Restart Windows
Restart Windows before reinstalling Opera GX or changing profile files. A restart clears locked browser files, stuck child processes, and some pending update conditions.
After Windows starts again, try Opera GX normally. If it still does not open, continue with the startup tests below.
3. Start Opera GX with extensions disabled
An incompatible or damaged extension can crash Opera GX during startup. You can test this without deleting your profile.

- Enter the following command:
"%LOCALAPPDATA%ProgramsOpera GXlauncher.exe" --disable-extensionsPress Enter. If Opera GX was installed somewhere else, locate launcher.exe or opera.exe in File Explorer and use its actual path. For example:
"C:UsersYourNameAppDataLocalProgramsOpera GXlauncher.exe" --disable-extensionsThis is a diagnostic command-line switch, not a permanent Opera GX safe mode.
If the browser opens:
- Enter
opera://extensionsin the address bar. - Turn off all extensions.
- Restart Opera GX normally.
- Re-enable extensions one at a time.
- Remove or update the extension that causes the crash.
4. Test for a graphics-acceleration crash
A damaged graphics cache, incompatible GPU driver, or Chromium graphics initialization problem can produce a black window, blank window, or immediate crash.
Close Opera GX, then open it with GPU acceleration disabled:
"%LOCALAPPDATA%ProgramsOpera GXlauncher.exe" --disable-gpuIf Opera GX opens, go to:
opera://settings/systemTurn off Use graphics acceleration when available, then relaunch the browser.

--disable-gpu is a test, not proof that the graphics driver is defective. If Opera GX still crashes with this switch, the GPU is not necessarily the cause.
5. Test both extensions and GPU acceleration
If you cannot tell whether the problem is caused by an extension or graphics initialization, test both at once:
"%LOCALAPPDATA%ProgramsOpera GXlauncher.exe" --disable-gpu --disable-extensionsIf this works, leave GPU acceleration disabled temporarily and test Opera GX. Then re-enable extensions individually. If it does not work, move on to profile recovery rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same browser files.
6. Use Opera GX’s Recovery tool
If Opera GX opens, use its built-in recovery option before manually deleting data.
- Click the O Menu button.
- Select Update & Recovery….
- Click Recover….
- Choose the recovery option that matches your situation.
Keep my data and only reset Opera settings
This option resets browser settings, restores the default search engine, removes pinned tabs, disables extensions, and clears temporary data such as cookies. It keeps bookmarks, history, and saved passwords.
Reset my data and Opera
This option removes extensions, bookmarks, history, saved passwords, cookies, and other browser data. Back up anything important before selecting it.
The “Keep my data” option does not preserve every part of your browser state. In particular, it disables extensions, removes pinned tabs, resets settings, and clears temporary data.

Before deleting or renaming Opera GX data, make a copy of the complete profile folder. If Opera GX opens on another installation, enter opera:about/ and check the listed profile and data locations. This is safer than guessing a path.
Close Opera GX first, then end any remaining Opera processes in Task Manager. Copy the entire Opera GX profile folder to another location, such as a folder on your desktop or an external drive. Keep this backup unchanged while testing fixes.

Opera profile data can include:

These files are not interchangeable. For example, copying Bookmarks does not restore open tabs, and copying Login Data does not restore browsing history.
8. Test with a fresh Opera GX profile
A fresh profile separates damaged user data from a damaged browser installation.

- Close Opera GX completely.
- End remaining Opera processes.
- Back up the existing profile.
- Rename the Opera GX profile folder, for example from
Opera GXtoOpera GX.backup. - Start Opera GX.
If Opera GX creates a new profile and opens normally, the browser executable is probably functional. The old profile may contain corrupted session data, extension data, settings, or cache files.
Restore data selectively. Start with bookmarks, then add other files only as needed. Do not immediately copy the entire old profile back, because that can restore the file causing the crash.
Corrupted session files
Damaged session files have been reported as a cause of Opera GX startup crashes. Removing them may allow the browser to start, but it can also remove open tabs, workspaces, and session state. Back up the profile first and treat this as a last-resort repair, not a guaranteed fix.
9. Clear cache files only
If the original profile crashes but a fresh profile works, cache corruption may be involved. Close Opera GX, back up the profile, and remove only cache directories such as:
GPUCache
ShaderCache
Code Cache
CacheStart Opera GX again. Do not delete the entire profile as a first cache-clearing step. Cache deletion is a targeted test; it is not an official universal fix for every Opera GX startup problem.
10. Update Opera GX
Opera GX downloads updates automatically, but an update is not completed until the browser is relaunched.
If Opera GX opens:
- Click O Menu.
- Select Update & Recovery….
- Click Check for Update.
- Install the update if one is offered.
- Relaunch Opera GX when prompted.
Check the version shown on that page instead of relying on a fixed “latest version” number from an article. If Opera GX cannot open, download the current Windows installer or offline installer from the official Opera download page.

