1. Apple Screen Sharing — best built-in Mac option
Apple Screen Sharing is the simplest choice when both computers are Macs and they are reachable on the same network. It uses the VNC standard and is already part of macOS, so there is no third-party account or client to deploy for basic Mac-to-Mac access.
Turn it on
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing.
- Click the Info button next to Screen Sharing.
- Turn on Screen Sharing.
- Under Allow access for, choose All users or Only these users.
- For a restricted list, select Add > select users > Select, then click Done.
The settings also include Anyone may request permission to control screen and VNC viewers may control screen with password. Choose the narrowest access that fits your situation.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Trackpad is wireless and rechargeable, and it includes the full range of Multi-Touch gestures and Force Touch technology.
- Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content.
- It features a large edge-to-edge glass surface area, making scrolling and swiping through your favourite content more productive and comfortable than ever.
- Magic Trackpad pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
There is one easy-to-miss restriction: Remote Management must be off. Current macOS does not allow Screen Sharing and Remote Management to be enabled simultaneously. Apple Remote Desktop is a separate paid management product, not a way around that restriction.
Choose it if: you need occasional access to another Mac on your local network. Do not choose it as your default internet remote-access plan; Apple describes it primarily for remote computers on your network rather than as a built-in internet relay service.
2. Windows App — best for Windows desktops from a Mac
Microsoft’s current client is called Windows App, replacing the former Remote Desktop client name. From macOS, it supports connections to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and supported remote PCs.
It is a strong fit for people who use a Mac laptop but work inside a Windows environment. Microsoft lists support for multiple monitors, custom and dynamic display resolutions, webcam, audio, storage and printer redirection, and Microsoft Teams optimizations.
There is an account distinction worth checking before deployment:
- Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services require sign-in.
- That sign-in requires a work or school account; a personal Microsoft account cannot be used for Windows App sign-in.
- Supported remote-PC connections can work without signing in.
Do not follow old instructions that tell users to download “Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac” as though it were the current product. Microsoft’s current documentation identifies Windows App as its replacement. Microsoft also says the older Remote Desktop app for Windows reached end of support in September 2025, while the Windows MSI client and Remote Desktop web client lost public-cloud support on March 27, 2026.
3. Chrome Remote Desktop — best for uncomplicated personal access
Chrome Remote Desktop is convenient when the users already rely on Google accounts and want to reach a home or work computer from another computer, phone, or tablet. Google says the service uses WebRTC and Google infrastructure.
The current website separates its two main jobs:
- Open Chrome Remote Desktop and click Sign in.
- Choose Access my computer for persistent access to your own computer.
- Choose Provide Support for a support or collaboration session with another person.
This distinction matters when troubleshooting setup. Current instructions that tell users to find one generic “Remote Desktop” button are likely describing an older interface. Persistent access and one-time support are separate flows, so select the one matching the job.

- Windows 10/11 Only: The T1 Plus wireless trackpad is designed exclusively for Windows 11 and Windows 10 (PC, laptop, desktop), Not compatible with Mac, Chrome OS, or Linux. Using it on unsupported systems may cause: Missing or malfunctioning gestures and Repeated Bluetooth disconnections and reconnections
- Bluetooth Connection Only – No USB Receiver or wired mode: Connects to up to 3 devices simultaneously via three Bluetooth channels, and Press the mode switch button to jump between laptop, PC, or tablet, The Type-c charging cable is only for charging and cannot be connected to a computer to achieve wired touch function
- Type‑C Fast Charging: Built‑in 500mAh rechargeable battery, Up to 50 hours of use on a full charge, Use the included Type‑C cable for quick charging and the charging cable is for charging only – does not support wired touchpad mode

