Windows 11 does not show a setting named Host ID. The term can refer to several different identifiers:
- Host name or device name: the name used to identify the PC on a network.
- IPv4 host portion: the host part of an IP address, calculated using the address and subnet mask.
- System UUID: a hardware or firmware identifier supplied through SMBIOS.
Use the section that matches the information you need. A device name, IP address, MAC address, serial number, and UUID are not interchangeable.
Find the host name (device name) in Windows 11
If an application or support technician asks for your computer’s host ID and means the name of the computer, Windows calls it the Device name.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Settings.
- Open System and select About.
- Under Device specifications, find Device name.
This is the Windows host name used to identify the computer on a network. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 path is Settings > System > About; older instructions that direct you to Control Panel > System are not the primary current path.

Find the host name with Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt from the Start menu and run:
hostname
Press Enter. Windows displays the host-name portion of the computer’s full name.
You can also use the built-in %COMPUTERNAME% environment variable:
echo %COMPUTERNAME%
This normally returns the same name as hostname, usually in uppercase.
If hostname returns an unexpected value
Microsoft documents two less-common cases:
- The
hostnamecommand is available only when Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is installed as a component in the network adapter’s properties. - On a clustered system, if the
_CLUSTER_NETWORK_NAME_environment variable exists, hostnameprints that variable’s value instead of the ordinary computer host name.
For a normal standalone Windows 11 PC, the command and the Device name shown in Settings should agree.

In networking, “host ID” can mean the host portion of an IPv4 address. Windows does not report this as a separate field. You must identify the IPv4 address and subnet mask, then determine which bits belong to the host.
To display the relevant values:
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run:
ipconfig
Look under the adapter currently being used. The output includes an IPv4 Address, Subnet Mask, and usually a Default Gateway.

ipconfig /all
This is useful when the PC has Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a VPN, a virtual-machine adapter, or other network interfaces. Each adapter can have its own address and subnet mask, so first select the adapter relevant to your connection.
Example: calculating a host portion
Suppose ipconfig shows:
| Value | Example |
|---|---|
| IPv4 Address | 192.168.1.37 |
| Subnet Mask | 255.255.255.0 |
The mask means the first three octets identify the network and the final octet identifies the host. In this example, the host portion is 37. The network address is 192.168.1.0, and the complete host address is 192.168.1.37.
The result changes with the subnet mask. For example, a mask of 255.255.0.0 leaves the last two octets for the host portion. Therefore, do not extract the last octet automatically without checking the mask.
IPv4 host ID is a networking calculation, not another name for the Windows device name. The ipconfig output supplies the address and mask, but does not label any line Host ID.
Multiple adapters and confusing ipconfig results
It is normal for ipconfig to show several adapters. Common entries include:
- Wi-Fi and Ethernet hardware
- VPN connections
- Hyper-V, VMware, or VirtualBox adapters
- Bluetooth and other logical interfaces
An inactive adapter may have no useful IPv4 address, while a VPN may show an address that applies only inside the VPN. Use the address and mask belonging to the network whose host portion you are trying to identify.
Find the system UUID when “host ID” means a machine identifier
Some licensing, inventory, virtualization, and asset-management tools use a hardware-level identifier rather than the network name. In that situation, the relevant value may be the SMBIOS system UUID.

Open PowerShell and run:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_ComputerSystemProduct | Select-Object -ExpandProperty UUID
The command reads the UUID property from Win32_ComputerSystemProduct. Microsoft defines this as the product or system UUID mapped to the SMBIOS Type 1 system UUID.
If the computer firmware does not provide a UUID, Windows can return:
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
An all-zero result is not a useful unique machine identifier. It indicates that the system did not provide a UUID through this interface.
Which Windows 11 identifier should you provide?
| If the request says… | Provide… | How to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Computer name, host name, PC name, or network name | Device name | Settings > System > About, or hostname |
| IPv4 host ID or host portion | The host portion calculated from an IPv4 address and subnet mask | ipconfig or ipconfig /all |
| Machine ID, hardware ID, SMBIOS UUID, or system UUID | System UUID | PowerShell and Win32_ComputerSystemProduct.UUID |
| Network adapter hardware address | MAC address | ipconfig /all |
| Manufacturer asset identifier | Serial number or identifying number | Use the manufacturer or Windows inventory tool requested by the administrator |
When the requester uses the phrase “host ID” without defining it, ask whether they need the device name, an IPv4 host portion, or a system UUID. Sending the wrong value can cause a support ticket or software activation request to fail.
Command Prompt may open in Windows Terminal
On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, command-line windows commonly open in Windows Terminal instead of the older console host. This does not change how hostname, ipconfig, or PowerShell commands work.
If you specifically want the legacy console window, go to Start > Settings > System > Advanced. Under Terminal, select Windows Console Host. In Windows Terminal, the equivalent setting is Startup > Default terminal application > Windows Console Host.

FAQ
Does Windows 11 have a setting called Host ID?
No. Windows 11 does not display a field literally named Host ID in Settings. Depending on the context, the request may mean the Device name, an IPv4 host portion, or the system UUID.

What is the quickest way to find my Windows 11 host name?
Open Command Prompt and run hostname. You can also open Settings > System > About and read the Device name under Device specifications.
Is the host ID the same as the IP address?
No. An IP address identifies a network interface on a network. An IPv4 host portion is only the host section of that address after applying the subnet mask. The Windows device name and system UUID are different identifiers.
How do I find my IPv4 host portion?
Run ipconfig, note the IPv4 Address and Subnet Mask for the appropriate adapter, and calculate the host section from those values. Windows does not print a separate Host ID field.
How do I find the Windows 11 system UUID?
Run Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_ComputerSystemProduct | Select-Object -ExpandProperty UUID in PowerShell. If the firmware supplies no UUID, the result may be all zeroes.
Why does Command Prompt open in Windows Terminal?
Windows 11 version 22H2 changed the default application hosting command windows to Windows Terminal. The commands still run normally; only the window host has changed.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 support requests, “host ID” means the computer’s Device name: open Settings > System > About, or run hostname. If the request is about networking, run ipconfig and calculate the IPv4 host portion from the address and subnet mask. If it concerns a hardware-level machine identifier, retrieve the SMBIOS UUID with PowerShell instead.
