Windows 11 does not include a built-in AirPlay receiver. An iPhone or iPad will not see a standard Windows 11 PC in its AirPlay list because Windows supports Miracast, not AirPlay.
You can still use AirPlay in several Windows-related setups: send audio from iTunes for Windows to an AirPlay speaker or Apple TV, connect Windows to a display that supports Miracast, or install a third-party AirPlay receiver when you need to mirror an iPhone or iPad to Windows.
What works between Windows 11 and AirPlay?
| What you want to do | Does Windows 11 do it natively? | Correct method |
|---|---|---|
| Mirror an iPhone or iPad to a Windows 11 PC | No | Use a third-party AirPlay receiver app on Windows, or use a wired capture solution. |
| Mirror a Windows 11 laptop to an Apple TV | No | AirPlay-compatible third-party software or an HDMI connection. |
| Connect Windows 11 to a Miracast TV or adapter | Often yes | Press Windows logo key + K. |
| Play Windows iTunes audio through an AirPlay speaker | Yes, through iTunes | Use iTunes’ AirPlay button. |
The important distinction is that AirPlay and Miracast are different wireless-display technologies. The Windows logo key + K shortcut opens Windows’ wireless-display connection panel; it is not an AirPlay shortcut.
How to mirror an iPhone or iPad to Windows 11
Because Windows 11 cannot receive AirPlay by itself, you need an AirPlay receiver application that runs on the PC. These applications make the computer appear as an AirPlay destination to the iPhone or iPad.

- Install a reputable AirPlay receiver application from its official website or the Microsoft Store. Check that it explicitly supports AirPlay receiving and iPhone or iPad screen mirroring; a Miracast-only application will not be enough.
- Launch the receiver application on Windows 11 and allow it through Windows Firewall if Windows displays a network-access prompt. Allowing access on a trusted private network is normally required for discovery.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad and the Windows PC to the same local network. Avoid guest Wi-Fi, which commonly prevents devices from discovering one another.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the upper-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom.
- Tap Screen Mirroring or the AirPlay control, depending on the iOS or iPadOS version.
- Select the Windows receiver’s name and enter a code if the receiver displays one.
If the Windows computer does not appear, confirm that the receiver is open, Wi-Fi is enabled on the PC, both devices are on the same network, and Windows Firewall is not blocking the application. A VPN, access-point isolation, or a guest network can also stop AirPlay discovery.
How to AirPlay audio from Windows 11 with iTunes
Apple still documents AirPlay speaker output in iTunes for Windows. This lets you play music from the iTunes library through an AirPlay-enabled device such as a HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or compatible network speaker.
- Install and open iTunes on the Windows 11 PC.
- Make sure the PC and the AirPlay speaker or Apple TV are connected to the network.
- Start playing audio in iTunes.
- Click the AirPlay button at the top of the iTunes window.
- Select the checkbox beside the speaker or other AirPlay device you want to use.
You can select multiple checkboxes to play through multiple AirPlay sources. To adjust a selected speaker’s volume, open the AirPlay menu and use the volume slider beside that speaker.
This procedure is for audio. It does not turn Windows 11 into an AirPlay screen receiver and does not mirror the Windows desktop to an Apple TV.

- Apple Music handles the music library and Apple Music service.
- Apple TV handles films and television programmes.
- Apple Devices handles iPhone and iPad management.
- iTunes remains used for podcasts and audiobooks and retains Apple’s documented AirPlay speaker-output procedure.
Therefore, if you are specifically looking for Apple’s documented Windows AirPlay speaker controls, use iTunes rather than assuming the Apple Music app has the same interface.
How to connect Windows 11 using Miracast instead
If your target is a wireless display that supports Miracast, Windows’ native feature may be all you need. This applies to many Windows PCs, wireless display adapters, and some smart TVs. It does not make an Apple TV or an AirPlay-only television appear as a Windows wireless display.
- Turn on the Miracast-compatible TV, adapter, or monitor.
- On the Windows 11 PC, press Windows logo key + K.
- Select the display from the connection panel.
- If Windows offers a choice, select whether to duplicate or extend the desktop in Settings → System → Display.
If Windows reports that the PC must be connected with a cable, the computer may lack Miracast support or have an incompatible wireless or graphics driver. That is a Miracast hardware or driver limitation, not an AirPlay failure.
Use a Windows 11 PC as a Miracast receiver
This is useful when another Windows laptop or Android device supports Miracast. It is not a native way to receive AirPlay from an iPhone.
- Open Start → Settings → System → Projecting to this PC.
- Under Optional features, select View features.
- Search for Wireless Display, select it, choose Next, and then select Install.
- Search the taskbar for Wireless Display and open the app.
- On the sending Windows device, press Windows logo key + K and select the receiving PC.
The Wireless Display app is the current Windows 11 path for version 22H2 and later. Instructions that say to install or open the old Connect app apply to earlier Windows versions and are not the normal current procedure.