- Extra Large Metal Touchpad: 6.4-inch large touchscreen, measuring 6.4*4.8*0.4 inches, combined with an ultra-smooth surface, provides a more comfortable and efficient user experience for performing a variety of operations
Choose it if: you want a low-friction remote connection without a business support suite. Look elsewhere if: you need detailed technician administration, extensive reporting, or a formal help-desk workflow.
4. Jump Desktop — best browser/native flexibility
Jump Desktop is useful when the person controlling the computer should not have to install a native client. It supports browser-based connections as well as native-app connections.
For a browser session, sign in at app.jumpdesktop.com, click My Computers, and select the target computer. Online computers appear in that list and clicking one starts the connection.
The remote computer must have Jump Desktop Connect 7 or later for browser connections. When that version is present, shared screen links can offer a choice between a native-app connection and a browser connection. Teams users see a Connect button with a drop-down menu for the same choice.
The practical advantage is flexibility: use the native experience when it is installed and use the browser when working from a borrowed or locked-down computer. The old claim that Jump Desktop always requires its native client is no longer accurate.
5. TeamViewer Remote — best general-purpose support tool
TeamViewer Remote remains a broad-purpose option for remote support and access across mixed environments. The important Mac issue is version compatibility: the newest TeamViewer build is not automatically the correct build for every macOS release.
| macOS | TeamViewer support begins at | Estimated OS support end |
|---|---|---|
| macOS 26 Tahoe | TeamViewer 15.70.5 | November 2029 |
| macOS 15 Sequoia | TeamViewer 15.59 | November 2028 |
| macOS 14 Sonoma | TeamViewer 15.47 | November 2027 |
| macOS 13 Ventura | TeamViewer 15.41.7 | November 2026 |
| macOS 12 Monterey | Legacy versions 15.23–15.71 | Legacy; no further updates or fixes |
TeamViewer labels its offerings separately, including TeamViewer Remote and TeamViewer ONE. Check the support table before installing: using a current build on an older Mac can fail, or leave the Mac running an unsupported legacy build. TeamViewer also notes that its end-of-support dates are estimates and may change if Apple changes its security-update policy.
6. AnyDesk — best for broad cross-platform coverage
AnyDesk is a familiar cross-platform remote-access choice, but its capabilities vary sharply by operating system. That matters if “cross-platform” means controlling phones and tablets rather than merely connecting from them.

- MULTI-TOUCH GESTURES: Wireless trackpad offers multi-touch control with up to four finger gestures and built-in left and right mouse buttons
- DUAL DEVICE CONTROL: Connects two devices at a time via Bluetooth; press the mode switch button to jump between the two devices
- SLIM DESIGN: Slim portable design with colored indicator lights for enhanced functionality
- RECHARGEABLE BATTERY: USB-C port for recharging the lithium battery
- DEVICE COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows OS; not compatible with macOS, Chrome OS, or Linux
- On iOS and iPadOS, AnyDesk supports version 16 and later, but remote control of those devices is not supported because of vendor restrictions. A paid outgoing client is required to connect.
- On ChromeOS, remote viewing is supported, but remote control is not supported because of vendor restrictions.
- On Android, version 5 and later are supported; controlling an Android device requires a control plugin.
- File transfer and session recording can have limitations on iOS because of platform restrictions.
Therefore, do not promise customers that AnyDesk can fully control an iPhone or iPad. It cannot under the restrictions described in AnyDesk’s current documentation. For Mac-to-Mac or Mac-to-PC work, evaluate it as a conventional remote-access product; for mobile support, verify the exact control capability first.
7. Splashtop — best when the remote-access roles need to be clear
Splashtop’s current download page makes a distinction that prevents a common setup mistake:
- Business App: install it on devices you connect from.
- Business Streamer: install it on devices you connect into.
For ordinary unattended access to a remote Mac, installing only the Business App on that Mac is insufficient; the remote device needs Business Streamer. The Business App is offered for Windows, macOS, Chromebook, Linux, iOS, and Android. Business Streamer is offered for Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, and Android.
Splashtop separates downloads into Remote Access, Remote Support, Enterprise, and AEM categories. For technician-initiated support, its temporary client is labelled SOS Assistance App, with users directed to sos.splashtop.com or sos.splashtop.eu.
The current download page lists macOS 10.13 or later as the minimum Mac requirement, along with Windows 7 or later, iOS 14 or later, and Android 5.0 or later. If you are documenting a rollout, name the exact component rather than telling users to install a generic “Splashtop app.”
8. Zoho Assist — best for technician-led support
Zoho Assist is aimed at support operations rather than only personal remote access. It supports attended sessions and unattended access from Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Chrome OS.
Its component model is more structured than a single desktop application. Current documentation refers to the Customer Console, Technician Console, Web client, Windows Native client, and Desktop plugin. A technician may work from the Web client or Technician Console while the customer uses the Customer Console or a platform-specific client.
Useful support features include scheduled sessions, file transfers up to 100 GB, Wake on LAN, multi-monitor navigation, remote reboot with session rejoin, text/audio/video chat, screen annotation, AES-256 encryption, and multifactor authentication. Zoho currently advertises a 15-day free trial.

Choose it if: you are designing a repeatable customer-support process. Expect more setup terminology than with a simple personal remote-access utility because the technician and customer sides are intentionally separate.
9. RealVNC Connect — best for modern VNC and on-demand help
RealVNC Connect now combines the former RealVNC Viewer and RealVNC Server into one unified desktop application. This is important when following older deployment guides that require installing Viewer and Server as permanently separate products.
For short support sessions, Code Connect uses an invite-only session code. The code expires after 2 minutes and is replaced with a new one. RealVNC’s HelpDesk product also includes On-Demand Assist: the end user downloads and runs the support app, enters the technician’s session code, and does not need to install the Connect app. RealVNC says the end user does not need administrator rights to install software for this type of session.
Listed in-session tools include two-way file transfer, two-way chat, session recording, multi-monitor support, and a redesigned toolbar. RealVNC covers macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android, including the no-install support-app workflow for HelpDesk sessions.

