Reddit uses flair in two different ways, and the distinction matters:
- User flair appears beside or below your username in a specific community. It can identify a role, location, team, experience level, or any other label that the moderators provide.
- Post flair is attached to a submission. It categorizes the post, such as Question, News, Discussion, or Resolved.
The controls are community-specific. A flair option may be available in one subreddit and completely absent in another because moderators decide whether flair exists, which templates are available, and whether members can select them.
How to add user flair on Reddit
User flair belongs to your membership in a particular subreddit. Choosing a flair in one community does not apply it across Reddit.
On Reddit.com
- Open the subreddit where you want to display the flair.
- Look on the right side of the community page for the USER FLAIR section.
- Click the edit icon.
- Choose a flair from the available options. If the community permits it, configure the text or emoji.
- Save or apply the selection if Reddit presents a confirmation button.
Your selected label should then appear with your username in that community. If there is no USER FLAIR section or edit control, moderators—not members—control user flair. Contact the moderators if you need a particular label.

On the Reddit iOS or Android app
- Open the subreddit.
- Tap the overflow menu in the upper-right corner. This is the three-dot menu.
- Select Change user flair.
- Choose a flair.
- Tap APPLY.
If the community does not offer member-selectable flair, the app shows No user flair assigned. That does not indicate a problem with your account; it means the community has not made a selectable option available.
On Old Reddit
- Open the subreddit.
- In the right-hand sidebar, below the reader count, find Show my flair on this subreddit.
- Click edit next to it.
- Choose the available flair and save it.
No edit link means that moderators control the flair.
How moderators set up user flair
You need the Manage flair permission to configure user flair. On the current Reddit website, open:
Mod tools → Settings → Look and Feel → User flair

Create a user-flair template
- On the User flair settings page, click Create in the upper-right corner.
- Enter the Flair text.
- Add emojis if appropriate.
- Choose a Background color and Text color.
- Decide whether to enable For mods only.
- Use Allow user to edit if members should be able to change the text, emojis, or both.
- Save the template.
For mods only prevents ordinary members from editing the flair, even after it has been assigned to them. Allow user to edit is more specific: it controls whether the member can modify the text and emojis, and you can configure limits on emoji use.
Reddit allows up to 350 custom user-flair templates in a community. To change one, hover over it and click the edit icon. To remove one, hover over it and click the trash-can icon.

User-flair background colors display on Reddit.com but do not display in the Reddit mobile app.
Assign user flair to a particular member
To assign a label yourself as a moderator, go to:
Mod tools → Settings → Look and Feel → User Flair → Assign
Search for the exact username, select an existing template, and customize the text if needed. You can also assign text without using a template. Another shortcut is to hover over a member’s username and select Edit user flair.
How to add post flair
Post flair labels a submission rather than a person. Clicking a post-flair label in a listing opens search results containing other posts with the same label, which makes it useful for browsing and filtering a busy subreddit.
Whether you can apply post flair depends on the community’s settings. A moderator may allow members to choose from a list, assign flair after reviewing a post, or reserve certain labels for moderators.

Reddit’s exact button placement can vary by interface. Open the post’s options and look for an action such as Add post flair or Change post flair. Select an available label and apply it.
If you cannot find that option, the community may not use post flair, may not allow members to assign it, or may expect moderators to add it. Some communities also require flair only when posting from desktop; Reddit’s current post-flair requirement is not available on mobile.

Applying post flair as a moderator
On Reddit.com:
- Open the post.
- Click the mod shield icon beneath it.
- Select Add/Change post flair.
- Choose the label.
- Click Apply.
In the mobile moderator interface, tap the mod shield, tap Select post flair, choose a label, and tap Apply. If mod mode is enabled, Reddit says to use the flair/tag icon to apply post flair.
How moderators set up post flair
Moderators with the Manage flair permission can open:

On mobile, the settings path is Mod tools → Settings → Post flair.
Enable Enable post flair to turn on the feature. Enable Let users assign and edit if members should be able to choose and modify post flair. The Flair display control lets you reorder the list shown to users.

- Open the community’s Post flair settings.
- Click New Flair in the upper-right corner.
- Configure the label and any available appearance or permission settings.
- Save the template.
To edit a template, hover over it and click the edit icon. To delete it, hover over it and click the trash icon. A community can have up to 350 custom post-flair templates.
The Use post flair as navigation option adds a horizontal flair menu below the community information. Reddit sorts those navigation labels by how often they are used, and posts within a selected flair are sorted newest first.

Post-flair requirements and common mistakes
Moderators can configure a post-flair requirement in the desktop Post & Comments settings, but the requirement works only when usable templates exist and members are allowed to assign them.

A frequent setup error is enabling a flair requirement before creating templates. Another is creating templates but leaving Let users assign and edit disabled. In either case, members have no usable self-assignment choices.
A Mod only post-flair template cannot be edited by the member who receives it. If members can assign their own flair, they may still be able to remove a mod-only post flair from their post, but they cannot change the contents of that label.

What “link flair” means on Old Reddit
Old Reddit uses link flair templates as its term for post flair. The setup path is:
Community sidebar → edit flair under Moderation Tools → link flair templates
For user flair, use:
Community sidebar → edit flair under Moderation Tools → user flair templates
Simple text flair does not require a CSS class. Leave the CSS class field blank unless you are implementing advanced custom styling. The idea that every flair needs a CSS class is outdated.

Why the flair option is missing
- The community does not use flair: Moderators may have disabled the system completely.
- Members cannot choose user flair: The community may assign it manually or not offer it at all.
- You are looking in the wrong community: Flair is configured separately for each subreddit.
- You are using the app: User-flair backgrounds are not shown on mobile, and post-flair requirements are not available there.
- The post has a moderator-only label: You may see the label but cannot edit it.
- The community has templates but self-assignment is disabled: A moderator must apply the flair.
There is no command-line or command syntax for Reddit flair. The available workflows use Reddit’s website, Old Reddit, or the iOS and Android interfaces.

What is flair on Reddit?

Why can’t I see the Change user flair option?
