Hold F3, press F4 repeatedly until the mode you want is highlighted, then release F3. The switcher supports Survival, Creative, Adventure, and Spectator.
This shortcut still requires permission to change gamemode. It does not bypass cheats in single-player or operator permissions on a server.
How to change gamemode with F3 + F4
- Load your Minecraft Java world.
- Hold down F3.
- While holding F3, press F4 repeatedly. Each press moves the selection to the next gamemode.
- Stop when the desired mode is highlighted.
- Release F3 to apply the selected gamemode.
You do not need to open chat or type a command. The available choices are:

If cheats are disabled in your single-player world
An existing Java world with cheats disabled will not let you use the switcher until you temporarily enable the required authority through the pause menu. Use this exact route:
- Press Esc.
- Select Open to LAN.
- Set Allow Cheats to ON.
- Click Start LAN World.
- Return to the game and use F3 + F4.
The current Open to LAN screen also includes a Game Mode control, an Allow Cheats control, a port control, and the Start LAN World button. You can leave the game mode as it is if you only want to authorize the switcher.
Allowing cheats this way is temporary. After you save and quit, a world that was originally created with cheats disabled will normally require the same Esc → Open to LAN → Allow Cheats: ON → Start LAN World process the next time you open it.
Does F3 + F4 work without cheats?
No. F3 + F4 is a quicker interface for an authorized gamemode change; it is not a cheat or permission bypass.

- In single-player, cheats must be enabled, either when the world was created or temporarily through Open to LAN.
- On a multiplayer server, you need the operator level or permissions configured by that server.
- On a dedicated server, Open to LAN is not the solution because it applies to single-player worlds. Ask an administrator for the required permission or use the server’s permissions system.
If the switcher appears but the change does not apply, the likely cause is insufficient permission rather than an incorrect key combination.
Alternative: use the gamemode command
The keyboard switcher avoids typing, but the command remains useful when changing another player’s mode or when the shortcut is unavailable:
/gamemode <gamemode> [<target>]Examples:

/gamemode spectator
/gamemode creative PlayerNameJava also accepts common short aliases such as c, s, a, and sp. Commands require cheats or the appropriate server permission.
F3 or F4 does not work on a laptop
Some laptops assign F3 and F4 to brightness, volume, display, or other hardware functions. Try one of these combinations:

- Fn + F3, then Fn + F4
- Hold Fn while using the shortcut
- Enable or disable Fn Lock, then retry
The exact behavior depends on the laptop keyboard. This is a function-key layout issue, not a Minecraft gamemode setting.
Stay safe when switching modes
Move out of blocks before leaving Spectator
Spectator mode lets you pass through terrain. If you switch to Survival or Creative while your camera is inside solid blocks, your new player position may be invalid or dangerous. Move into open air first.
Land before switching to Survival
Creative and Spectator players can remain airborne, but Survival players cannot. If you switch while high above the ground, you can take fall damage or die. Land on a safe surface before changing to Survival.
Recent Java Edition behavior
The Game Mode Switcher is a Java Edition feature. Java Edition 1.21.9 included fixes related to F3 + F4’s visual switcher and gamemode transitions. It also fixed a debug-screen issue where pressing F3 after using the switcher could require an extra key press.

If the debug screen behaves strangely after changing modes, update Java Edition to a current release and try the shortcut again.
What if there is no gamemode button in the pause menu?
That is normal. Java Edition does not provide an ordinary pause-menu button for changing your own gamemode in an already-running single-player world. The relevant pause-menu route is Open to LAN, which temporarily enables the authority needed to use F3 + F4.
Do not confuse this with the Game Mode setting on the Open to LAN screen. That setting controls the mode used for the LAN session; the F3 + F4 switcher is what lets you change modes while playing, once you have the necessary permission.

Java also has a LAN-publishing command:
/publish [allowCommands] [gamemode] [port]This syntax was expanded with the Open to LAN changes in snapshot 22w45a. It is not needed for the no-command method described above, and using it still requires the authority to run commands.

Can I change gamemode in Minecraft Java without typing a command?
Yes. Hold F3, press F4 repeatedly to highlight Survival, Creative, Adventure, or Spectator, then release F3. You still need cheats or the appropriate server permission.
Why does F3 + F4 not work in my single-player world?
Your world probably has cheats disabled. Press Esc, choose Open to LAN, set Allow Cheats to ON, select Start LAN World, and then use F3 + F4.
Does enabling Allow Cheats through Open to LAN permanently enable cheats?
No. It applies to the current play session. After quitting, you will normally need to repeat Open to LAN and enable Allow Cheats again if the world was originally created with cheats disabled.
Can I use F3 + F4 on a Minecraft server?
Only if your account has the required operator or permissions-plugin permission. The shortcut cannot override a server’s permission system.

The shortcut is convenient, but it never replaces the permissions required by Minecraft or a multiplayer server.
