DuckDuckGo Browser problems usually fall into a few categories: the app will not install, pages break, bookmarks or passwords disappear, the VPN blocks a site or local device, or the browser crashes. The right fix depends on which layer is failing. Do not uninstall the browser as a first step—locally stored bookmarks and passwords can be deleted if Sync & Backup was not enabled.
This guide covers Windows, macOS, iPhone and iPad, and Android, with the exact settings paths for the most common failures.
1. DuckDuckGo Browser will not install on Windows
Check the Windows version before trying repeated downloads. DuckDuckGo Browser for Windows requires Windows 10, May 2020 update, or later.
“This package is not compatible with the device”
This message generally indicates that Windows is too old or does not meet the browser’s platform requirements. Run Windows Update, restart the computer, and try the installation again. You can check for updates under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows 10 builds, or Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11.

“Error parsing application package”
Use the official Windows package rather than opening a damaged or incomplete download:
- Download the official DuckDuckGo.msixbundle file from DuckDuckGo.
- Open File Explorer and go to Downloads.
- Double-click the downloaded .msixbundle file.
- Select Install when Windows displays the package installer.
If the file was downloaded in a browser session that was interrupted, delete it and download a fresh copy from the official DuckDuckGo website.
“x86 Support is Ending”
The current DuckDuckGo help page says that Windows support for x86 architecture ends after version 0.170.0. An existing installation can continue to run, but it will not receive updates. Continued updates require x64 Windows 10 or Windows 11.
To check your architecture, open Settings > System > About and inspect System type. If it says “32-bit operating system,” the computer cannot receive the current x64 browser updates. Do not rely on older advice claiming the cutoff was version 0.169.0; the current official information uses 0.170.0.
2. Bookmarks or passwords disappeared
DuckDuckGo stores bookmarks and passwords locally. Uninstalling the browser deletes that local data from the device unless Sync & Backup or an applicable restore option was already enabled.
Before uninstalling or reinstalling
First check Settings > Sync & Backup. If you still have access to the browser, enable one of these options:
- Sync and Back Up This Device: creates a backup for the current device. Save the Recovery Code when setup finishes.
- Sync With Another Device: transfers data between two devices. The other device can scan the displayed QR code, or you can use a text code.
Do not save the Recovery Code only on the device you are about to erase. Store it in a password manager, printed document, or another secure location.
Enable backup on one device
- Open DuckDuckGo.
- Go to Settings > Sync & Backup.
- Select Sync and Back Up This Device.
- Complete the setup and save the Recovery Code.
Sync two devices
- Update DuckDuckGo to the latest version on both devices.
- Open DuckDuckGo on both devices.
- On each device, open Settings > Sync & Backup > Sync With Another Device.
- Scan the QR code shown on the computer with the phone or tablet, or choose the manual code option.
For manual pairing, use View Code on desktop or Share Text Code on mobile. On the receiving device, choose Enter Code on desktop or Manually Enter Code on mobile.

Recover data after losing a device
On a replacement device, open Settings > Sync & Backup > Recover Synced Data. Follow the prompts, then scan the QR code or enter the alphanumeric code from the recovery PDF.
If every synced device was lost, the Recovery Code is unavailable, and no other device still has Sync & Backup enabled, DuckDuckGo cannot recover the data. The service does not possess your Recovery Code or decryption key.
Encrypted backup data also has a retention limit. If Sync & Backup is disabled on every device, or DuckDuckGo is deleted from every enabled device, the backup remains on the server for 18 months from the last access. After that period of inactivity, it is deleted and cannot be recovered.
Restore after reinstalling
The Restore on App Reinstall feature can restore bookmarks, passwords, Duck.ai chats, and credit cards on the same device after reinstalling. It is managed under Settings > Sync & Backup and can be disabled there. This is not a substitute for saving the Recovery Code if you need to move data to another device.

DuckDuckGo blocks listed third-party tracking requests, tracking cookies, fingerprinting scripts, and some CNAME-cloaked trackers. It makes limited exceptions when blocking would stop sign-in or essential site functionality. A site that depends on persistent cross-site cookies, embedded cookies, or a blocked tracking script can therefore malfunction.
Test whether privacy protection is the cause
- Open the site in DuckDuckGo and note the specific failure: missing buttons, an endless sign-in loop, blank embedded content, or a form that will not submit.
- Try the site after temporarily changing the site’s privacy protections, if that control is available in your version of DuckDuckGo.
- Reload the page and test the affected feature again.
- If the site works only after protection is relaxed, re-enable protection and decide whether the site is important enough to add as a Fireproof Site.
Use this as a diagnosis rather than turning off protections globally. If the site still fails, test another network and check whether the same page works in a different browser. That separates a DuckDuckGo compatibility issue from a server, DNS, account, or network problem.
Use Fireproof Sites for reliable sign-in
Fireproofing preserves useful first-party cookies and storage that the Fire Button would otherwise remove. This is useful for services that repeatedly sign you out or rely on local web storage.
Fireproof Sites and automatic clearing when the browser restarts are managed from DuckDuckGo’s Settings. Add only services that require persistent sign-in; fireproofing more sites means retaining more local site data.

