Browsers do not have a universal “enable redirects” switch. The setting most people mean is Pop-ups and redirects, which controls whether a website can open a new window, tab, or related browsing context. It does not enable every HTTP redirect, meta refresh, or JavaScript navigation.

Chrome, Edge, Safari, Opera, and Firefox block unsolicited pop-ups by default or provide a blocking control. For safety, allow pop-ups for only the website that needs them rather than disabling the blocker everywhere.

Enable pop-ups and redirects in Google Chrome

Chrome blocks pop-ups by default. You can change the global setting or allow one website after Chrome blocks a pop-up.

Allow pop-ups for all websites

  1. Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Select Privacy and security.
  4. Open Site Settings.
  5. Select Pop-ups and redirects.
  6. Choose the option that allows pop-ups and redirects.

Leaving the blocker enabled is generally preferable. To create a site-specific rule, use Add under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects. To block a site explicitly, use Add beside Not allowed to send pop-ups or use redirects. A domain-wide entry can use the format [*.]example.com.

Allow a pop-up Chrome already blocked

  1. Open the website that needs the pop-up.
  2. Click the Pop-up blocked indicator in the address bar.
  3. Click the link for the blocked pop-up.
  4. Select Always allow pop-ups and redirects from [site].
  5. Click Done.

If unwanted messages continue, check the website’s Notifications permission separately. Browser notifications are not pop-ups. Persistent unsolicited pop-ups can also indicate unwanted software or malware. On a work- or school-managed Chrome device, an administrator may prevent you from changing the setting.

Enable pop-ups and redirects in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge calls the relevant control Pop-ups and redirects. Its blocker is enabled by default.

  1. Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Select Site permissions.
  5. Choose All permissions.
  6. Open Pop-ups and redirects.
  7. Turn the Blocked (recommended) toggle off to allow pop-ups, or on to block them.

Allow one website in Edge

  1. Follow the path to Settings and more → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All permissions → Pop-ups and redirects.
  2. Under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects, select Add site.
  3. Enter the full address beginning with https://.
  4. Select Add.

Some older instructions refer to Cookies and site permissions. Microsoft’s current documented path uses Site permissions → All permissions instead.

Edge’s blocker does not hide advertisements designed to look like pop-ups inside a webpage. It also does not block a window opened directly after you select a page button or link. If unwanted pop-ups remain, Microsoft recommends testing with extensions disabled; outdated Edge, cached data, third-party cookies, or malware are also possible causes.

Enable pop-ups and redirects in Safari on a Mac

Safari offers both global and per-website controls. A site listed under Configured Websites takes priority over the global rule.

Allow pop-ups for one website

  1. Open the website in Safari.
  2. In the menu bar, select Safari → Settings. Older Apple instructions may call this Preferences.
  3. Open the Websites tab.
  4. Select Pop-up Windows in the left-hand list. If it is not visible, scroll to the bottom of the list.
  5. Find the website and choose Allow from its menu.

Safari also provides Block and Block and Notify. The latter suppresses the pop-up but shows a Show button in the Smart Search field when Safari has blocked something.

Allow pop-ups for every website

  1. Select Safari → Settings → Websites.
  2. Choose Pop-up Windows.
  3. Review Configured Websites.
  4. Remove entries that impose a conflicting site-specific rule.
  5. Set When visiting other websites to Allow.

If a website remains listed under Configured Websites, its individual rule overrides When visiting other websites. If pop-ups continue even when Safari is set to block them, unwanted software or adware may be responsible. Safari’s setting does not remove ordinary webpage advertisements or fake pop-up controls.

Enable pop-ups and redirects in Safari on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the device’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Safari.
  4. Turn Block Pop-ups off to allow them, or on to block them.

The same Safari screen includes Fraudulent Website Warning. That is a separate safety feature; changing it is not required to allow pop-ups.

Enable pop-ups and redirects in Opera

Opera’s documented setting controls pop-ups and redirects initiated by websites. It attempts to distinguish requested windows, such as login pages, from automatically launched advertising windows.

  1. Open Opera’s Settings.
  2. Select Advanced in the left sidebar.
  3. Open Privacy & security.
  4. Select Site settings.
  5. Open Pop-ups and redirects.
  6. At the top of the page, turn Allowed on or off.

For a site-specific exception, remain on the Pop-ups and redirects page and select Add. Add only the website that needs the additional permission.

Opera’s control is not documented as a switch for every type of navigation redirect. It should not be treated as a universal control for ordinary HTTP redirects, every JavaScript navigation method, or meta refreshes.

Enable pop-ups and redirects in Firefox

Current Firefox uses the setting name Block pop-ups and third-party redirects. Older guides may refer to Block pop-up windows or the obsolete Options → Content path.

Disable Firefox’s blocker globally

  1. Open the Firefox application menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Privacy & Security on the left.
  4. Scroll to Permissions.
  5. Clear Block pop-ups and third-party redirects.

Allow a specific website

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions.
  2. Select Manage exceptions beside Block pop-ups and third-party redirects.
  3. Enter or paste the website address.
  4. Select Allow.
  5. Click Save Changes.

To remove an exception, select the website, choose Remove Website, and click Save Changes. To clear every exception, select Remove All Websites and then save. Firefox links pop-up permission with third-party redirect blocking, so allowing a trusted site permits both behaviors for that site.

Firefox may allow a pop-up created after a mouse click or key press. It also cannot stop an advertisement that merely looks like a separate window, and some websites use techniques that evade standard pop-up blocking. A pop-up without Firefox’s normal address-bar controls may be caused by malware rather than Firefox itself.

What “redirects” means in these browser settings

In browser permission pages, “pop-ups and redirects” generally refers to a website opening another tab, window, or browsing context—often through an unsolicited script. It is not a master permission governing all movement from one URL to another.

For example, allowing pop-ups may let a payment page open its authentication window. It does not necessarily stop a server from returning an HTTP redirect, prevent a page from navigating with JavaScript, or disable every automatic refresh. Those behaviors may be controlled by the site, an extension, security software, or browser-specific protections.

FAQ

Should I disable the pop-up blocker for every website?

Usually no. Allow the particular trusted website that needs a new window. A global exception exposes every site you visit to unsolicited pop-ups and potentially misleading pages.

Why are notifications still appearing after I blocked pop-ups?

Website notifications use a separate permission. Open the browser’s site settings for the offending domain and remove or block its notification permission. Persistent pop-ups can also be caused by extensions, unwanted software, or malware.

Why can a website still redirect me after I enabled redirects?

The browser setting is mainly for pop-ups and new browsing contexts. It is not a universal switch for HTTP redirects, meta refreshes, or every JavaScript navigation. Check the website, extensions, and security software involved.

Why is the setting missing or unavailable?

A managed work or school browser may be controlled by an administrator. Browser version differences can also change menu names. In Edge and Firefox, many older online instructions use paths that no longer match the current documented interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest setting for Safari’s Block and Notify option?

On a Mac, Block and Notify suppresses the pop-up while giving you a Show button in Safari’s Smart Search field. It is a useful compromise when you occasionally need a blocked window but do not want to allow every pop-up automatically.

The Bottom Line

For most cases, do not enable redirects globally. Add the trusted domain to the browser’s allowed pop-up list, complete the task, and remove the exception if it was temporary. If the problem is a desktop alert, an in-page advertisement, or an ordinary URL redirect, changing the pop-up permission is addressing the wrong control.
