Yes—if the phone has a built-in Qi wireless-charging receiver, it can usually charge on a Qi-certified wireless pad. The phone does not need to be made by the same company as the charger. An iPhone can use a Samsung-branded Qi pad, and a compatible Samsung phone can use a third-party Qi charger.
The difficult part is identifying the exact phone model. Wireless charging is not included on every iPhone, every Galaxy, or every Android phone. A charger’s label also does not guarantee its advertised speed: the phone, charger, power adapter, alignment, case, temperature, and charging protocol all matter.
Quick compatibility answer
| Phone or standard | Wireless-charging answer |
|---|---|
| iPhone 8 or later | Compatible with Qi-certified chargers. Standard Qi charging is typically up to 7.5 W, although performance varies by model and charger, according to Apple. |
| Samsung Galaxy S, Note, Fold, or Flip models listed below | Compatible with wireless charging. Charging speed varies by model. |
| Samsung Galaxy A, XCover, or Tab | Not compatible with built-in wireless charging, according to Samsung’s compatibility list. |
| Qi2 phone | Designed to work with Qi2 and Qi chargers, subject to the phone and charger’s individual limitations; some older Qi transmitters may not work reliably. |
| Qi2-Ready phone | Supports the relevant Qi2 charging capability but needs a compatible magnetic case for magnetic attachment. |
| Phone with no Qi receiver | A normal wireless pad will not charge it. A third-party receiver may be possible, but it is not the same as built-in compatibility. |
iPhone wireless-charging compatibility
iPhone 8 and every later iPhone support wireless charging. Apple says these models work with Qi-certified chargers. Place the charger on a level surface, connect it to power, and put the iPhone on it with the display facing up and the phone centered. A charging icon should appear within a few seconds.
| iPhone generation | Qi wireless charging | Magnetic charging note |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X | Yes | Qi charging, but no built-in MagSafe magnetic array. |
| iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR | Yes | Qi charging, but no built-in MagSafe magnetic array. |
| iPhone 11 series | Yes | Qi charging, but no built-in MagSafe magnetic array. |
| iPhone SE, 2nd and 3rd generation | Yes | Qi charging, but no built-in MagSafe magnetic array. |
| iPhone 12 and later | Yes | These generations support Apple’s magnetic charging system. The dossier’s Qi2-certified list includes iPhone 12 through iPhone 16 series; do not assume every later iPhone is Qi2-certified without checking its certification. |
For ordinary Qi charging, Apple documents charging of up to 7.5 W with many Qi-certified chargers. A pad marked “15 W” does not force an iPhone to accept 15 W.

Samsung Galaxy compatibility list
Samsung’s current support information excludes the Galaxy A series, Galaxy XCover series, and Galaxy Tab series from wireless charging. Do not assume that a Galaxy phone supports it just because it is a Samsung device.

Qi, Qi2, and MagSafe: what the labels mean
Qi
Qi is the baseline wireless-charging standard used by many phones and chargers. A phone with a built-in Qi receiver can generally charge on a Qi-certified pad, whether the pad is branded for Apple, Samsung, Google, or another manufacturer.
Compatibility does not mean maximum speed. For example, a phone may accept only 7.5 W while the charger is advertised as 15 W or 25 W.

Qi2 is a newer Wireless Power Consortium standard that adds magnetic alignment through the Magnetic Power Profile. Qi2 chargers can charge older Qi phones, generally at the older phone’s supported rate. Qi2 phones are designed for Qi and Qi2 charging, but compatibility with some older transmitters is not guaranteed in practice.

Qi2-Ready phones
A Qi2-Ready phone supports the relevant Qi2 charging capability but does not contain the phone-side magnetic array. A compatible magnetic case is required if you want the phone to attach to a magnetic Qi2 charger.
The following Samsung models are listed as Qi2-Ready:
- Galaxy S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, and S25 Edge
- Galaxy Z Fold7
- Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE
A phone sticking to a magnetic charger does not, by itself, prove that it is Qi2-certified. The magnet may be in the case, or the accessory may use a different magnetic arrangement.