Do not expect the Fire Button to erase everything
The Fire Button clears website cookies, caches, favicons, open tabs, back-button history, visited URLs, and website permissions such as camera, microphone, and location permissions. It does not clear:
- First-party cookies and storage for Fireproof Sites
- Bookmarks
- Downloaded files
- DuckDuckGo Search settings and associated storage
If you are troubleshooting a site, pressing Fire may remove the session you were trying to preserve. Use it deliberately, then sign in again if necessary.
Platform-specific causes
On Android, fingerprinting API overrides do not apply inside iframes because of Android WebView limitations. On iPhone, iPad, and macOS, platform limitations can cause some scripts to be blocked before DuckDuckGo can apply its usability-preserving “Surrogates.” These limitations can affect embedded login windows, payment controls, video players, or other components inside a page.
4. DuckDuckGo VPN will not connect
The VPN requires two prerequisites: DuckDuckGo Browser must be installed, and a DuckDuckGo subscription must be activated inside the browser.

Connection drops or pages stop loading
DuckDuckGo VPN automatically attempts to reconnect or switch servers. While it is reconnecting, it temporarily blocks Internet traffic to prevent accidental leaks. A short loss of connectivity during a server change is therefore expected behavior, not necessarily a browser crash.
Wait briefly, then check whether the VPN status returns to connected. If it does not:
- Turn the VPN off.
- Reload the site.
- Reconnect the VPN and try again.
- Test another network if the connection continues to fail.
DuckDuckGo’s troubleshooting guidance says firewall settings do not need to be updated to use the VPN, so changing firewall rules should not be your first fix.
A website or app works only when the VPN is off
Some websites and apps block VPN traffic. Turn off the VPN and reload the affected service. If it works immediately, the service is rejecting the VPN connection. Unless your platform provides an exclusion for that use, you must leave the VPN disabled while using it.

Android: exclude one app from the VPN
On Android, use three-dot icon > Settings > VPN > Excluded Apps, then disable VPN protection for the affected app. This Android path should not be treated as universal: DuckDuckGo says equivalent exclusion features are planned for iOS, Mac, and Windows.
Printers and smart-home devices cannot be reached
Local networks are excluded from the VPN by default on Android, iOS, and Mac, which allows printers and smart-home devices to work normally. Windows does not yet have the same documented local-network exclusion. On Windows, temporarily disable the VPN while accessing the printer or local device.
5. Android says App Tracking Protection is a VPN
App Tracking Protection is not a conventional encrypted VPN. It runs locally between Android apps and the servers they contact, blocking recognized third-party trackers while allowing other app traffic through. It uses Android’s VPN interface so it can monitor app traffic, which is why Android displays VPN-related permission or status messages.
Android permits only one active VPN connection per device. App Tracking Protection works alongside DuckDuckGo VPN because both are managed by DuckDuckGo, but it cannot operate simultaneously with another VPN app.

Use App Tracking Protection with another VPN
If a different VPN app keeps taking control of the Android VPN interface:
- Open Android Network settings > VPN.
- Tap the gear icon beside the other VPN.
- Disable Always-on.
- Open the other VPN app and disable its auto-connect setting, if it has one.
You may need to choose between the third-party VPN and App Tracking Protection. Disabling Always-on alone may not be enough if the other app reconnects automatically.

Before contacting support, record the operating system, DuckDuckGo version, what action triggers the crash, and whether it happens on one page or every page. A crash report is especially useful because it can identify whether the failure is tied to a particular component.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements. This path applies to iOS 16 or newer.
- Tap Analytics Data.
- Find the newest log beginning with DuckDuckGo.
- Open the log, tap the Share icon, and send it to DuckDuckGo Support as an attachment.
macOS
- Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Console.
- Select Crash Reports in the left sidebar.
- Locate the newest DuckDuckGo report.
- Right-click the file name and choose Reveal in Finder.
- Attach the report file to your support request.
Windows
- Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for recent entries with a source of DuckDuckGo or Application Error that reference DuckDuckGo.
- To narrow the list, right-click Application, choose Filter Current Log…, select Error, and limit the time range to the last 12 hours.
Use Save All Events As… to export an .evtx file, or right-click an event and copy its XML Details for Support. Include the time of the crash so the relevant event is easier to identify.

7. A practical troubleshooting order
When the cause is unclear, use this order to avoid destroying useful data:
- Record the exact error message and affected device.
- Update DuckDuckGo and, on Windows, confirm the required Windows version and architecture.
- Test the same page or app with the VPN disabled.
- Check whether tracker protection, cookies, or Fireproof Site settings explain page-specific failures.
- Restart the browser and device.
- Enable Sync & Backup and save the Recovery Code.
- Only then consider uninstalling and reinstalling.
- If the browser crashes, collect the platform-specific report before reinstalling.
This sequence separates compatibility, privacy-protection, VPN, and local-data problems without making an irreversible change too early.