The receiving PC must have Wi-Fi enabled, even if it is using Ethernet for internet access. Microsoft also requires the Wireless Display feature to be installed and the app to be running before the PC can be discovered.
Fix AirPlay devices that do not appear in iTunes
- Check the network: confirm that the Windows PC is connected to Wi-Fi or the same local network as the AirPlay device.
- Check the destination: make sure the Apple TV, HomePod, AirPort Express, or network speaker is powered on, connected, and not asleep or offline.
- Check Apple TV pairing: Apple notes that an Apple TV may need to be properly connected or paired with the iTunes library being used.
- Restart discovery: close and reopen iTunes, then restart the speaker or Apple TV if it remains absent.
- Check network segmentation: AirPlay discovery uses Bonjour multicast. Devices on different IP subnets generally cannot discover one another unless the network has a Bonjour gateway or service-advertisement configuration.
- Check firewall and VPN software: temporarily test without a VPN and ensure iTunes is allowed on the private Windows network.
On managed office, hotel, school, or apartment networks, client isolation may deliberately prevent devices from communicating. In that situation, changing iTunes settings will not solve the discovery problem; the network administrator must permit AirPlay service discovery, including services such as _airplay._tcp and _raop._tcp.
Understand AirPlay warnings in iTunes
| Indicator | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Speaker or TV icon with a lock | The AirPlay destination requires a password. |
| Exclamation point inside a triangle | The device has an error or is unavailable. |
| Exclamation point, triangle, and lock | The device was selected, but its password has not been entered. |
On Apple TV, device authentication can also be required. The relevant setting is Settings → AirPlay → Security → Require Device Verification. When enabled, the source must authenticate during the initial AirPlay connection.
Newer Apple TV software also changes how the receiver identifies itself. On tvOS 18 and later, AirPlay receivers no longer advertise their device ID or MAC address for this purpose; systems making a RequestMirror request use the device name instead. This is an implementation detail rather than a command you need to enter in Windows.
Remove and reconnect a Windows wireless display
If a Miracast display was previously paired but no longer connects, remove its saved entry:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you AirPlay without the same Wi-Fi?
Some compatible Apple hardware can use peer-to-peer AirPlay, which relies on Bluetooth Low Energy and a temporary Wi-Fi connection rather than the normal shared network. That exception does not give Windows 11 equivalent built-in AirPlay support.
For Windows-based AirPlay receiving, using the same ordinary local network remains the practical requirement. If the receiver is on another subnet, Bonjour discovery may not cross the boundary.
FAQ
Can Windows 11 receive AirPlay from an iPhone without an app?

Is Windows logo key + K an AirPlay shortcut?
No. Windows logo key + K opens Windows’ Miracast and wireless-display connection panel. An Apple TV or AirPlay-only television will not normally appear there.
Can I AirPlay from Windows 11 to an Apple TV?
Not natively for the Windows desktop. iTunes for Windows can send audio to an Apple TV through AirPlay, but desktop or video mirroring requires compatible third-party software or a cable.
Why does my iPhone not see my Windows 11 PC?
The PC is not an AirPlay receiver unless compatible receiver software is installed and running. If receiver software is installed, check that both devices are on the same network, Wi-Fi is enabled, Windows Firewall allows the app, and VPN or guest-network isolation is not blocking discovery.
Does Windows 11’s Wireless Display app support AirPlay?
No. Wireless Display is a Miracast receiver for compatible Windows and other Miracast senders. It does not make the PC appear in the iPhone’s AirPlay menu.

Can iTunes for Windows play audio through HomePod?
Yes. In iTunes, click the AirPlay button at the top of the window and select the checkbox beside the HomePod or other AirPlay-enabled speaker.
The Bottom Line
There is no native “AirPlay to Windows 11” switch. For iPhone or iPad screen mirroring, Windows needs a third-party AirPlay receiver. For Windows-to-display connections, use Miracast with Windows logo key + K. For Windows audio sent to an AirPlay speaker or Apple TV, open iTunes and use its AirPlay button.
