Fortnite crashes and freezes can have several causes, so start by noting the exact error and when it occurs; there is no single guaranteed fix. Check that your PC meets Fortnite’s current requirements, verify the game files, and then follow the steps that match your symptoms, such as a crash after an update, a video-memory error, or overheating after extended play.

Start with the error, timing, and system requirements

  1. Write down the exact error message, if one appears. Search Epic Games Support for that message before trying general fixes.
  2. Note when the problem occurs: at launch, after a game or Windows update, after extended play, with a controller attached, or only with a particular graphics mode.
  3. Check your PC against Fortnite’s current minimum and recommended requirements on Epic’s support site. A system below minimum requirements may need an upgrade or a different device; check compatibility before buying hardware.

Epic Games Support notes that PCs have many interlocking hardware and software components, so troubleshooting may take successive steps. Use the error and timing to narrow down which steps to try.

1. Verify Fortnite’s files

Epic recommends verifying the installation to check for damaged or changed files. Verification repairs game files and does not affect saved data, though it can take a while.

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
  2. Find Fortnite and open its management options using the three-dot menu.
  3. Select Verify and wait for the check and any repairs to finish.

2. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache and try administrator mode

If verifying does not help, clear the launcher cache using Epic’s current support instructions, then restart the launcher and test Fortnite again. You can also close the launcher, right-click Epic Games Launcher, and select Run as administrator. These are general troubleshooting tests, not guaranteed fixes.

3. Update the graphics driver and check the GPU in use

Install a suitable graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer. For a laptop, check the laptop maker’s driver guidance as well. If your PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure Fortnite is using the high-performance GPU. On Windows, check Settings > System > Display > Graphics and select Fortnite’s graphics preference if available.

4. If Fortnite crashes after an update

The timing may point to a driver or configuration issue. Check whether a newer graphics driver is available or whether the crash began immediately after a driver change. Epic’s post-update guidance also recommends deleting the GameUserSettings configuration file so Fortnite can recreate it on launch.

The file is in FortniteGame/Saved/Config/WindowsClient inside the Fortnite data location. Close the game first, and follow Epic’s current instructions to locate and remove the file. This resets that configuration; avoid deleting other files or folders.

5. If you see a video-memory error or graphics-related freeze

For an error that mentions video memory, Epic recommends verifying Fortnite’s files, updating the graphics driver, and trying Performance Mode. The error message may also advise lowering resolution or closing other applications.

If crashes, freezes, or black screens coincide with DirectX 12, Epic says switching to Performance Mode may help. In Fortnite’s video settings, test the alternative rendering mode and restart the game. Lower quality settings as a test; if stability improves, raise them gradually to find a setting your system can handle.

6. If the crash follows extended play

Problems that appear after extended play may be related to overheating. Check that the PC’s vents are unobstructed, clear dust from fans and airflow areas according to the computer manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, and use the PC in a well-ventilated space. Dust cleaning is relevant when you find blocked airflow or dust; it is not a general fix for every crash.

7. If Fortnite hangs with a controller connected

Epic identifies a controller as a possible trigger for a specific application-hung error. If that matches your situation, disconnect the controller, restart the computer, and try launching Fortnite again. If the error continues, update Windows and the graphics driver and verify the game files. Do not treat this controller-specific test as a fix for unrelated crashes.

8. Reinstall only after earlier steps fail

If general troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, Epic’s sequence includes checking background applications and drive health, then considering reinstalling the launcher or game. Reinstallation is a later step, not the first one. If the problem persists, use Epic Games Support and provide the exact error and details about when it occurs.

Can I fix a Fortnite crash that started after an update?

Check for a suitable graphics-driver update and follow Epic’s guidance to remove the GameUserSettings file from FortniteGame/Saved/Config/WindowsClient so the game can recreate it. Removing it resets that configuration.

What should I do about a Fortnite video-memory error?

Verify the game files, update the graphics driver, and test Performance Mode. Also follow any advice in the error message, such as lowering the resolution or closing other applications.

Can overheating make Fortnite crash?

It can be a possibility when problems begin after extended play. Check vents and fans for blocked airflow or dust and follow the computer manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. The symptom alone does not establish overheating as the cause.

The bottom line

Start with Fortnite’s exact error, the timing of the crash, current system requirements, and a file verification. Update the graphics driver and apply the matching branch for post-update crashes, video-memory errors, extended-play heat symptoms, or a controller-related hang. Reinstall only after the earlier steps fail, and check current instructions and requirements from Epic Games Support because they can change.
