You can install an APK on an Amazon Fire tablet from a computer using Amazon’s supported ADB method. Enable USB debugging, connect the tablet, confirm it appears in ADB, then run the install command with the APK’s computer path. You do not need to copy the APK to the tablet first.
What you need
- An Amazon Fire tablet with a charged battery.
- The APK file saved on your Windows PC or Mac.
- A USB cable that supports data transfer, not charging only.
- Android SDK Platform-Tools, which includes ADB.
- The Kindle Fire USB driver if you are using Windows.
ADB is included with Android Studio. If you do not use Android Studio, install Android SDK Platform-Tools separately.
1. Enable Developer Options and USB debugging
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device Options.
- Tap About Fire Tablet.
- Tap Serial Number seven times. A message should confirm that developer features are enabled.
- Return to Device Options.
- Tap Developer Options.
- Turn Developer options on.
- Turn USB debugging on.
On some 2013 Fire models, the relevant menu may be labelled Security rather than Developer options. First-generation Kindle Fire devices have ADB enabled by default.
2. Set the tablet’s USB connection mode
Connect the Fire tablet to the computer with the USB cable. On the tablet:

- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Inspect the USB notification.
- If necessary, tap Tap for other USB options.
- Select Media device (MTP). On Fire OS 7, select File Transfer instead.
You can also change this setting through Settings > Device Options > Developer Options > USB computer connection. Do not select Camera (PTP); Amazon says Android Studio will not recognize the tablet in that mode.
3. Accept the USB debugging prompt
The first time the computer connects, the tablet may display Allow USB debugging? Tap OK. If you do not approve this prompt, the tablet may appear as an Unknown device in Android Studio, and ADB may not be able to use it.
4. Install or open Android Platform-Tools
ADB is the command-line tool used to communicate with the tablet. If the adb command is not recognized, open a terminal or Command Prompt in the platform-tools folder. Amazon’s example locations are /Users/<username>/Library/Android/sdk/platform-tools on macOS and C:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Android\Sdk\platform-tools on Windows.
On macOS, commands run from that folder normally need the ./ prefix. On Windows, use adb directly.
5. Check that ADB sees the Fire tablet
From the platform-tools folder, run adb devices. On macOS, run ./adb devices.

A working connection looks similar to this:
List of devices attached
G000N8978167088A device
The serial number will be different on your tablet. The important part is the word device at the end of the line.
6. Install the APK with ADB
Run adb install <APK_path>, replacing <APK_path> with the path to the APK on your computer. For example, on Windows use adb install “C:\Users\Alex\Downloads\example.apk”; on macOS use ./adb install “/Users/alex/Downloads/example.apk”. Quotation marks are useful when a file or folder name contains spaces.
A successful installation ends with Success. Amazon’s example output also includes pkg: /data/local/tmp/MyAPK.apk before that message. When the command completes, open the Fire tablet’s app list and launch the newly installed app.
Windows: install the Fire tablet USB driver
Windows may need Amazon’s Kindle Fire USB driver before ADB can connect. Download the driver from Amazon, extract the downloaded package, run Fire_Devices ABD drivers, and complete the installation wizard.
To check the result:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Fire Devices.
- Look for Android Composite ADB Interface.
If the tablet was connected before USB debugging was enabled, Windows may have installed a non-ADB driver. Amazon recommends removing that device driver through Device Manager > Portable Devices > [Fire device] > Properties > Driver > Uninstall, then reinstalling the Kindle Fire USB driver.

Fix an empty or missing ADB device list
If adb devices shows only the heading and no serial number, check these items in order:
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Bad or charge-only cable | Try a different USB cable and a different USB port. |
| Wrong USB mode | Choose Media device (MTP), or File Transfer on Fire OS 7. Do not use Camera (PTP). |
| USB debugging disabled | Return to Settings > Device Options > Developer Options and enable it. |
| Prompt not accepted | Unlock the tablet, reconnect it, and tap OK on Allow USB debugging? |
| Windows driver missing | Install the Kindle Fire USB driver and check for Android Composite ADB Interface in Device Manager. |
| Stale ADB connection | Restart the ADB server, then check the device again. |
| Computer or tablet issue | Restart both devices and reconnect the tablet. |
If ADB is already in your system PATH, restart it with adb kill-server, then adb start-server, then adb devices. On macOS, when running these commands from the local platform-tools folder, use ./adb before each command.

Optional: copy an APK or another file to the tablet
You normally do not need this for installation. The basic procedure installs the APK directly from the computer with adb install. If you specifically need to copy a file first, use adb push <file_path> <destination_folder>.
Uninstall an APK-installed app
From the Fire tablet
- Tap and hold the app icon.
- Tap Remove from Device.
- Tap OK.
With ADB
First list installed package names with adb shell pm list packages. Then run adb uninstall <package_name>. A successful removal returns Success.

About “Apps from Unknown Sources”
Many Fire-tablet guides mention a consumer setting called Apps from Unknown Sources or Allow from this source. That menu is not part of Amazon’s current documented Fire-tablet ADB installation procedure and should not be treated as a universal path for every Fire OS version and model.
Amazon’s documented tablet method is to enable Developer Options and USB debugging, connect the tablet, verify it with ADB, and run adb install. Do not substitute Fire TV instructions: Fire TV has separate menus and documentation, including an Apps from Unknown Sources setting that does not describe the tablet procedure.

| Message or symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| adb is not recognized | ADB is not installed or the terminal is not in the platform-tools directory. Install Platform-Tools or change to that folder. |
| No device listed by adb devices | USB debugging, USB mode, cable, driver, or debugging authorization is the problem. |
| Tablet appears as unauthorized | Unlock the tablet and approve Allow USB debugging?. |
| Installation does not end with Success | Check the APK path and file name, then read the full ADB error. The file may not be a valid APK or may not be compatible with the tablet. |
FAQ
Do I need to copy the APK to the Fire tablet first?
No. Amazon’s basic procedure installs the APK directly from the computer with adb install <APK_path>. Copying it with adb push is optional.
Why does my Fire tablet not appear in adb devices?
Check the USB cable, enable USB debugging, approve the USB debugging prompt, select Media device (MTP) or File Transfer on Fire OS 7, and install the Windows Kindle Fire USB driver if applicable.
Which USB mode should I select?
Use Media device (MTP) on later Fire OS versions. On Fire OS 7, use File Transfer. Do not use Camera (PTP).

Can I install an APK without Android Studio?
Yes. Install Android SDK Platform-Tools separately and use its ADB executable. Android Studio is not required.
How do I know whether the APK installed?
ADB returns Success when the installation completes successfully. You can then find and launch the app from the Fire tablet’s user interface.
Where do I enable unknown sources on a Fire tablet?
Amazon’s current documented ADB method does not require a universal Apps from Unknown Sources path. It uses Developer Options, USB debugging, and ADB instead. Menu names can vary by Fire OS version and model.
The Bottom Line
The reliable Amazon-documented route is to enable Developer options and USB debugging, select the correct USB transfer mode, confirm the tablet appears as device with adb devices, and run adb install <APK_path>. When ADB reports Success, launch the app from the tablet. See Amazon’s Fire tablet testing instructions and ADB connection guide.
