Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMissing Windows 11 desktop icons do not always mean the files were deleted. Windows may be hiding every icon, displaying a different Desktop folder, showing a OneDrive-backed folder, or simply missing built-in icons such as Recycle Bin and This PC.
Work through these fixes in order. The first two take only a few seconds; the OneDrive and recovery steps are for cases where the icons are missing from the folder itself.
1. Turn on desktop icon visibility
If every desktop shortcut disappeared at once but the files still exist, Windows may have hidden the icons.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select View.
- Select Show desktop icons.
A check mark should appear beside the option, and the icons should return immediately.

This changes visibility only. It does not recover deleted shortcuts, restore personal files, or switch Windows back to a different Desktop folder.
2. Restore built-in icons such as This PC and Recycle Bin
Windows treats built-in icons differently from ordinary application shortcuts. Use Desktop Icon Settings to restore This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, or Control Panel.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Personalize.
- Select Themes.
- Under Related settings, select Desktop icon settings.
- Check the icons you want to display.
- Select Apply, then OK.
This window controls Windows’ built-in icons. It cannot restore an ordinary shortcut to Chrome, an application, or a personal document.
3. Check both the local and OneDrive Desktop folders
OneDrive can back up Windows’ important folders, including Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos. When Desktop backup or account configuration changes, Windows may be displaying one Desktop folder while your shortcuts are stored in another.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open File Explorer.
- Expand your OneDrive folder in the navigation pane.
- Open its Desktop folder and check whether the missing shortcuts or files are there.
- Also check the local folder at
C:Users<your-user-name>Desktop.
There may be more than one OneDrive account on the computer, including a work or school account. Check those accounts if the expected Desktop folder is not present.
Right-click a suspected Desktop folder, select Properties, and look for the Location tab. If the tab is missing, you may be looking at the wrong Desktop folder—for example, a local folder instead of the OneDrive Desktop folder.

4. Point Windows to the Desktop folder containing the icons
If you found the missing items in another Desktop folder, change the Windows Desktop location to that folder rather than creating duplicate shortcuts.
- In File Explorer, right-click the Desktop folder that Windows is currently using.
- Select Properties, then open the Location tab.
- Select Move.
- Browse to the Desktop folder containing the missing icons.
- Select Select Folder, then Apply.
- When Windows asks whether to move the files from the old location to the new one, select Yes.
After the move completes, return to the desktop. The files and shortcuts in the selected folder should be available there.
Use the same Location procedure for other redirected folders such as Documents and Pictures. Do not change the location until you have identified which folder contains the files you need.
5. Confirm that OneDrive is backing up the correct folder
A Desktop folder can exist in OneDrive without the current OneDrive configuration backing it up or syncing it correctly. Check the current Windows 11 OneDrive controls:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Select the OneDrive Help & Settings icon.
- Select Settings.
- Open the Sync and backup tab.
- Select Manage backup.
Review the status of Desktop. If it is marked Not backed up, turn on the Desktop toggle and select Save changes.
Older instructions may refer to a separate Backup tab. In the current OneDrive interface, the relevant path is Sync and backup > Manage backup.

6. Check OneDrive’s folder selection and sync status
If the files are visible online or inside OneDrive but absent from the local desktop, check whether the relevant folder is selected for synchronization.
- Open OneDrive settings from the cloud icon in the notification area.
- Find Choose folders.
- Make sure the required Desktop folder is selected.
A folder can also have a different name in OneDrive from the corresponding Windows important folder. That naming mismatch can make the wrong folder appear to be the Desktop.
OneDrive may also refuse to move or back up a folder because of a specific file or folder condition:
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Path is too long | Keep the complete path under 260 characters. |
| Unsupported file name | Remove names beginning with a space or containing : / * ? < > " |. |
| File is too large | OneDrive cannot sync a file larger than 250 GB. |
| Folder structure conflict | Important folders must not be nested inside one another. |
| Reparse point | Junction points, symlinks, and other reparse points can prevent backup. |
| File is in use | Save and close files that OneDrive cannot move. |
| Error 0x80070005 | A policy named Prohibit User from manually redirecting Profile Folders may be blocking the change. |
7. Stop OneDrive backup without leaving icons in the wrong place
If OneDrive backup caused the confusion, you can turn it off—but read the choices carefully. Select the OneDrive cloud icon, then go to Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Turn off the toggle for the affected folder.

If OneDrive reports that some files could not be moved, set those files to Always keep on this device first. Cloud-only files must be downloaded before Windows can move them to a local folder.

8. Restore deleted files or recreate deleted shortcuts
If the items are absent from both the local Desktop folder and every relevant OneDrive Desktop folder, they may have been deleted rather than hidden or redirected.
- For OneDrive-backed files, sign in to OneDrive.com.
- Open the OneDrive Recycle bin.
- Find the missing file or shortcut.
- Select it and choose Restore.
You can also check the Windows Recycle Bin for locally deleted items. If a restored file does not reappear in the original position, check the Desktop folder and move it manually.
A deleted shortcut may not retain its original position or appearance. To recreate one, locate the application or file in File Explorer, right-click it, choose Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). The exact shortcut icon and desktop position may differ from the original.
What not to do first
Do not immediately delete the Windows icon cache, edit the registry, or run commonly shared ie4uinit.exe and taskkill command sequences. Microsoft’s current guidance for missing Windows 11 desktop icons uses the graphical visibility, personalization, File Explorer, and OneDrive settings above; it does not require an icon-cache command.
FAQ
Why did all my Windows 11 desktop icons disappear at once?
The icons may simply be hidden. Right-click the desktop, select View, and enable Show desktop icons. If that option is already enabled, check whether Windows is displaying a different local or OneDrive Desktop folder.
Why is Recycle Bin missing but my other shortcuts are still visible?
Recycle Bin is a built-in Windows icon. Go to Personalize > Themes > Related settings > Desktop icon settings, check Recycle Bin, and select Apply and OK.

Does turning off OneDrive backup restore my desktop icons?
Not necessarily. OneDrive lets you keep files only in OneDrive or only on the PC. Choosing the OneDrive-only option can remove items from the local desktop, and cloud-only files may need to be downloaded before they can be moved locally.
Where is the Desktop folder in Windows 11?
The usual local path is C:Users
Do I need to rebuild the Windows icon cache?
Not as a first step. The current Microsoft procedures for missing desktop icons use Windows’ View, Personalization, File Explorer, and OneDrive settings. They do not require an icon-cache deletion or rebuild command.
The Bottom Line
Start with View > Show desktop icons, then restore built-in icons through Desktop icon settings. If ordinary shortcuts are still missing, compare the local and OneDrive Desktop folders and verify the folder’s Location and sync settings. Only after checking those locations should you treat the items as deleted and restore them from Recycle Bin or OneDrive.
