Windows Update error 0x80248014 is associated with a Windows Update database problem or a Windows Update service that is not running. It does not, by itself, prove that your Windows installation is corrupted. Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter, then check the service and reset the update components if needed.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to start with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It runs diagnostics and attempts to fix common update problems.
- Open Start and search for Get Help.
- Open the app and search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart the PC if Get Help recommends it.
- Try the update again from Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
You can also launch the troubleshooter through Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Microsoft documents both the Get Help workflow and this Settings path in its Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
2. Check that the Windows Update service is running
Error 0x80248014 can occur when the Windows Update service is stopped. Check it before resetting anything.

- Press Win + R.
- Type services.msc and press Enter.
- Find Windows Update in the list.
- Right-click it and select Start.
- Close the Services window and check for updates again.
If Windows refuses to start the service, note the message and continue with a cache reset.
3. Reset the Windows Update cache through Services
A damaged or incomplete update download can leave the local update cache in a state that Windows cannot use. Microsoft documents clearing the contents of SoftwareDistribution through Services:
- Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Update and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
- Delete all files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the folder itself.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Windows Update and select Start.
- Restart the computer, then open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows recreates the required cache data. Previously downloaded update files may need to be downloaded again, so the next update check can take longer.
4. Reset the update components from an elevated Command Prompt
If the Services method did not fix the problem, use Microsoft’s command-line reset procedure. You need administrator permissions.

- Open taskbar Search and type Command Prompt.

- Run each command separately. Press Enter after each one and wait for it to finish before entering the next.
Commands: net stop bits; net stop wuauserv; ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak; ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak; net start bits; net start wuauserv.
These commands stop Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Update, then rename the two update data folders. Renaming keeps the old folders as backups while Windows creates fresh ones. This is Microsoft’s current command-line reset procedure; it is distinct from the Services method above, which clears the contents of SoftwareDistribution. Microsoft’s current Windows Update guide does not include commands to stop cryptsvc or msiserver, delete qmgr*.dat, or directly delete the contents of catroot2.
When all six commands have completed, close Command Prompt and restart the computer. Then go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
5. Repair Windows system files
If Windows Update still fails, repair the component store and protected system files. This is a general advanced repair step; it is not proof that system corruption caused 0x80248014.

- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Run this command first: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth.
- Wait for DISM to finish, then run sfc /scannow.
- Wait until SFC verification reaches 100%.
- Restart the PC and try Windows Update again.
Do not close the Command Prompt window just because the progress appears to pause. DISM and SFC can take time. Microsoft documents this command order in its Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
Microsoft recorded that a Windows 11 version 24H2 issue could make DISM’s /RestoreHealth operation fail with error 0x800f0915. Microsoft marked that issue fixed in the June 9, 2026 update documentation. If you encounter that separate error, consult Microsoft’s servicing documentation rather than treating it as the same problem as 0x80248014.
6. Temporarily remove third-party security software
Microsoft says third-party antivirus and other security software can interfere with Windows updates. If you use one, temporarily uninstall it, restart the computer, and try Windows Update. Use the security vendor’s removal instructions if it supplies a cleanup tool. After updating, reinstall software compatible with your Windows 11 release. Do not leave the PC unprotected longer than necessary; Windows Security can provide built-in protection while the third-party product is removed.
7. Check whether your Windows 11 version is still supported
Press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter to see your Windows version and build. Microsoft lists these relevant support deadlines:

| Windows 11 version and edition | End of updates |
|---|---|
| 24H2 Home and Pro | October 13, 2026 |
| 24H2 Enterprise and Education | October 12, 2027 |
| 23H2 Enterprise and Education | November 10, 2026 |
These dates come from Microsoft’s Windows 11 servicing documentation and 23H2 update documentation. If your edition has reached the end of support, move to a supported release rather than repeatedly repairing the old update installation.
8. Try Windows Update again
After each repair, use Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. If Windows displays Update and restart or Update and shut down, choose one so Windows can apply the pending update. Keep the PC connected to power and avoid interrupting the process.

Contact Microsoft Support or your organization’s administrator if the error remains after the troubleshooter, service check, cache reset, and repair commands. Business-managed PCs may have update policies, proxy settings, endpoint security, or WSUS configuration that you should not change manually.
Also seek help if commands return access-denied errors, the Windows Update service repeatedly stops, or other system services fail to start. Those symptoms may indicate a broader permissions, servicing, or management problem rather than a simple stale update cache.