11. Perform a clean reinstall
Use a clean reinstall when Opera GX crashes before showing a window, a fresh profile does not help, the updater fails, browser files are missing, or the problem started after an interrupted update.

- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Opera GX.
- Click the … button and choose Uninstall.
- After uninstalling, back up and then remove or rename the remaining Opera GX profile and installation folders.
- Download the current installer from Opera’s official website.
- Install Opera GX again.
A normal reinstall may replace program files while leaving a damaged profile behind. That is why reinstalling alone can reproduce the same crash. Opera’s clean-install procedure removes both the application and its profile data.
12. Try Windows Repair or Reset
Some Windows installations expose Repair and Reset controls for desktop applications; others do not.
Windows 11
Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Opera GX > … > Advanced options.
- Choose Repair first, if available.
- If Repair does not help, consider Reset.
Windows 10
Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Opera GX > Advanced options, then choose Repair or Reset if shown.

13. Repair Windows system files when other apps are failing
DISM and SFC are not Opera-specific repairs. Use them when several Windows applications crash, Windows Settings is malfunctioning, or system components appear damaged.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- Then run:
sfc /scannowRestart Windows after both commands complete. Microsoft’s recommended order is DISM first, followed by SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows system files; it does not repair Opera’s profile or browser installation.

Antivirus or endpoint-security software can block Opera’s executable, updater, sandbox process, or a changed browser file. Check the product’s quarantine and blocked-app history rather than permanently disabling protection.

If a file was blocked:
- Confirm that Opera GX came from an official Opera domain.
- Update the security product.
- Verify the file location and digital signature.
- Restore or allow it only after verification.
- Reinstall Opera GX from the official download page if the file is missing or modified.
Avoid random icacls commands that change permissions across AppData. Community reports about missing permissions are not an Opera-published general diagnosis, and broad permission changes can weaken Windows security.
15. Report the crash
If Opera GX still crashes after a fresh profile and clean installation, send a crash report.
- Use the crash dialog if Opera displays one.
- Describe what happened immediately before the crash.
- Select Send Report.
- If Opera opens intermittently, use O Menu > Help > Report an issue.
Opera may request a compressed copy of the profile folder. Remove sensitive files if necessary, but be aware that removing the file that triggers the crash may make the problem impossible to reproduce.
Choose the first test by symptom

| Reinstalling did not help | Remove or rename the old profile after backing it up. |
| Several Windows apps also fail | Run DISM followed by SFC and check Windows Update. |
FAQ
Why does Opera GX open and immediately close?
A damaged extension, corrupted profile or session data, graphics initialization failure, or incomplete update can cause this behavior. Test --disable-extensions first, then --disable-gpu, and finally create a fresh profile.
Will reinstalling Opera GX delete my bookmarks and passwords?
A standard uninstall may leave profile data behind, but a clean reinstall that removes the profile can delete bookmarks, saved passwords, history, sessions, and extension data. Back up the profile before uninstalling or resetting Opera GX.
Why is Opera GX showing a black screen?
Graphics acceleration is one possible cause. Start Opera GX with --disable-gpu. If it opens, disable Use graphics acceleration when available at opera://settings/system.
Does Windows Repair always appear for Opera GX?
No. Microsoft does not expose Repair, Reset, or Advanced options for every desktop application. If Opera GX has no Advanced options entry, use Opera’s recovery tool, profile backup, or a clean reinstall instead.
Should I delete the whole Opera GX folder in AppData?
Not before making a backup. The profile can contain bookmarks, encrypted passwords, open sessions, cookies, history, extensions, and website data. Rename the folder first when testing a fresh profile so it can be restored.

The Bottom Line
Start by ending stuck Opera GX processes and restarting Windows. Then test --disable-extensions and --disable-gpu to identify startup-specific causes. If neither works, back up the profile and test a fresh one. Only after those checks should you use recovery, Windows reset options, or a true clean reinstall.
If Opera GX still fails after a clean profile and clean installation, report the crash to Opera instead of applying broad permission changes or deleting unrelated Windows data.
