PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is free to download and play on PC. The current PC edition is distributed through Steam, not through a separate PUBG PC installer. Steam lists it as Free To Play, with optional in-game purchases available.
This guide covers the full PC and console game, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS—not PUBG MOBILE. You need a Steam account, the Steam client, a supported 64-bit Windows PC, and a broadband internet connection.
Check whether your PC can run PUBG
Steam currently lists the following requirements. The minimum specification may launch the game, but PUBG Support warns that it may not provide the smoothest gameplay experience.

The recommended specification is intended to target 144 frames per second in most situations, according to PUBG Support. For high-refresh-rate competitive play, its separate target is Windows 10, an Intel Core i9-9900K 3.6GHz or AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, 32 GB RAM, an RTX 2060 Super or RX 5700, DirectX 11, and 50 GB of storage.

These are not guarantees of a particular frame rate. Resolution, graphics settings, drivers, background applications, and the performance of your particular PC all affect the result.
How to download PUBG on PC
- Open the official Steam website.
- Select Install Steam and download the Windows installer.
- Run the installer and complete the Steam setup.
- Open Steam and select Sign in. Create a Steam account if you do not already have one.
- Use Steam’s search box to find PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, or open its official Steam store page.
- If Steam displays “Please enter your birth date to continue:”, choose the day, month, and year from the selectors and continue.
- On the PUBG store page, select Play Game or the equivalent install button.
- Choose an installation drive and folder when Steam asks where to install the game.
- Accept the prompts and let Steam download the game and its required components.
There is no standard purchase price for the current PC edition: Steam marks PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS as Free To Play. Optional in-game purchases are available, but they are not required to download the base game. PUBG switched to free-to-play after live-server maintenance on January 12, 2022.
How to install and launch PUBG
- Wait for the download to finish in Steam’s Downloads view. Keep at least the listed storage requirement free; updates can also need temporary working space.
- Open Library in Steam.
- Select PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS in the left-hand game list.
- Click Play.
- Allow the BattlEye component to install or update if Windows or Steam asks for permission.
- Accept any firewall prompt for the game and BattlEye components if you want the game to connect to protected online servers.
BattlEye is required for BattlEye-protected servers. The game may therefore fail to join protected matches if the BattlEye service cannot install, start, or update.
Fix PUBG if it will not start
1. Verify the Steam game files
Damaged or missing files are one of the safest problems to check first.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to scan and replace missing or damaged files, then try launching PUBG again.
This also helps with BattlEye’s “Bad Client Version” kick message, which indicates that the BattlEye client in the game directory is outdated. Make sure Steam has finished all pending PUBG updates before launching.
2. Fix a BattlEye update failure
If the launcher reports “Update failed …”, BattlEye needs unrestricted internet access to download its update. Check that your firewall, antivirus, endpoint-security software, or network filter is not blocking the BattlEye launcher, commonly named [Game name]_BE.exe.

Also check the game’s BattlEye directory for BEService.exe or BEService_x64.exe. BattlEye identifies both that directory and its shared service directory as components that must not be blocked:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\BattlEye
Do not permanently disable security software just to play. Instead, use its allowed-app or firewall-exception controls, and restore normal protection after testing.

3. Fix “Failed to install BattlEye Service”
These related messages point to a service installation or startup problem:
- Failed to install BattlEye Service
- BattlEye Service installation failed
- Failed to start BattlEye Service
- BattlEye Service startup failed
- Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: …
First, close PUBG and Steam. Check that security software is not blocking BattlEye and that your Windows account has permission to install services. If the problem remains, BattlEye’s documented repair is to delete its shared service directory, then launch the game again:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\BattlEye
Only delete that BattlEye directory after closing the game. BattlEye should recreate the required service files when PUBG starts. If files are missing afterward, verify the game files in Steam or reinstall PUBG.
4. Run the BattlEye launcher as administrator
If permissions are preventing the service from starting, locate the BattlEye launcher in PUBG’s installation folder and:

- Right-click the BattlEye launcher executable.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Run this program as an administrator.
- Select OK, then launch PUBG from Steam.
If BattlEye has to be removed manually and there is no Uninstall_BattlEye.bat file, open Command Prompt as administrator and run sc delete BEService.
Restart Steam and launch PUBG so the service can be installed again. Use this command only for the BattlEye service; do not delete unrelated Windows services.
5. Resolve Windows 11 “Driver Load Error (1275)”
BattlEye documents this exact error:
Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Driver Load Error (1275)
On Windows 11, its driver can be blocked by Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection. To test the documented workaround:
- Open Start and search for Core isolation.
- Open the Windows Security result.
- Set Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection to Off.
- Reboot Windows.
BattlEye also states that a Windows update is needed to remove this incompatibility completely. Re-enable the protection when a compatible Windows update and BattlEye version resolve the issue.
6. Check test-signing and kernel debugging modes
BattlEye does not support Windows test-signing mode. The message “Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Windows Test-Signing Mode not supported.” means that mode is enabled.

It also reports “Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Kernel Debugging enabled.” when kernel debugging is active. Disable the relevant development or debugging setting and reboot Windows before trying PUBG again. If you enabled either mode for development work, record your original configuration first or ask your administrator for help.
7. Understand blocked-file messages
A BattlEye log entry such as “[INFO] Blocked loading of file: …” is not automatically a ban. BattlEye says it means the game attempted to load a file that the anti-cheat checked. If the message causes no gameplay problem, it can be ignored. If PUBG crashes, refuses to launch, or disconnects, verify the Steam files and check for software that injects overlays or modifies the game.

An error like “Exception Processing Message 0xXXXXXXXX (e.g. 0xc0000135) …” is commonly associated with missing system or Visual C++ runtime files. BattlEye recommends reinstalling the game while allowing Steam’s initial setup steps to complete. Before reinstalling, try Steam’s file verification; reinstall only if the files or runtime setup remain damaged.
Where PUBG is installed
The exact library location depends on the folder selected in Steam. To open it without guessing:
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Browse.
From the resulting folder, you can inspect the game’s BattlEye directory. Avoid deleting or editing ordinary PUBG files manually; use Steam’s verification and uninstall tools whenever possible.

What should I do if PUBG is stuck on “Starting BattlEye Service…”?
