There are several places where an HP print job can be stopped: the printer itself, the app that sent it, or the computer or phone holding the queue. If the printer is already producing pages, start at the printer’s control panel. If more documents are waiting, cancel them from the device that submitted them.
Use the method that matches where the job is currently waiting. A printer-side cancellation usually stops only the job being processed; it does not necessarily clear the rest of the queue on your PC or mobile device.
1. Cancel the job from the HP printer’s control panel
This is the quickest option when the HP printer is actively printing.
- Printers with physical buttons: press Cancel.
- Touchscreen printers: tap X, Stop, or Cancel.
Some older HP LaserJet models display an additional confirmation screen. On an HP Color LaserJet CP3525, for example, press Stop, highlight CANCEL CURRENT JOB, and press OK.

HP Color LaserJet Pro 4200 series with a dial control panel
On the HP Color LaserJet Pro 4201, 4202, and 4203, use the dial rather than a touchscreen:
- Press and hold the dial until the options menu appears.
- Make sure Status is selected, then press the dial.
- Select the print job and press the dial.
- Select Cancel, then press the dial again.
The display shows Canceling while the printer processes the request.
Limitation: the printer’s Cancel control normally affects only the job currently being processed. Other documents can remain in the Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS queue. Also, a job that has already been transferred deep into the printer’s processing cycle may continue for a short time.
2. Cancel it from the application’s print dialog
Some programs show a temporary print-progress window immediately after you select Print. If that window is still open:
- Find the print-progress dialog for the HP printer.
- Click or tap Cancel.
This works best when you act before the document has finished transferring to the printer. The wording and location vary by application, and the dialog may disappear once the job has been submitted.

For multiple pending documents, use the operating system’s printer queue instead. The application dialog generally controls only the submission currently being handled by that program.
3. Cancel a print job from the Windows queue
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select your HP printer.
- Select Open print queue.
- Right-click the unwanted document.
- Select Cancel.
If an HP printer icon is visible in the Windows notification area, double-clicking it can also open the queue.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Select Open queue.
- Right-click the document and choose Cancel.
The older route, Control Panel → Devices and Printers → See what’s printing, may still be available, but the Settings path is the current Windows 11 route.
If the Windows job stays on “Deleting”
A stuck Windows Print Spooler can keep a canceled document visible and prevent new jobs from printing.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter services.msc and press Enter.
- Right-click Print Spooler.
- Select Restart.
If restarting the service does not clear the queue, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run these commands separately:

net stop spooler
del %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\* /Q
net start spooler
This removes every queued print job stored in that Windows spool folder, not just the document you intended to cancel. Any documents still needed must be printed again.
4. Cancel it from macOS Print Center
- Open System Settings.
- Select Printers & Scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Select Printer Queue.
- Select the print job.
- Click Delete Job.
When a document is actively printing, you can also click the Print Center icon in the Dock. To open it manually, go to Applications → Utilities → Print Center.

It is easy to send a document to a different saved printer by mistake. On a shared printer, you may not have permission to delete another user’s job.
A paused printer or a failed document can block everything behind it. Delete the blocking job and select Resume if macOS has paused the printer.
5. Cancel it from the phone or tablet that sent the job
For mobile printing, cancel the job on the same device that submitted it.

Android
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open notifications.
- Tap the active print-job notification.
- Tap Cancel.
The notification’s appearance varies between Android versions and phone manufacturers, but the Android print notification is where the active job is managed.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Switcher. On a device with a Home button, press the Home button twice. On a device without one, swipe up from the bottom and pause.
- Swipe left if necessary and select Print Center.
- Select the print job.
- Tap Cancel Printing.
Print Center appears in the App Switcher only while the iPhone or iPad is actively processing a print job. If it is no longer visible, the job may already have been submitted or completed.
What to do when canceling does not work
| What you see | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The printer keeps printing | The job has already reached the printer’s processing stage. | Wait briefly, then cancel the same job in the sending device’s queue. |
| The printer says “Canceling” | The printer is still processing the cancellation request. | Give it time; do not repeatedly submit the document. |
| The PC still shows the job | The Windows queue or Print Spooler is stuck. | Restart Print Spooler, then clear the spool folder if required. |
| The job is missing on the Mac | It may belong to another printer queue or another user. | Check every queue in Print Center and verify your permissions. |
| Turning off the printer changes nothing | The sending computer or phone still holds the job. | Cancel it on that device rather than relying on a power cycle. |
Cancel versus delete on HP printer queues
These terms can have different effects on HP models with a built-in job queue. Cancel stops a job, while Delete may remove its record from the queue or history. If a job is currently printing, cancel it first. A Delete option may appear only after the printer has stopped processing the document.
Which method should you use?
- Use the printer control panel for the page currently coming out.
- Use the application dialog if it is still open immediately after pressing Print.
- Use the Windows queue or macOS Print Center to remove pending documents.
- Use the Android notification or iPhone/iPad Print Center for a mobile-submitted job.
For a completely clear queue, cancel the active job at the printer and then check the device that sent it. That two-step approach prevents a later document from starting after the first one has been stopped.

Why does my HP printer keep printing after I press Cancel?
The job may already be too far into the printer’s processing cycle to stop immediately. Wait for the printer to finish processing the cancellation, then remove the same job from the Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS queue that sent it.

Does canceling a job on the HP printer clear the computer queue?
Usually, no. The printer control panel generally stops only the job currently being processed. Other documents can remain queued on the computer or mobile device.
How do I cancel all stuck print jobs in Windows?
Restart Print Spooler from services.msc. If that fails, open Command Prompt as administrator and run net stop spooler, del %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\* /Q, and net start spooler. This removes all locally queued Windows print jobs.
Where is Print Center on an iPhone or iPad?
Open the App Switcher while a print job is active, swipe to Print Center, select the job, and tap Cancel Printing. Print Center appears there only while the device is processing a print job.
Can I cancel another person’s job on a shared HP printer?
Not always. macOS, for example, may prevent you from deleting another user’s job. Access depends on the printer’s queue permissions and how the shared printer is configured.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Bottom Line
To stop the page currently printing, press Cancel on the HP printer. To prevent later documents from printing, also clear the queue on the computer or mobile device that sent the job. If Windows remains stuck on “Deleting,” restart Print Spooler before resorting to the administrator command sequence.