One compatibility warning remains: RealVNC says some features in Version 8 are not backward-compatible. Check its Help Center before mixing Version 8 components with older deployments.

RustDesk is worth considering when you want an alternative to the large commercial remote-support platforms. Its Mac experience can be affected by keyboard translation settings and macOS privacy permissions, so it is especially important to troubleshoot the actual failure rather than simply reinstalling the app.
Fix strange keyboard input
RustDesk 1.2.0 and later document Map mode, Translate mode, and Legacy mode. Map mode maps keys by physical position rather than character: a QWERTY q can arrive as a on an AZERTY remote keyboard. RustDesk does not recommend Map mode for ordinary office work. Translate mode can also cause trouble in games or other software that processes scan codes.
On macOS, RustDesk says keyboard translation requires Input Monitoring permission and the input source Input source 1. If typing is wrong, check those items before changing unrelated settings.

RustDesk is a better fit for technically confident users who are prepared to check permissions, modes, and logs. It is less ideal when every end user needs a highly managed support workflow with minimal explanation.
How to choose remote desktop software for a Mac
- Identify the destination. For another Mac on the same network, start with Apple Screen Sharing. For a Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop session, use Windows App.
- Decide whether access is attended or unattended. Support sessions where someone is sitting at the remote Mac favor Zoho Assist, TeamViewer Remote, RealVNC On-Demand Assist, or Splashtop SOS. Regular access to your own computer needs a persistent host setup.
- Check whether a browser connection matters. Jump Desktop and RealVNC provide useful browser or no-install support paths. Chrome Remote Desktop is also convenient when its Google-based workflow is sufficient.
- Match the software to the Mac’s macOS release. TeamViewer’s compatibility table is a concrete example of why “download the latest version” is not always correct.
- Plan for permissions. Screen control, Input Monitoring, audio, webcam, storage, and other functions may require macOS privacy permissions. A connection that displays the screen but cannot type or control it often has a permission problem rather than a network problem.
- Install the correct side of the product. Splashtop requires Business Streamer on the computer being accessed. Zoho Assist separates technician and customer components. Confusing these roles is a common reason a computer does not appear online.
- Restrict access. Use an allow-list where the product provides one, avoid exposing a Mac directly to the public internet, and remove unattended access when it is no longer needed.
Our picks
- Best built-in solution: Apple Screen Sharing, when the Macs are on a trusted network.
- Best Windows work setup: Windows App.

FAQ
Does macOS have built-in remote desktop software?
Yes. Apple Screen Sharing is built into macOS. Enable it at Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing, then open the Info button beside Screen Sharing. It is primarily intended for access from computers on your network.
Can Screen Sharing and Remote Management be enabled together on a Mac?
No. Current macOS treats Screen Sharing and Remote Management as mutually exclusive services. Remote Management must be turned off before Screen Sharing can be enabled.
What replaced Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac?
Microsoft’s current product is Windows App. From macOS it connects to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and supported remote PCs.

Chrome Remote Desktop provides a web interface, Jump Desktop supports browser connections when Jump Desktop Connect 7 or later is installed on the remote computer, and RealVNC offers browser or no-install support workflows through its HelpDesk features.
Can AnyDesk fully control an iPhone or iPad?
No. AnyDesk’s current documentation says remote control of iOS and iPadOS devices is not supported because of vendor restrictions. File transfer and session recording can also have iOS limitations.
Why can a Splashtop user connect from a Mac but not into a Mac?
Splashtop separates the products by role. Business App is for devices you connect from, while Business Streamer is for devices you connect into. The remote Mac ordinarily needs Business Streamer.
Why is RustDesk typing incorrectly on macOS?
Check the selected keyboard mode. Map mode uses physical key positions and can change characters between keyboard layouts; Translate mode can conflict with software that reads scan codes. RustDesk also says keyboard translation requires macOS Input Monitoring permission and Input source 1.
The Bottom Line
For Mac-to-Mac access on a trusted network, use Apple Screen Sharing. For a Mac connecting to Microsoft-managed Windows desktops, use Windows App. Chrome Remote Desktop and Jump Desktop are convenient for straightforward personal access, while TeamViewer Remote, Zoho Assist, Splashtop, and RealVNC Connect are better suited to organized support work. AnyDesk and RustDesk are capable cross-platform alternatives, but both require closer attention to platform restrictions or local permissions.
Whichever product you choose, verify the remote-side component, macOS compatibility, privacy permissions, and whether you need attended or unattended access before deploying it.
