To reply to a particular message in a Microsoft Teams chat, open that message’s actions and select Reply with quote. Teams places a reference to the selected message above your compose box so recipients can see what your response addresses. This works in one-to-one, group, and meeting chats, for messages you received or sent.
Reply to a specific Teams message on Windows or the web
- Open Microsoft Teams, select Chat, and open the relevant conversation.
- Hover over the message you want to answer to show its actions toolbar.
- Select Reply with quote.
- Type your response in the compose box.
- Press Enter or select Send.
The sent message includes a reference to the selected message. Unlike an ordinary new chat message, it makes clear which earlier message you are answering.
Reply to a message you sent
For a message you sent, Reply with quote may be in the message’s More options menu rather than directly on the actions toolbar:
- Hover over your sent message.
- Select More options (…).
- Select Reply with quote.
- Enter your response and send it.
Use the keyboard without a mouse
On the Teams desktop app or website, focus the message you want to answer and press Enter to open its message actions toolbar. Choose Reply with quote, press Enter, and write your response.

This can help when the message is older in a busy conversation and pointer positioning is inconvenient.
Reply to a specific message in the Teams mobile app
- Open the Teams mobile app and go to the relevant chat.
- Locate the message you want to answer.
- Double-tap and hold the message, or open its message actions menu.
- Select Reply with quote.
- Type your response. The quoted message appears above the compose area.
- Tap Send.
Microsoft’s mobile accessibility instructions are not fully consistent about the label: some call the action Reply. Check that the selected message appears above the compose area to confirm you have the quoted-reply function.
Keyboard shortcuts: a limitation to know
Teams shortcuts for replying target the last message in a conversation, not any arbitrary selected message:

To reply to a particular older message, open its actions and choose Reply with quote.

Chat messages versus channel messages
Reply with quote is the chat control. Channel conversations use channel-reply controls instead.
Posts-layout channel
- Open the channel and find the post.
- Select Reply below the post.
- Type your response and send it.
The response remains attached to the original channel post.
Threads-layout channel
- Hover over the channel message.
- Select Reply in thread.
- Choose Thread only or Thread and channel.
- Type and send your response.
If you cannot find Reply with quote, check whether you are viewing a channel rather than a chat. Channel conversations use Reply or Reply in thread, depending on the layout.
Why “Reply with quote” may be missing
You are in a channel
Channel messages normally do not offer the chat-specific quoted-reply action. Use the channel’s Reply or Reply in thread control.

You are viewing your own message
For a message you sent, select More options (…) and look there for Reply with quote.
The message toolbar is hidden
On the desktop app and web version, hover over or select a message to show its toolbar. Keyboard users can focus the message and press Enter to open it.
The icon or wording has changed
Teams may show a quote-style icon or use the label Reply, especially in mobile accessibility instructions. Check whether the original message appears above the compose box; that confirms the function more reliably than the icon or label.
What quoted replies do—and do not do
A quoted reply sends a new message in the same chat with a reference to the earlier message. It does not create a separate private thread.

It is different from:
- sending an ordinary new chat message;
- adding an emoji reaction;
- copying and pasting the original message manually; or
- replying to a channel thread.
To direct someone to a message rather than answer it, use Copy link: hover over the message, select More options (…), and choose Copy link. The link works only for people who have access to the original chat.

Can I reply to an older message in a Teams chat?
Yes. Hover over the older message, open its actions, and select Reply with quote. The standard reply shortcut targets the last message, not an arbitrary older one.
Can I quote a message I sent in Teams?
Yes. Hover over your sent message, select More options (…), choose Reply with quote, and send your response.
Why do I see Reply instead of Reply with quote in Teams mobile?
Microsoft’s mobile accessibility instructions use both labels. Select the action and check whether the chosen message appears above the compose area. If it does, it is the quoted-message reply function.

Does Reply with quote create a private thread?
No. It sends a new message in the existing chat containing a reference to the selected message. Channel replies, not chat quoted replies, remain attached to channel posts or threads.
Can I use Alt+Shift+R to reply to any selected Teams message?
No. In the Windows desktop app, Alt+Shift+R replies to the last message in the conversation. Use the selected message’s action menu to reply to a specific message.
How do I reply to a specific message in a Teams channel?
For a posts-layout channel, select Reply below the post. For a threads-layout channel, hover over the message, select Reply in thread, and choose whether to post to the thread only or to both the thread and channel.
