To add IDM to Chrome, install or update the Internet Download Manager desktop application first, then install or enable IDM’s official Chrome extension. The extension is called IDM Integration Module; installing an unrelated extension that merely claims to launch IDM will not provide the official integration.
Use the direct Chrome Web Store listing rather than searching the store. IDM says its official extension is hidden from Chrome Web Store search, and search results may include fake extensions.
Before adding IDM to Chrome
Make sure the Windows desktop version of Internet Download Manager is installed. The Chrome extension communicates with that application, so installing the extension by itself is not a complete setup.
- Open Internet Download Manager.
- Select Help → Check for updates….
- Install any available update and close IDM if the installer asks you to do so.
- Restart Chrome after the update finishes.
The current IDM update history lists IDM 6.43 Build 7, released on July 22, 2026. It fixes cases where the IDM download panel did not appear on some websites. IDM 6.42 Build 42, released on July 26, 2025, added Chrome Manifest V3 support to the extension. If you use an older IDM release or an old extension copy, Chrome integration may fail.

Install the official IDM Chrome extension
The official extension has this name and ID:

- Open the official IDM Integration Module listing.
- Click Add to Chrome.
- Review Chrome’s permissions prompt and confirm the installation.
- Restart Chrome.
If the button says Remove from Chrome, the extension is already installed in that Chrome profile. Do not install another extension with a similar name.
Normally, IDM installs the integration module automatically while IDM itself is installed or updated. Chrome may still need to be restarted, and Chrome may display a prompt asking you to accept the extension installation.
Enable and configure the extension
- In Chrome, open the three-dot menu.
- Select More tools → Extensions. You can also enter chrome://extensions/ in the address bar.
- Find IDM Integration Module.
- Click Details.
- Confirm that the extension is enabled.
- Set site access to allow the extension to read data on all sites, or use the equivalent “On all sites” setting shown by your Chrome version.
- Restart Chrome.
Allowing access on all sites is important. If the extension cannot access a page, IDM may not intercept its downloads or display the video-download panel.
Enable IDM in Incognito mode
The extension is not allowed in Incognito windows unless you enable it manually:
- Open chrome://extensions/.
- Open Details for IDM Integration Module.
- Turn on Allow in incognito.
Only enable this option if you want IDM to work in Incognito browsing.

The extension and the desktop application must both be enabled.

- Open Internet Download Manager.
- Select Options.
- Open the General tab.
- Make sure browser integration, including Chrome, is enabled.
- Click OK, then restart Chrome.
Restart Chrome whenever you enable or disable IDM integration, update the extension, or change IDM’s browser-integration setting.
Test whether IDM is working
Open a page containing a downloadable file and click a download link. IDM should normally intercept file types listed in IDM → Options → File Types.
- Hold Ctrl while clicking a download link to force IDM to take over the download.
- Hold Alt while clicking to prevent IDM from taking over.
- Right-click a link and look for Download with IDM.
- Select text containing links, right-click it, and check whether Download with IDM is available for adding those links.
If a file type is not intercepted, check Options → File Types and confirm that its extension is included.
Fix IDM when the Chrome extension does not work
1. Update IDM and reinstall the current extension
A Chrome update, security application, IDM reinstall, or manual deletion can remove the integration module or leave an obsolete copy behind.
- In IDM, select Help → Check for updates….
- Restart Chrome after updating.
- Open chrome://extensions/.
- Remove an old or duplicate IDM extension if one is present.
- Install the current IDM Integration Module from the direct official listing.
- Open its Details page and enable all-site access if required.
- Restart Chrome again.
2. Do not run Chrome as administrator
IDM integration can fail when Chrome is started in administrator mode. The same problem can occur indirectly when another elevated program launches Chrome, including some file managers such as Total Commander or certain portable-browser launchers.
Close Chrome completely and start it from the normal Windows Start menu or a regular desktop shortcut. Do not use Run as administrator.

3. Repair a corrupted extension installation
Chrome may show errors such as:
- Could not move extension directory into profile
- Access is denied
Security software can damage or block the extension directory. IDM specifically documents the Advertise Blocker component of Net Protector Total Security as one possible cause.
For the default Chrome profile, the extension directory is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions. Non-default Chrome profiles use a different profile directory.
If Net Protector is installed, IDM’s documented workaround is:
- Open Net Protector Total Security.
- Go to Protection → Advertise Blocker.
- Clear Enable Adware Protection.
- Click Apply.
- Repair the permissions on the folder named ngpampappnmepgilojfohadhhmbhlaek in the relevant Chrome profile’s Extensions directory.
- Return to Chrome and reinstall IDM Integration Module.
Do not delete random Chrome profile files while Chrome is running. Close every Chrome window first, and back up the profile if you need to make manual file or permission changes.

If Chrome reports that an existing installation is corrupted, open the official extension listing, click Remove from Chrome, and then click Add to Chrome to install it again.
4. Fix a missing IDM video-download panel
If the IDM video panel is missing, appears in the wrong place, or triggers unwanted downloads, check the following:

- Update IDM.
- Confirm that IDM Integration Module is installed and enabled.
- Allow it to read data on all sites.
- Confirm Chrome integration under IDM → Options → General.
- Restart Chrome.
- Clear Chrome’s cache and temporary files.
Do not use third-party “IDM” extensions
Searching the Chrome Web Store for “IDM” and installing the first result is not official guidance. IDM says its official extension is hidden from store search and warns that extensions found that way may be fake.
Also avoid extensions that claim to provide official integration by launching IDM with a command. IDM prohibits third-party Chrome Web Store extensions from using its command-line integration for this purpose and says it blocks such extensions.
For scripts or local automation—not browser-extension integration—IDM supports command-line syntax such as: idman /d URL [/p local_path] [/f local_file_name] [/q] [/h] [/n] [/a].
For example: IDMan.exe /d “https://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/path/FileName.zip”.
Here, /d downloads a URL, /p sets the save path, /f sets the filename, /q exits IDM after a successful download, /h hangs up the connection, /n enables silent mode, and /a adds the download to the queue without starting it. These commands do not replace the official Chrome integration module.

Why can’t I find the official IDM extension by searching Chrome’s Web Store?

Can I install IDM Integration Module without installing IDM for Windows?
No. The extension is intended to work with the Internet Download Manager desktop application. Install or update IDM first, then add or enable the extension.
Why does Chrome show “Remove from Chrome” instead of “Add to Chrome”?
That means IDM Integration Module is already installed in the current Chrome profile. Open chrome://extensions/, check that it is enabled, configure all-site access, and restart Chrome.
Why is the IDM download panel missing?
Update IDM, verify that IDM Integration Module is enabled and allowed to access all sites, confirm Chrome integration under IDM’s Options → General, restart Chrome, and clear Chrome’s cache and temporary files.
Does IDM work in Chrome Incognito mode?
Yes, but only after opening the extension’s Details page and enabling Allow in incognito.

Chrome may be running with administrator privileges. Close it and launch Chrome normally rather than from an elevated program or portable-browser launcher.
The Bottom Line
The reliable setup is: update the IDM desktop application, install the official IDM Integration Module from its direct Chrome Web Store listing, enable it with access on all sites, turn on Chrome integration in IDM → Options → General, and restart Chrome. If it still fails, check for an old extension, administrator-mode Chrome, blocked extension permissions, or security software such as Net Protector’s Advertise Blocker.
