Windows can tell you a USB device’s name, driver, hardware IDs, connection state, and—in some tools—the hub and logical port to which it is attached. It cannot always translate that information into a physical label such as “the second USB socket on the left side of the laptop.”
Use Device Manager for a quick built-in check, Microsoft USBView for the live USB connection tree, and USBDeview when you need device history and Hub/Port records. A fourth option, PnPUtil, is useful when you prefer commands or need detailed Windows device properties.
What USB port information can Windows actually show?
There are two different kinds of “port information”:
| Information | What it means | Best tool |
|---|---|---|
| Physical chassis port | The socket printed or molded into the computer, such as the left-side port or a port marked USB 3. | Usually requires testing the sockets or checking the computer manufacturer’s documentation. |
| Logical USB topology port | The port number on a USB hub or host controller used internally by Windows. | USBView or USBDeview. |
| Device instance and location path | A Windows identifier describing where the device sits in the Plug and Play device tree. | Device Manager or PnPUtil. |
| Previous connection record | Evidence that Windows has seen the device before, including some historical hub and port data. | USBDeview. |
A logical port number does not always correspond directly to a visible socket number. Internal hubs, docking stations, front-panel wiring, and USB-C controllers can make the relationship less obvious.

Method 1: Use Device Manager
Device Manager is the quickest built-in method. It is useful for checking whether Windows has enumerated the device correctly, whether a driver has a problem, and which hardware identifiers Windows has recorded.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
- In Device Manager, select the computer name at the top of the device tree.
- Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the relevant USB controller, hub, or device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and select a property from the Property drop-down list.
Depending on the device and driver, useful entries can include Status, Problem code, hardware IDs, compatible IDs, device instance information, and location-related values.
Show disconnected or inactive entries
To include devices that are not currently active, open the View menu and select Show hidden devices. A faded device entry indicates that Windows knows about it but it is not currently active; it does not prove that the device is plugged in now.
What a warning icon means
A yellow warning icon or a nonzero Problem code can indicate several different failures:
- The device did not enumerate correctly.
- A driver is missing, damaged, or incompatible.
- The USB port or hub cannot provide sufficient power.
- The cable, hub, device, or port has a hardware fault.
If Windows cannot read the device descriptor, Device Manager may show Unknown USB Device. In that situation, normal VID, PID, serial-number, and port details may not be available because the device did not provide enough information during enumeration.
Device Manager’s port limitation
Device Manager does not reliably expose the physical chassis port number for every USB device. A location string or device-instance path is a Windows topology identifier—not necessarily a label such as “right-side USB port 2.” Use USBView if you need to see the device beneath a particular hub port.
Method 2: Use Microsoft USBView
USBView is Microsoft’s connection-oriented USB diagnostic utility. It displays host controllers, hubs, attached devices, and USB descriptors in a tree, making it the most useful of these methods for investigating the device’s current hub-and-port relationship.

USBView is not normally a Windows 11 Settings feature and is not guaranteed to be preinstalled. Microsoft distributes it through the Windows SDK.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install USBView
- Download and start the Windows SDK installer from Microsoft.
- When the feature list appears, select Debugging Tools for Windows.
- Clear the other SDK options if you do not need them.
- Complete the installation.
On a typical 64-bit installation, the executable is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Debuggers\x64\usbview.exe.
If that file is missing, the usual causes are that Debugging Tools for Windows was not selected or that the SDK was installed in a different Windows Kits directory.
Find a device’s logical hub and port
- Run usbview.exe.
- In the left-hand tree, expand the USB host-controller nodes.
- Expand the hubs beneath the relevant controller.
- Continue expanding hub nodes until your device appears beneath a specific port.
- Select the device to display its information in the right-hand pane.
The right pane can show the device’s Device, Configuration, Interface, and Endpoint Descriptors, along with the current device configuration. This is helpful when identifying a device by its descriptors rather than by its friendly name.
USBView can also report the device’s current bus speed and configuration. Do not confuse the current negotiated speed with the maximum speed supported by the device, cable, hub, or port. For example, a USB 3-capable device may currently be operating at High Speed or Full Speed because of the cable, hub, connection, or negotiation result.

USBView limitations
Microsoft describes USBView as an older application, so it may not display every piece of information exposed by newer USB hardware. If a field is absent, check Device Manager or PnPUtil instead. USBView is strongest for the live connection tree; it is not primarily a historical device inventory tool.

