To use an external mod, you first need a compatible mod loader—Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt—and then place the mod’s .jar file in that installation’s mods folder.
The safest method is to open the folder from SKLauncher itself. That avoids putting mods in the wrong .minecraft directory, especially when an installation uses a custom game directory.
Before you start
Check these three details on the mod’s download page:
- Minecraft version: for example,
1.20.1or1.21.1. - Mod loader: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt.
- Dependencies: additional files the mod requires, such as Fabric API.
A Fabric mod cannot be used in a Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt installation. Compatibility can also fail between Minecraft patches, even when they belong to the same general release line. Download the build that matches the Minecraft version and loader you intend to launch.

1. Create a modded installation in SKLauncher
- Open SKLauncher.
- Open Installations Manager.
- Click New Installation, then choose Create new installation.
- Enter a name for the installation, such as
Fabric 1.21.1. - In the version-type list, select the loader required by the mod: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt.
- Select the required Minecraft version and the corresponding loader version.
- Optionally configure the installation icon, game directory, or settings under More Options.
- Click Save.
Do not choose a vanilla installation for a mod. Vanilla Minecraft does not load ordinary external mod .jar files.
2. Open the correct mods folder
In Installations Manager, find the installation you just created. Right-click it and choose Open Installation Directory.
This opens the game directory used by that specific installation. Inside it, look for a folder named mods. If it does not exist, create one with this exact name:
mods
Using Open Installation Directory is preferable to manually guessing the location. SKLauncher allows each installation to use a different game directory, so the usual .minecraft folder may not be the one your selected installation uses.

Default mods paths
When no custom game directory is configured, the default locations are:
| Operating system | Default path |
|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%.minecraftmods |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods/ |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/mods/ |
These paths are only defaults. If you selected Change the game directory while editing the installation, put the files in the mods folder inside that custom directory instead.
3. Copy the mod files into the folder
- Download the mod version that matches your Minecraft version and loader.
- Make sure the downloaded file is the actual Minecraft mod
.jarfile. - Copy or move the
.jarfile into the installation’smodsfolder. - Copy any required dependency files into the same folder.
For example, many Fabric mods require Fabric API. Download the Fabric API build matching your Minecraft and Fabric Loader versions, then place its .jar file beside the mod’s file in mods.
Do not extract a mod .jar file. Also do not assume that any file ending in .jar is a Minecraft mod; the file must be built for the loader and Minecraft version you selected.

4. Launch the installation
- Return to the main SKLauncher window.
- Select the loader installation in the sidebar—for example, your
Fabric 1.21.1installation. - Click Play.
Make sure the selected entry is the modded loader installation, not a vanilla profile. The loader should initialize and then load the compatible files from that installation’s mods folder.
How to add several mods
Use the same process for each mod: verify its Minecraft version, verify its loader, check its dependencies, and copy its .jar file into the same installation-specific mods folder. All files in that folder need to be compatible with the installation you launch.
If you are installing a complete modpack rather than individual files, SKLauncher’s product page also supports browsing and installing modpacks from Modrinth and CurseForge. That built-in modpack feature is separate from manually adding a mod .jar file.
Troubleshooting SKLauncher mods
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The mod has no effect | The wrong installation or folder was used | Open the selected installation’s directory from Installations Manager and confirm the file is in its mods folder. |
| The game launches without the mod | Vanilla was selected | Return to the main window and select the Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt installation before clicking Play. |
| The game crashes during launch | Incompatible version, wrong loader, or missing dependency | Compare the Minecraft version, loader, mod build, and dependency versions. Check the game log for the reported error. |
| A Fabric mod fails to load | Fabric API may be missing or incompatible | Install the matching Fabric API .jar in the same mods folder. |
| A manually installed loader is not visible | SKLauncher has not refreshed its installation list | Restart SKLauncher after installing Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt with its official installer. |
Use the game log after a crash
When the game crashes after you add a mod, do not remove files at random. Check the game log for the named mod, missing dependency, or version conflict. The error commonly identifies whether the Minecraft version, loader, or another required mod is incorrect. If the log points to one newly added file, temporarily remove that file and test again.

What about OptiFine?
OptiFine should not be treated as a normal Fabric mod. SKLauncher’s current documentation says Fabric is not officially supported by OptiFine and documents the multi-mod route using OptiFine as a Forge mod. If you want OptiFine alongside other mods, follow the instructions for the specific Minecraft and Forge versions involved rather than placing an OptiFine file into a Fabric setup.
Does adding a mod require a command?
No. The documented process uses SKLauncher’s graphical interface and your operating system’s file manager. Create the loader installation, open it with Open Installation Directory, place the compatible mod .jar files in mods, and launch that installation.
FAQ
Can SKLauncher run mods without Forge?
Yes. SKLauncher supports Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt. The mod must match the loader selected for the installation.
Where do I put mods in SKLauncher?
Put Minecraft mod .jar files in the mods folder inside the selected installation’s game directory. In SKLauncher, open Installations Manager, right-click the installation, and choose Open Installation Directory.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why is my mod not working in SKLauncher?
Common reasons include launching a vanilla profile, using the wrong game directory, selecting the wrong loader, or downloading a mod for a different Minecraft version. Confirm all three compatibility points: Minecraft version, loader type, and mod build.
Do Fabric mods work with Forge in SKLauncher?
No. A Fabric mod is not interchangeable with a Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt mod. Create an installation using the loader named on the mod’s download page.
Do I need Fabric API for every Fabric mod?
Not every Fabric mod requires it, but many do. Check the mod’s requirements and place the matching Fabric API .jar in the same mods folder when required.
Can SKLauncher install modpacks?
SKLauncher’s current product information says it can browse and install modpacks from Modrinth and CurseForge in one click. This is separate from manually adding individual mod files.

To add a mod in SKLauncher, create an installation for the correct loader and Minecraft version, open that installation’s directory, place the compatible mod .jar files in its mods folder, and launch the loader installation—not vanilla. If it crashes or has no effect, check the game directory, loader, Minecraft version, and required dependencies first.
