Microsoft Edge blocks pop-ups by default. You can change that setting in Settings and more (…) → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All permissions → Pop-ups and redirects.
Keep the blocker enabled unless a trusted website genuinely needs a new window or tab. For banking, payroll, government, and business sites, adding one exception is safer than allowing pop-ups everywhere.
Enable the pop-up blocker in Microsoft Edge
On Windows or macOS, use these steps:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- In the left panel, select Privacy, search, and services.
- Select Site permissions.
- Select All permissions.
- Select Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn on Blocked (recommended).
New Edge installations normally have this setting enabled already. If the switch is on but a site still displays unwanted content, the content may not be a browser pop-up. See the troubleshooting section below.
Disable the pop-up blocker
To allow pop-ups by default, open the same settings page:

Settings and more (…) → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All permissions → Pop-ups and redirects
Then turn Blocked (recommended) off.
This allows websites to open pop-up windows, tabs, or redirects by default. It is less restrictive than allowing one trusted website, so turn the blocker back on when you have finished using a site that requires it.
Open the pop-up settings directly
Instead of navigating through the menus, enter this address in Edge’s address bar:
edge://settings/privacy/sitePermissions/allPermissions/popups
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePress Enter to open the Pop-ups and redirects page directly.
Allow pop-ups for one website
You do not have to disable the global blocker for a single website. Edge has an allow list for sites that need pop-ups, such as online banking portals, payment pages, payroll systems, or government applications.

What Edge’s pop-up blocker blocks
Edge’s built-in blocker is intended to stop websites from automatically opening:
Recommended Free Tools
- A new browser window
- A new tab
- A partial window over the current page
It does not block every type of content that users commonly call a “pop-up.”
| What you see | Is the pop-up blocker responsible? |
|---|---|
| An automatically opened tab or window | Usually yes |
| An advertisement embedded in the page | No; use an appropriate content- or ad-blocking extension |
| A window opened after you select a button or link | Usually no; Edge permits intentional actions |
| A notification in the Windows notification area | No; website notifications use a separate permission |
| A warning or box drawn inside the current webpage | Not necessarily; it may be page content designed to look like a pop-up |
Stop website notifications separately
Website notifications are different from pop-ups. They can appear in Windows’ notification area and may continue appearing after Edge is closed. Enabling the pop-up blocker does not remove notification permission.
To block notifications from a particular site:
- Select Settings and more (…) → Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Go to Site permissions → All sites.
- Select the affected website.
- Find Notifications and set it to Block.
You can also block notifications while visiting the site. Select View site information to the left of the address bar. Under Permissions for this site, find Notifications and choose Block.
Pop-ups continue after blocking is enabled
Use the symptom to identify which setting or component is responsible.

The content is an advertisement inside the page
Edge’s pop-up blocker does not remove advertisements embedded directly in a webpage. A reputable ad-blocking or content-blocking extension may be needed, subject to your organization’s rules and the website’s terms.
The messages appear in the notification area
Review the site’s notification permission under Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All sites. Select the site, open Notifications, and choose Block.
An extension is opening the content
Go to Settings and more (…) → Extensions → Manage extensions. Turn extensions off temporarily. If the behavior stops, turn them on one at a time to identify the extension causing it.
Edge needs an update
Open Settings and more (…) → Settings → About Microsoft Edge. Edge checks for updates on that page and can apply an available update.

A site’s cached data or cookies are causing problems
For a legitimate site that behaves incorrectly, Microsoft also recommends trying measures such as blocking third-party cookies or clearing cached browsing data. These steps address site behavior; they do not replace the pop-up setting.

Enable or disable pop-ups in Edge for Android
In the current Edge Android app:
- Open Edge and select ….
- Select Settings.
- Select Site permissions.
- Select Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn the setting off to block pop-ups, or on to allow them.
Mobile menu labels can change between app versions, so install the latest Edge update if the option is missing.
What about Edge on iPhone and iPad?
Microsoft’s current iOS app guidance documents ad blocking under Settings → Content blockers, but does not provide the same user-facing Pop-ups and redirects path documented for Android. Microsoft’s policy documentation lists pop-up policies as supported on iOS and iPadOS, but do not assume the Android steps apply to iPhone or iPad; check the settings available in the installed version of Edge.

An administrator can control Edge’s global pop-up behavior and individual site exceptions. If the switch is unavailable, keeps reverting, or shows that it is managed, contact your IT administrator rather than changing policy settings yourself.

Site-specific policy entries use numbered values under these registry paths:
SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\PopupsAllowedForUrlsSOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\PopupsBlockedForUrls
For example, an allowed URL can be stored as a numbered value such as …\PopupsAllowedForUrls\1, with a value like https://www.contoso.com or [*.]contoso.edu. These administrative settings are separate from the normal Edge user interface and may override what an individual user selects.
FAQ
Is the Edge pop-up blocker enabled by default?
Yes. Current desktop installations of Microsoft Edge normally have Blocked (recommended) enabled under Pop-ups and redirects.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does a website still show a pop-up when blocking is enabled?
It may be an embedded advertisement, a notification, content drawn inside the webpage, an extension, or unwanted software. Edge also allows a window opened after you intentionally select a link or button.
Can I allow pop-ups for only one website?
Yes. Open Pop-ups and redirects, select Add site under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects, and enter the full URL beginning with https://.
Does blocking pop-ups stop Edge website notifications?
No. Notifications use a separate permission. Block them under Site permissions → All sites → [website] → Notifications.
What is the current Edge desktop path for pop-up settings?
Use Settings and more (…) → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All permissions → Pop-ups and redirects.

For normal browsing, leave Blocked (recommended) enabled. If a trusted service needs a pop-up, add that site under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects instead of disabling protection globally. Notifications, embedded ads, extensions, and malware require separate troubleshooting.
