To share audio in a Microsoft Teams meeting, join the meeting, select Share in the meeting controls, turn on Include sound (also shown as Computer sound in some versions), and then choose what to share. Teams sends the sound from your computer to meeting participants.
This is different from sharing your microphone. Your microphone shares your voice; Include sound shares audio from a video, music player, browser tab, presentation, or other app.
Share computer audio during a Teams meeting
- Join or start the Teams meeting.
- Open the meeting controls by moving your pointer over the meeting window.
- Select Share. Depending on your Teams version, this may be the screen-and-arrow icon or an option labelled Share content.
- Turn on Include sound or Include computer sound.
- Choose what to share: your entire screen, a specific window, or a browser tab.
- Start the audio or video you want participants to hear.
Participants should now hear the computer’s playback. They do not need to be able to see the app separately, but sharing the relevant window or screen usually makes it easier for them to follow the audio.
Stop sharing audio
Select Stop sharing in the meeting toolbar. This stops both the shared screen or window and its computer audio. If you want to continue sharing the screen without its sound, open the sharing controls and switch Include sound off, where that control is available.

Share audio from a video or browser tab
For a YouTube video, web-based presentation, or other browser content:
- Open the browser tab before sharing.
- In Teams, select Share.
- Enable Include sound.
- Select the browser window or tab you want to show.
- Play the video or audio.
Sharing only the browser window is preferable to sharing the entire desktop because participants see less unrelated content. If Teams offers a specific browser-tab option, select the tab containing the media and confirm that audio sharing is enabled.
Share audio from an app such as Windows Media Player or Spotify
- Open the media app and queue the content, but do not start playback yet.
- In Teams, select Share and enable Include sound.
- Select the app window, if it appears as an available window, or share your screen.
- Start playback after the share begins.
Some protected or subscription-based media services may prevent capture, or may produce silence for other participants. Test the exact content before an important meeting.
Share audio without accidentally sharing private content
Teams’ computer-audio option is normally tied to screen, window, or content sharing. Before selecting Screen, close private documents, notifications, email, and unrelated browser tabs. Use Window instead when you only need to show one application.

For a meeting in which people only need to hear a short clip, consider one of these safer options:
- Share a window containing the media player rather than the whole desktop.
- Send the audio file or a link in the meeting chat instead of playing it live.
- Mute desktop notifications and pause other media applications before sharing.
Share an audio file in a Teams chat
If you mean sending an audio recording rather than playing computer sound in a meeting, attach the file to a chat or channel message.
- Open the chat or channel.
- In the compose box, select Actions and apps and then Attach file. You can also drag the audio file into the message area on desktop.
- Choose the audio file from your computer.
- Add a message if needed.
- Select Send.
Common formats such as MP3, WAV, M4A, and AAC generally work as ordinary attachments, although playback depends on the recipient’s device and organization policies. A large recording may be better shared as a OneDrive or SharePoint link.
Share audio on Teams from a Mac
On macOS, Teams may request permission to record the screen or capture system audio. Approve the request in System Settings under Privacy & Security, then restart Teams if prompted.

- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. If Teams displays an audio-driver installation prompt, follow it only if you trust the Teams installation and have permission to install software. Company-managed Macs may require an administrator to approve or deploy the component. Without the required macOS permission or audio component, participants may see your shared screen but hear no computer audio.
Share audio from Teams on the web
Teams in a supported browser can offer the same Share and Include sound controls as the desktop client, but browser permissions can affect the result. Allow the browser to use screen sharing when asked and select the correct tab, window, or screen in the browser’s sharing dialog.
If the audio option is missing or unreliable in the browser, use the Teams desktop app, particularly for music, training videos, or other content where synchronized sound matters.
Share audio on Teams mobile
In the Teams mobile app, join the meeting and tap More (usually the three-dot menu). Look for Share or Share screen. Mobile screen sharing may include a Share device audio or similar toggle, depending on the phone, operating system, and Teams version.

Fix Teams audio-sharing problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Participants see the screen but hear nothing | Computer audio was not enabled, or the wrong sharing source was selected. | Stop sharing, select Share again, enable Include sound, and then choose the window or screen. |
| You hear the audio but participants do not | The sound is coming from a different device, or Teams lacks system-audio permission. | Check the selected speaker in Teams and the operating system. On Mac, review screen and audio permissions in Privacy & Security. |
| Audio is distorted or echoes | The same meeting is open on another device, or the sound is being captured through a speaker and microphone. | Leave the meeting on the second device, mute its microphone and speakers, or use headphones. Use computer-audio sharing instead of playing sound through speakers. |
| Participants hear notification sounds | System alerts are included with computer audio. | Turn on Do Not Disturb or Focus mode and close unrelated apps before sharing. |
| Shared video and sound are out of sync | Network congestion, high CPU use, or browser playback issues. | Stop other downloads and demanding apps, use a wired or stronger connection, and try the Teams desktop app. |
| The Include sound control is missing | The client, device, meeting policy, or selected sharing mode does not support it. | Update Teams, try the desktop app, select a screen or window rather than an unsupported content type, and ask your administrator whether screen sharing is restricted. |
Best practices for a live audio share
- Run a short test with another participant before the presentation.
- Start playback only after Teams confirms that sharing has begun.
- Use headphones to reduce echo.
- Keep the media volume moderate; participants control their own Teams speaker volume, but an overdriven source will still sound bad.
- Use content you are licensed or authorized to play for the meeting audience.
- Stop sharing when the clip ends so unrelated computer audio is not broadcast accidentally.
FAQ
Why can’t people hear my video in Teams?
You probably shared the screen or window without enabling Include sound. Stop sharing, select Share, turn on Include sound, and start the share again.
Can I share only audio in a Teams meeting?
Teams’ main computer-audio control is usually offered with screen, window, or content sharing. If you do not need to show the source, share a minimal window or send the audio file or link in chat instead.
Does sharing computer sound mute my microphone?
No. Computer-audio sharing and microphone audio are separate. Mute your microphone if you do not want participants to hear your voice or nearby sounds.

How do I share an MP3 in Teams?
Attach it to a chat or channel message using Actions and apps → Attach file, or drag it into the compose area on desktop. For large files, share a OneDrive or SharePoint link.
Why does Teams share my screen but not audio on a Mac?
macOS may have denied Teams screen or system-audio permission, or Teams may need an audio component installed. Check System Settings → Privacy & Security and restart Teams after changing permissions.
The Bottom Line
For live playback, use Share → enable Include sound → choose the screen, window, or tab containing your audio. For an audio recording, attach the file in chat or share a cloud link. If participants hear silence, check the audio toggle first, then device permissions, speaker selection, and echo caused by another signed-in device.
