The older_than: operator finds old messages; it does not schedule cleanup.
To handle future mail, create a filter. To clean up messages already in your account, search for them and manually archive or delete the reviewed results.
What Gmail can—and cannot—automate

Searching for older_than:1y only displays matching messages. It does not change anything until you select messages and choose an action.
Useful Gmail searches for old messages
Enter one of these queries in Gmail’s search box:

Gmail documents d for days, m for months, and y for years. Use older_than:30d, not a format such as older_than:30days. You can combine search operators with spaces; for example, in:inbox category:promotions older_than:6m.
Use a narrow query first when messages may be important. For example, in:inbox older_than:1y is safer than deleting every message in the account older than one year.
Automatically archive matching incoming email
Use this for recurring mail that you want to keep but do not want in the Inbox, such as newsletters, receipts, or automated notifications.
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- In the top search box, click Show search options.
- Enter the matching criteria, such as a sender, subject words, recipient, or a query like from:newsletter@example.com.
- Optionally click Search to check which messages match.
- Click Create filter.
- Select Skip the Inbox (Archive it).
- Click Create filter again.
The filter removes the Inbox placement; it does not delete the message. Archived mail remains under All Mail and can be found with in:archive from:newsletter@example.com.

An archived conversation can return to the Inbox when someone replies. A reply is governed by the filter only if the reply itself matches the filter’s criteria. For example, a filter based on one sender may not catch a reply from a different address.
Automatically delete matching incoming email
Use deletion filters cautiously. They are suitable for mail you are certain you never need, such as messages from a known spammy sender or repeated automated messages.
- Open Gmail on a computer and click Show search options in the search box.
- Enter the sender or other criteria.
- Click Search to inspect the matches, if needed.
- Click Create filter.
- Choose Delete it.
- Click Create filter.
Gmail moves matching messages to Trash; it does not erase them immediately. Messages stay there for up to 30 days, during which you can recover them or permanently delete them. After 30 days, Gmail permanently deletes them and they cannot be recovered through the normal Trash workflow.
Do not create a broad rule based only on a vague subject word. Check the test results first, and exclude important mail when necessary. A filter matching a sender, subject, or mailing-list address is generally easier to audit than one relying on a wide keyword.

Clean up old mail that already exists
Gmail filters are designed to handle incoming mail, not run periodic age scans. To clean up existing messages, search for them and apply an action manually.
Archive old messages in bulk
- Search for messages, such as in:inbox older_than:1y.
- Click the checkbox above the message list.
- Gmail initially selects conversations on the current page. If a notice offers Select all [number] conversations in …, click it to select the complete result set.
- Click Archive.
Archiving removes the Inbox placement but preserves messages. To find archived mail later, open More, then All Mail, or search with in:archive.
Delete old messages in bulk
- Run a query such as category:promotions older_than:6m.
- Review the results for anything worth keeping.
- Click the top checkbox, then choose Select all [number] conversations in … if Gmail offers that option.
- Click Delete.
The selected conversations move to Trash. To permanently remove them immediately, open More, then Trash, select the messages, and click Delete forever. To empty the folder completely, click Empty Trash now.
Important edge cases before deleting
Inbox searches and archived mail are different
in:inbox older_than:1y limits cleanup to messages currently in the Inbox. It will not include mail you previously archived. To include archived messages, remove in:inbox, but inspect the larger result set carefully.

Conversation view can make results look broader
Gmail may show an entire conversation when only one message matches a search. For example, -is:starred can display a conversation because one message matches, even though another message in that conversation is starred. Open important threads before applying a bulk action.
Categories and labels affect what you see
A query such as category:promotions older_than:6m targets messages classified as Promotions. Archived messages no longer appear in Inbox categories, but remain accessible through All Mail or search.
Edit or remove a Gmail filter
- In Gmail, click Settings in the top-right corner.
- Click See all settings.
- Open Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Find the filter and click Edit or Delete.
- If editing, change the criteria, click Continue, then choose Update filter or OK.
Gmail also supports filter backups. On the same page, select a filter and click Export to save it as an .xml file. To restore filters, click Import filters, choose the file, click Open file, and then click Create filters.

- Use a search such as category:promotions older_than:6m to identify low-value old mail.
- Archive it first if you may need it later.
- Create filters to archive future newsletters and notifications as they arrive.
- Use deletion filters only for senders or message types you have verified as disposable.
- Leave deleted mail in Trash for a while before using Delete forever.
FAQ
Can Gmail automatically delete emails older than 30 days?
Not with a native scheduled Gmail filter. Gmail supports searches such as older_than:30d and filters with a Delete it action, but it does not provide a periodic rule that scans the mailbox and deletes messages when they reach 30 days old. Search for old mail and delete it in bulk instead.
Does older_than:1y automatically create a filter?
No. It only returns messages older than one year. To create a filter, use Gmail’s Show search options, specify the criteria, click Create filter, choose an action, and click Create filter again.
What is the difference between archiving and deleting in Gmail?
Archiving removes a message from the Inbox but keeps it in Gmail, including under All Mail. Deleting moves it to Trash. Trash is automatically cleared after up to 30 days unless you recover the message or permanently delete it sooner.
Where do archived Gmail messages go?
They remain in Gmail under All Mail. You can also search with in:archive. If someone replies to an archived conversation, it can return to the Inbox.

Can I create or manage filters in the Gmail mobile app?
Google’s filter creation and management instructions use Gmail’s web interface on a computer. Open Gmail on a computer to create, edit, delete, import, or export filters.
The Bottom Line
Gmail filters can automatically archive or delete matching incoming mail, but they are not scheduled age-based cleanup jobs. Use older_than:30d, older_than:6m, or older_than:1y to find existing old messages, then bulk archive or delete the reviewed results. Archive when you want to keep the mail; choose deletion only when sending it to Trash is acceptable.
