Windows 11 does not include a universal graphic equalizer with adjustable frequency bands. It does provide driver-dependent audio enhancements, but the controls available vary by computer, sound card, headphones, speakers, and installed driver.

For a genuine system-wide equalizer, the best overall choice is Equalizer APO with Peace. Equalizer APO provides the audio-processing engine, while Peace adds an easier graphical interface. If you want a simpler installation with presets and minimal configuration, FxSound is the better alternative. Windows’ own audio enhancements are worth checking first, but they are not a reliable replacement for a full equalizer.

Quick comparison

Option Best for Equalizer type Cost Main limitation
Equalizer APO + Peace Detailed control and custom profiles Parametric and graphic EQ Free Requires separate installation and troubleshooting
FxSound Simple setup, presets, music and gaming 9-band EQ Free Works through the Windows default playback route
Windows audio enhancements Basic driver-provided processing Varies by device and driver Built into Windows No guaranteed graphic EQ

Best overall: Equalizer APO with Peace

Equalizer APO is the strongest choice when you want precise control over Windows audio. It runs as an audio processing object in the Windows audio path and can provide a system-wide parametric or graphic equalizer. The project is open source and licensed under GPLv2.

Peace Equalizer is the graphical interface. It is not included inside Equalizer APO, so you install the two programs separately: Equalizer APO first, then Peace.

Why choose Equalizer APO and Peace?

  • It supports both graphic and parametric equalization.
  • You can create separate profiles for headphones, speakers, games, music, and films.
  • You can adjust filters more precisely than with a basic preset-based enhancer.
  • It is free and open source.
  • It can process normal Windows audio from multiple applications through the system audio path.

The current Equalizer APO project also uses a Device Selector utility rather than the older setup tool. That matters during installation: you must attach Equalizer APO to the playback device you actually use, such as your USB headset, laptop speakers, HDMI monitor, or Bluetooth headphones.

How to install Equalizer APO and Peace

  1. Download Equalizer APO from the official project website.
  2. Run the installer and use the Device Selector to select the output device that should receive the processing.
  3. Complete the installation and restart Windows if prompted.
  4. Download and install Peace Equalizer separately.
  5. Open Peace from the Start menu and select the simple or full interface when prompted.
  6. Play audio and adjust a frequency band by a small amount. If the sound does not change, check the selected device and the troubleshooting section below.

Start with small adjustments. Boosting several bands heavily can cause clipping, harshness, or distortion. If you add substantial boosts, reduce the preamp level to leave headroom.

Important compatibility limits

Equalizer APO does not process audio sent through ASIO or WASAPI Exclusive Mode. These modes bypass the Windows system mixer and therefore bypass the APO framework. A music application using exclusive output can sound unchanged even when Equalizer APO is installed correctly.

Equalizer APO’s documented native VST support is VST2; it does not natively support VST3 plug-ins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equalizer APO can also fail when it was assigned to the wrong playback endpoint or when a driver does not expose a compatible APO processing path. A profile attached to laptop speakers will not automatically affect a USB headset if Windows treats the headset as a separate audio device.

Best easy option: FxSound

FxSound is the better choice if you want an equalizer you can install and use without learning parametric filters or APO configuration. Its current download page lists version 1.1.27.0, a download of approximately 6 MB, and support for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. It is listed as free and open source, with no registration required.

FxSound provides a 9-band equalizer, bass boost, surround sound, presets, and a system-level enhancement layer. Listed presets include Music, Movie, Gaming, and Voice.

How to install FxSound

  1. Download the installer from the official FxSound website.
  2. Run the .exe file.
  3. Accept the license agreement.
  4. Choose an installation folder and select Install.
  5. Launch FxSound from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
  6. Turn on the FxSound toggle.
  7. Select a preset or adjust the 9-band equalizer manually.

FxSound registers as an audio-enhancement layer over the default playback device. Consequently, it depends on Windows routing audio to the correct default output. If Windows has switched from your speakers to a monitor, dock, Bluetooth headset, or USB audio interface, FxSound may appear to work while you are listening to another endpoint.

Can Windows 11 equalize sound without installing an app?

Sometimes, but not consistently. Windows supplies audio-processing effects through APOs, and the available effects depend on the audio driver and device. Microsoft’s documented default effects include Bass Boost, Bass Management, Loudness Equalization DSP, Room Correction, Speaker Fill, and surround effects. These are not the same as a universal, adjustable graphic equalizer.

To check the controls available for your device:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select the playback device under the output section.
  3. Look for Audio enhancements.
  4. Open the available options and check whether your driver provides an equalizer or a useful enhancement such as Loudness Equalization.