Method 3: Use USBDeview
USBDeview is a portable NirSoft utility that lists USB devices currently connected and devices previously used on the computer. It can show the device description, type, VendorID, ProductID, serial information for mass-storage devices, connection state, registry timestamps, and other recorded data.
Check the Hub/Port column
- Download the appropriate USBDeview build from NirSoft.
- Extract the ZIP file and run USBDeview.exe.
- Connect the USB device if it is not already connected.
- Locate the device in the list.
- Read the Hub/Port column.
NirSoft defines Hub/Port as the hub number and port number into which the device was plugged. For non-mass-storage devices, connecting the same device to different USB sockets can create separate records with different Hub/Port values.
USBDeview automatically refreshes the local list when a device is connected or removed. If you are viewing a remote computer, press F5 to refresh because the remote list does not update automatically.
Important USBDeview exceptions
The Hub/Port field is empty for mass-storage devices. USBDeview also creates only one record for a mass-storage device even if you move it between ports. Therefore, one record—or no Hub/Port value—does not prove that a flash drive or external disk was used in only one socket.
USBDeview’s older “Created Date” terminology should not be treated as a universally reliable first-plug timestamp. NirSoft changed the terminology in version 3.00 to Registry Time 1 and Registry Time 2 because the meaning varies by system. NirSoft also documents incorrect timestamp values on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2008. The current NirSoft page identifies USBDeview as version 3.10.
Use the correct build on 64-bit Windows
USBDeview supports Windows 2000 through Windows 11 in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, although Windows 98 and Windows ME are not supported. On 64-bit Windows, use the x64 build if you need to enable or disable USB items. NirSoft states that the 32-bit build cannot perform those operations correctly on x64 systems.

The USB Version field depends on the Retrieve USB Power/Version Information option. If retrieval is disabled, USB-version information will not be populated.
Export the USB inventory
USBDeview can export its list from the command line. Create C:\Temp first if it does not exist, then run one of these commands:
- USBDeview.exe /stext “C:\Temp\usb.txt”
- USBDeview.exe /stab “C:\Temp\usb.tsv”
- USBDeview.exe /scomma “C:\Temp\usb.csv”
- USBDeview.exe /shtml “C:\Temp\usb.html”
- USBDeview.exe /sverhtml “C:\Temp\usb-vertical.html”
- USBDeview.exe /sxml “C:\Temp\usb.xml”
To include entries that are normally omitted, you can use options such as:
- USBDeview.exe /DisplayDisconnected 1
- USBDeview.exe /DisplayHubs 1
- USBDeview.exe /DisplayNoPortSerial 1
- USBDeview.exe /DisplayNoDriver 1
For USB-to-serial FTDI devices, USBDeview may display the COM-port name stored in the Registry—for example, COM3—in the column labeled Drive Letter.

To list devices that are not currently connected, use pnputil /enum-devices /disconnected /properties.
To rescan for hardware changes, use pnputil /scan-devices. This option is available starting with Windows 10 version 2004. PnPUtil is good for Windows device-instance, bus, interface, driver, and property data, but it does not present the USB connection tree as clearly as USBView or provide USBDeview’s historical Hub/Port records.
Which method should you use?
| Your goal | Use |
|---|---|
| Check whether Windows detects the device and whether its driver has a problem | Device Manager |
| See the device beneath a live USB hub and logical port | USBView |
| Review previously connected devices and recorded Hub/Port values | USBDeview |
| Collect detailed device properties from a script or elevated console | PnPUtil |
| Identify the actual socket on the case | Use one of the tools, then unplug and reconnect the device while testing the physical sockets |
Practical way to map a logical port to a physical socket
If you need to identify the real socket rather than only the Windows topology path, keep USBView open and perform a controlled test:
- Disconnect the target device.
- Refresh the view, or wait for the device to disappear.
- Plug it into one physical socket.
- Note the hub and logical port shown by USBView.
- Repeat for each socket you need to identify.
For a device that does not enumerate, start with a different cable, remove intermediate hubs, try a powered hub if appropriate, and check Device Manager for a Problem code. A failed descriptor read can prevent all three tools from identifying the device normally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFAQ
Can Device Manager show which physical USB port a device is using?
Not reliably. It can show device-instance, location, and driver information, but those values are Windows topology identifiers. They do not consistently translate to a physical label such as “the laptop’s left USB port.” Use USBView for the logical hub/port relationship, then test the physical sockets if an exact mapping is required.
Why does USBView show a different port number than the number on my computer?
USBView reports a logical port on a USB hub or host-controller tree. Internal hubs and USB-C controller designs can make that number differ from the numbering printed on the chassis.
Why is USBDeview’s Hub/Port field blank?
NirSoft documents that the field is empty for mass-storage devices. USBDeview also keeps one record for a mass-storage device when it is moved between ports, so it is not a complete port-history system for flash drives and external disks.
Why does a USB device appear as Unknown USB Device?
Windows may have failed to read the device descriptor. Possible causes include a bad cable, insufficient power, a damaged device or port, or a driver and enumeration problem. Because the descriptor was not read successfully, VID, PID, serial-number, and port details may be unavailable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is USBView already included with Windows 11?
It is not guaranteed to be preinstalled. Microsoft’s documented installation method is to install the Windows SDK and select the Debugging Tools for Windows component.
The Bottom Line
Start with Device Manager when you need a built-in status and driver check. Install Microsoft USBView when the important question is which logical hub and port currently contains the device. Use USBDeview for a broader device history, while remembering that its Hub/Port and timestamp fields have important exceptions. For scripted or detailed command-line output, use PnPUtil.