MagSafe
MagSafe is Apple’s branded magnetic charging and accessory system. A non-iPhone may receive Qi power from some MagSafe-branded chargers, but magnetic attachment and full MagSafe charging performance are not guaranteed. For an Android phone, look for explicit Qi or Qi2 support rather than treating “MagSafe” as a universal compatibility label.
How to check an unknown phone
- Find the exact model in Settings > About phone. The commercial name alone may be ambiguous—for example, “Galaxy S” does not identify the generation.
- Look in the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for the terms wireless charging, Qi, or Qi2. “Fast charging” by itself usually refers to wired charging.
- Search the model in the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi Certified Product Database. A product marked “Qi-compatible” is not necessarily certified; the WPC database and certified WPC ID are the definitive checks for certification.
- Remove the case and place the phone on a known-good Qi-certified pad. A failed test with a thick, metal, or battery case does not prove that the phone lacks wireless charging.
How to place the phone correctly
iPhone
- Connect the wireless charger to power.
- Put the charger on a level surface.
- Place the iPhone with the display facing up.
- Center the phone over the charging area.
- Wait a few seconds for the charging icon.
Phone coils are not in exactly the same place on every model. If the phone shifts because of a notification or vibration, it can move out of alignment and stop charging.
Samsung phone
- Disconnect other chargers or USB cables from the phone.
- Place the phone’s back against the charging pad.
- Center it carefully over the transmitter.
- For a foldable, close the phone before placing it on the charger.
A flashing red indicator on a Samsung charger means the phone is not charging correctly, commonly because of its position. Move it a few millimeters and test again.
Using Samsung Wireless PowerShare
Wireless PowerShare lets a compatible Samsung phone act as a charging pad for another compatible phone or accessory. It is useful in an emergency, but it is slower and more sensitive to alignment than a dedicated charger.
- Make sure the sharing Galaxy phone has at least 30% battery, as Samsung requires.
- Open the Quick settings panel.
- Tap Wireless PowerShare.
- Place the two devices back-to-back.
- Separate them when you want to stop charging.
On One UI 7.0 and later, swipe down from the top right to open Quick settings; notifications open from the top left. On One UI 6.1.1 and earlier, swipe down with two fingers to fully expand the Quick panel.

If Wireless PowerShare is missing, open the Quick panel, tap the pencil-shaped Edit icon, tap Edit again, move Wireless PowerShare into the panel, and tap Done. On One UI 7, you can combine notifications and Quick settings through Quick panel > Edit > Panel settings > Together > Back.
Samsung says PowerShare stops automatically after 60 seconds if it detects no other device, and it stops when the sharing phone reaches a device-defined low-battery level. Covers, movement, poor alignment, wired earphones, charger type, network conditions, and temperature can make it slow or unstable. Wired earphones may require the receiving phone to be positioned in landscape.
Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra are specifically not compatible with Wireless PowerShare, even though other Galaxy Watch generations appear in Samsung’s compatible-device list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a compatible phone may not charge
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Thick, metal, or battery case | Remove the case and test again. These cases can block charging or reduce speed. |
| Cards or objects under the phone | Remove cards, RFID items, security badges, passports, key fobs, and magnetic mounts. They can interfere with charging or be damaged. |
| Phone is off-center | Reposition it slowly. Coil locations differ between phone models. |
| Phone is hot | Let it cool. Apple says iPhone software may limit charging above 80% when the battery becomes too warm, then resume after the temperature falls. |
| iPhone is connected by USB | Disconnect the computer or USB power adapter. iPhone charges through USB instead of wirelessly when a USB connection is active. |
| Samsung phone has another charger connected | Disconnect the other charger or USB cable. Samsung says wireless charging may be unavailable in this situation. |
| PowerShare will not start | Confirm the sharing phone has at least 30%, enable Wireless PowerShare, close a foldable, and remove cases while testing. |
Choosing the right wireless charger
- Confirm the phone standard first. Buy a Qi-certified charger for ordinary Qi charging; choose Qi2 if you need magnetic alignment and the phone supports it or can use a compatible magnetic case.
- Check the power adapter. The charging pad cannot deliver its advertised rate if the wall adapter or cable cannot supply the required power.
- Do not buy by wattage alone. A 15 W or 25 W label describes the charger’s capability, not necessarily the phone’s input. Apple, Samsung, and Qi2 devices each have model-specific limits.
- Use magnetic alignment only when it is genuinely supported. A Qi2-Ready Samsung phone needs a compatible magnetic case; a normal Qi phone may charge on a magnetic pad without attaching securely.
- Prefer certification you can verify. Check the Wireless Power Consortium database rather than relying only on a retailer’s “Qi-compatible” wording.

Can a Qi2 charger charge an older Qi phone?
Usually yes, but the phone normally charges at its own older Qi-supported rate. Compatibility with every older Qi transmitter is not guaranteed in practice.
Does a phone need MagSafe to use a wireless charger?
No. MagSafe is not required for ordinary wireless charging. A phone with Qi support can use a Qi pad. Magnetic attachment and full MagSafe behavior require the appropriate Apple or Qi2 hardware and accessories.
Why does my phone charge wirelessly without sticking to the charger?
It may support ordinary Qi charging but lack a magnetic alignment system. A Qi2-Ready phone also needs a compatible magnetic case for attachment.
Why does my wireless charger show that a compatible phone is not charging?
Remove the case and any cards or metal objects, center the phone, disconnect USB accessories, and let the phone cool. On Samsung devices, a flashing red indicator usually means the phone is positioned incorrectly.