The legacy interface may expose additional driver controls. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound, select the device under Playback, choose Properties, and check the Enhancements tab.

  • INTEGRATED EQUALIZER: The compact amplifier has crisp buttons for the audio sources and selectors, rotary knob for equalization, mic and master volume adjustments. A remote control is also included in the package for distant audio adjustments

Neither path guarantees an EQ. One computer may show Bass Boost and Loudness Equalization, while another shows only a switch to enable or disable enhancements.

Windows Sonic is not an equalizer

Windows Sonic for Headphones changes spatial presentation; it does not provide adjustable frequency bands. Use it when you want virtual spatial audio for headphones, not when you want to tune bass, mids, or treble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current path is:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select the playback device under Output devices.
  3. Open Device Properties.
  4. Under Spatial sound, select Windows Sonic for Headphones.
  5. Click Apply.

Dolby Access and DTS Sound Unbound are separate Microsoft Store options. They are spatial-audio products, not substitutes for a conventional frequency-band equalizer.

How to choose the right equalizer

Choose Equalizer APO + Peace if:

  • You want the most control over frequency bands and filters.
  • You need different profiles for different devices.
  • You are comfortable checking Windows audio routing and application output modes.
  • You want a free, open-source solution without relying on a preset-based interface.

Choose FxSound if:

  • You want a quick installation and a straightforward interface.
  • You prefer presets for music, films, gaming, or voice.
  • A 9-band equalizer is sufficient.
  • You do not need to process ASIO or WASAPI Exclusive audio.

Use Windows’ built-in controls if:

  • Your audio driver already exposes the enhancement you need.
  • You only want Bass Boost or Loudness Equalization.
  • You want to avoid installing third-party software.

Fix an equalizer that does not change the sound

Do not immediately increase every slider. First verify that the equalizer is attached to the output device and that the application is using a compatible Windows audio path.

  1. Check the output device. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Output and select the speakers, headphones, headset, or monitor you are actually using.
  2. Check Equalizer APO’s selected device. Reopen its Device Selector and make sure the same endpoint is enabled. USB and Bluetooth devices commonly appear as separate endpoints.
  3. Disable exclusive output. If the application uses ASIO or WASAPI Exclusive Mode, Equalizer APO cannot process it. Switch that application to normal shared Windows output if you need APO processing.
  4. Temporarily disable Windows enhancements. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > > Audio enhancements and set it to Off if the option is available. Conflicting processing can produce distortion or make testing confusing.
  5. Try another default format. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > > Advanced > Default format and test a different available format.
  6. Restart the audio services. Search Start for services.msc and press Enter. Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart. Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  7. Update the driver. Open Start > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click the audio device, choose Update driver, and restart Windows. If the problem continues, uninstall the device and install the latest driver supplied by the computer, motherboard, headset, or sound-card manufacturer.

If there is no sound at all, also confirm that the correct device is selected and that it is not muted. You can set the default playback device through Start > Settings > System > Sound > Related settings > Sound Control Panel > Playback. Select the device and choose Set Default.

Our verdict

Equalizer APO with Peace is the best sound equalizer for Windows 11 when control and flexibility matter. It offers a real system-level EQ, custom profiles, and deeper adjustment than Windows’ driver-dependent enhancements. Its drawbacks are the separate Peace installation, device selection, and inability to process ASIO or WASAPI Exclusive audio.

FxSound is the best simpler alternative. Its 9-band EQ and presets make it suitable for users who want better bass, clearer voice, or a quick music and gaming profile without configuring a more technical audio-processing stack.

Is FxSound safe and free?

The current FxSound download page lists it as free and open source, with no registration required. Download it from the official FxSound website rather than an unverified third-party mirror.

Why does Equalizer APO not work in one application?

The application may be using ASIO or WASAPI Exclusive Mode, which bypasses the Windows system mixer and APO framework. It may also be using a different playback device from the one selected during Equalizer APO setup.

Is Windows Sonic an equalizer?

No. Windows Sonic is a spatial-audio feature for headphones. It changes the sense of space rather than providing adjustable bass, midrange, and treble bands.

Why is my equalized audio distorted?

Large frequency boosts can cause clipping. Reduce the preamp level, make smaller adjustments, and test with Windows Audio enhancements disabled. Distortion can also result from an unsuitable default format, driver problems, or stopped audio services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Equalizer APO + Peace. Best for simplicity: FxSound. Best without extra software: whatever audio enhancements your device driver exposes in Windows 11.

Install Equalizer APO and Peace if you want a real, customizable system-wide EQ. Choose FxSound if presets and a quick 9-band interface are more important than advanced control.
