In SharePoint in Microsoft 365, “drop-down sections” are called collapsible sections. To create one on a modern page, edit the page, select the section, open its properties, and turn on Make this section collapsible. Then choose a title and whether the section starts expanded or collapsed.
This feature hides or reveals content within a page; it is different from a drop-down site-navigation menu. You do not need a custom web part or JavaScript to create a collapsible section.
How to create a collapsible section in SharePoint
These steps apply to a modern SharePoint page in SharePoint in Microsoft 365.
- Open the SharePoint page where you want the expandable content.
- Select Edit at the top right of the page.
- Select the section you want to make collapsible. To add a new section, use the circled-plus control, select + Section, and choose the number of columns.
- Select Edit Properties in the section toolbar, or select Properties on the right side of the page.
- In Section properties, turn on Make this section collapsible.
- Configure the title, divider, icon alignment, and default display as needed.
- Add content, such as Text, Quick Links, Documents, or other web parts, inside the section.
- Select Publish for a new page or Republish for an existing published page.
You can make an existing section collapsible; creating a new section is not required. Each section is configured separately, so repeat the process for each section that should behave as a drop-down.

Configure the section’s title and default state
After you turn on Make this section collapsible, configure how the section looks and behaves.
| Setting | What it controls |

| Show section title | Turns the section heading on or off. |
| Section title | The text shown at the top of the section, such as “Frequently asked questions” or “Project documents.” |
| Heading level | Sets the heading level used for the section title. |
| Show divider line between sections | Turns the line separating this section from adjacent sections on or off. |
| Icon alignment | Places the expand/collapse icon on the Left or Right. |
| Default display | Sets the initial state to Expanded or Collapsed. |
Enter a descriptive title and set Default display to Collapsed if the page should initially show only the heading. Choose Expanded if visitors should see the section’s contents immediately. The title is optional, but without one users may not know what the hidden content contains.
Add web parts to the collapsible area
Add web parts to the section’s columns in the normal way. For example, a “Project resources” section could contain a Quick Links web part, while an “Additional details” section could contain text or documents.
The setting applies to the whole section, including all its columns and web parts. If you need independently expandable groups, put each group in its own section and configure each section separately.

Use different default states on one page
Because collapsibility is configured per section, you can have one section expanded and another collapsed. If a published section opens with its content visible, check that its Default display is set to Collapsed.
What to do when the setting is missing
If Make this section collapsible does not appear, check these possibilities:
- You are not editing a modern page. Select Edit and make sure the page is a modern SharePoint page.
- You selected a web part, not its section. Select the surrounding section border or area, then open its properties.
- You are looking in the wrong properties panel. Select the section first, then use Edit Properties in the section toolbar or Properties on the right side.
- The site is running SharePoint Server 2019 or SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. Microsoft’s documentation says collapsible sections are not available in these editions.
- Your organization has not received the feature yet. Microsoft releases some functionality gradually, including through Targeted Release, so the option may not appear in every tenant at the same time or may look slightly different.
Check the page type, SharePoint edition, and selected page element first. Microsoft may also change the location or wording of controls during a staged rollout.
Common mistakes
Looking for a “Drop Down” web part
Use a page section and enable Make this section collapsible. This is not the same as a drop-down site-navigation menu, which is configured separately. Modern SharePoint navigation uses cascading or mega menu styles.

Following old Script Editor instructions
Instructions that rely on adding a Script Editor web part are outdated for modern SharePoint pages. Microsoft says the Script Editor and Content Editor web parts are not available on modern pages. For custom behavior, use a supported custom web part or SharePoint Framework solution.
Expecting the section to start collapsed
Enable the feature and then set Default display to Collapsed. These are separate choices.
Expecting a title or divider automatically
The section title and divider line have their own controls. Turn on the title option and enter a heading; turn on Show divider line between sections if you want a divider.
When collapsible sections are useful
Collapsible sections work well when a page contains content that is helpful but should not dominate the initial view:

- Project resources and reference links
- Department information grouped by audience
- Long instructions with optional troubleshooting steps
Use short, descriptive headings rather than generic labels such as “Details” or “More.” A visitor should be able to decide whether to open a section from its title alone.

Can I create a SharePoint drop-down section with HTML or JavaScript?
You do not need either for a collapsible section on a modern SharePoint page in Microsoft 365. Select the section, open its properties, and turn on Make this section collapsible.
Can an existing SharePoint section be made collapsible?
Yes. Edit the page, select the existing section, choose Edit Properties or Properties, and enable Make this section collapsible.
How do I make the section load closed?
In the section properties, set Default display to Collapsed. Enabling collapsibility by itself does not set the initial state to closed.

Can each section have a different default state?
Yes. The setting is applied per section, so one section can default to expanded while another defaults to collapsed.
Why can’t I find Make this section collapsible?
Confirm that you are editing a modern SharePoint page in Microsoft 365 and have selected the section rather than a web part. The feature is unavailable in SharePoint Server 2019 and SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, and Microsoft may still be rolling it out to some organizations.
Is a collapsible page section the same as a drop-down navigation menu?
No. A collapsible section hides or reveals content within a page. Site navigation is configured separately and can use cascading or mega menu styles.
Does a collapsible section need a title?
No. A title is optional, but a descriptive section title helps users identify the hidden content.
