You can still find Zune Software 4.8 in Microsoft’s Update Catalog, though Zune is discontinued and no longer officially supported. For a new installation, the full offline installer is generally more practical than the old web installer, which may fail when it tries to retrieve unavailable files.
The Update Catalog listing is named Zune Software 4.8, dated April 4, 2012, and sized 186.3 MB. Microsoft announced Zune 4.8 on August 23, 2011, and it is the final official desktop release.
Where to download Zune Software 4.8
- Open the Microsoft Update Catalog search for Zune software.
- Find Zune Software 4.8 under Zune Software Updates. Check the product name and listed size before downloading.
- Select the download control beside the listing.
- If the download dialog does not open, allow pop-ups for catalog.update.microsoft.com and try again.
- Save the installer locally, then run it. If setup does not start normally, try running it as administrator.
You can also open the direct Microsoft catalog record. Microsoft’s record says the package supports all languages, requires no network connection during installation, may request a restart, and replaces Zune Software 4.7.

If an older copy of Zune opens, use its built-in updater:

Microsoft gave this update path when it announced Zune 4.8. It is useful only if the existing installation launches and its updater can reach the required service. For a fresh installation, the Update Catalog or a full offline installer is more practical.
Do not confuse the web installer with the full installer
Some legacy Zune installers are small web installers that try to download additional files during setup. Users report that setup can fail with a missing-directory error because those remote files are no longer available.
For a new installation, look for the full/offline installer. Community reports describe a usable offline package of roughly 270 MB; the smaller legacy installer is more likely to fail while retrieving missing components. Microsoft’s current Q&A guidance for Windows 11 also directs users to an offline installer, but Zune is no longer an officially supported Microsoft product.
When considering an installer hosted outside Microsoft, verify its provenance and integrity where possible. A familiar filename such as ZuneSetup.exe alone does not establish that a file is genuine.

Zune was built for older Windows versions, so Windows 11 may need optional components enabled before setup will work. Microsoft’s Q&A guidance names .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.0 and Windows Media Player as components to enable.
1. Enable .NET Framework and Windows Media Player
- Press Win + R.
- Enter optionalfeatures and press Enter. Alternatively, search Start for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable the .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.0 entries shown in Windows Features, as applicable to your Windows build.
- Enable Windows Media Player under Media Features.
- Select OK and allow Windows to install the components.
- Restart Windows before running the Zune installer.
You can also enable .NET 3.5 from an elevated PowerShell window with this reported command:

2. Run the offline installer
If setup refuses to start, right-click the full installer, choose Properties, and check the Compatibility tab. Windows 7 compatibility mode has helped some users, but it is not a guaranteed fix and should not be the first assumption when the problem is a missing package or disabled Windows feature.
Windows 11 users have reported this error:
Setup must stop because the required package ‘Zune’ didn’t install. Error code: 0x800705b3.
When this occurs, verify the optional features, restart Windows, and run the installer again. In a cited user report, restarting and rerunning the installer resolved the problem after enabling features alone had not.
If Zune installs but does not see the player
Installing the desktop program and installing the Zune device driver are separate events. A successful Zune installation does not prove that Windows can communicate with a Zune player.

- Connect the player directly to the PC with a known-good USB cable. Avoid a hub while troubleshooting.
- Open Device Manager.
- Look under Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- If the player appears under Other devices with a warning icon, right-click it and choose Update driver.
- If you have the appropriate driver package, point Windows to that package or its extracted folder rather than relying only on automatic search.
- Restart Zune Software after driver installation completes.
The Microsoft Update Catalog lists separate Zune driver packages. Newer entries are identified for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and later; the catalog shows packages of approximately 9.4 MB and 10.1 MB. Older entries are specifically for Windows Vista. For a modern Windows installation, choose a newer Windows 7/8/8.1-and-later package rather than the Vista package.
Driver installation can still fail on Windows 11, and some users report that the application installs but never recognizes the player. That may be a hardware-communication or driver problem rather than a failed Zune Software installation.
What Zune 4.8 actually is—and is not
Zune 4.8 is the final official desktop release. Microsoft’s release announcement describes progressive Windows Phone updates, streamlined backup, an option to skip phone backup when disk space was low, 22 display languages, 48-hour movie rentals, M-rated parental controls, and app-compatibility information for Windows Phone devices. Microsoft’s announcement is the source for these release features.
Those historical features do not mean Zune’s online services are still available. The Update Catalog entry may contain historical Marketplace wording, but it is an installer record, not evidence that Marketplace servers or account services continue to operate. Microsoft now describes Zune as discontinued and no longer officially supported.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In practice, treat the software as a legacy local-sync application. Its most realistic uses are managing an existing library, transferring compatible media to an old Zune player, or working with a Windows Phone device whose required services still function. Do not install it expecting a supported Microsoft Store replacement or a working modern music marketplace.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Windows 10 and Windows 11 support caveat
Zune itself is unsupported, and the host operating system matters too. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That change does not specifically disable Zune, but it makes an unsupported Windows 10 machine a poor choice for general-purpose internet use. Microsoft’s Windows updates and lifecycle information describes the support change.

If you are preserving a Zune library, a separated or minimally connected Windows installation is safer than using an unsupported computer for everyday browsing. Keep backups of the music library and avoid relying on Zune Marketplace access for anything important.

FAQ
Is Zune Software still available from Microsoft?
The old zune.net download page is not a current download route, but Microsoft still lists Zune Software 4.8 in the Update Catalog. The listing is dated April 4, 2012 and is approximately 186.3 MB.
What is the latest version of Zune Software?
Zune Software 4.8 is the final official desktop release. Microsoft announced it on August 23, 2011, and the Update Catalog record identifies it as replacing version 4.7.
Can Zune Software run on Windows 11?
It can install for some users, but Microsoft does not officially support Zune. Enabling the .NET Framework components and Windows Media Player, using a full offline installer, restarting Windows, and addressing the device driver separately can improve the chances of success.
Why does the Zune installer say the required package did not install?
Windows 11 users have reported error 0x800705b3 when the Zune package fails during setup. Enable the required Windows features, restart the computer, and run the offline installer again. Compatibility mode alone may not fix the problem.
Does installing Zune automatically install the Zune player driver?
Not reliably. The software can install while the player remains under Other devices in Device Manager. Microsoft lists Zune driver packages separately in the Update Catalog, including packages for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and later.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does Zune Marketplace still work?
The catalog description can still contain historical Marketplace wording, but that does not show that the service remains operational. Microsoft describes Zune as discontinued and unsupported, so use it primarily for local media management and device syncing.
The Bottom Line
For a Microsoft-hosted download, use the Update Catalog entry for Zune Software 4.8 and allow the catalog’s download pop-up if needed. For a new setup, prefer a full offline installer over the obsolete web installer. On Windows 11, enable the relevant .NET Framework components and Windows Media Player, restart before retrying setup, and expect to troubleshoot the Zune driver separately. Zune and its online services are no longer supported by Microsoft.
