1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows 11 does not have a universal setting that disables battery charging while a laptop is plugged in. Charging is controlled mainly by the laptop’s battery hardware, firmware, and manufacturer software—not by a standard Windows power plan.
You can check the Windows charging status at Settings > System > Power & battery. If Smart charging is active, Windows may show a heart on the taskbar battery icon or the message Fully Smart charged. The laptop remains connected to AC power, but the battery is intentionally not charging.
To set a charge ceiling or stop charging at a particular percentage, use the control supplied by your laptop manufacturer. Microsoft Surface devices have additional controls in the Surface app and, on supported models, in UEFI.
What Windows 11 can—and cannot—do
Windows 11 has no model-independent Disable battery charging switch. Microsoft’s Smart charging feature is implemented differently by each device manufacturer, so Microsoft directs users to the laptop maker’s support software or firmware settings.

| What you want to do | Correct place to look |
|---|---|
| See whether Windows is limiting charging | Settings > System > Power & battery |
| Set an 80% or similar battery limit | Your laptop manufacturer’s utility or UEFI/BIOS |
| Temporarily charge a protected battery to 100% | The manufacturer’s battery-care utility; on Surface, the Surface app |
| Reduce power consumption while unplugged | Battery Saver or Windows power settings |
Check Smart charging in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Look at the battery status and charging information.
When Smart charging is active, the taskbar battery icon may contain a heart. Hover over the icon to see Fully Smart charged. This means the computer is still plugged in and operating from AC power, while charging has been paused to reduce battery wear.
The exact status and controls vary by device. If Settings only displays the status and does not offer a charging control, that is expected; Windows does not add a universal override.
Do not use Battery Saver as a charging limit
Battery Saver reduces power consumption when the computer is running on battery. It can restrict background activity, notifications, and other power use, but it does not tell the charger to stop at 80%, 50%, or another percentage.
Similarly, changing Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode, selecting a different Windows power plan, or running powercfg will not provide a universal battery-charge cutoff.
Microsoft Surface: temporarily charge to 100%
Surface uses Smart charging automatically. When it is active, the battery may be held below 100%, commonly at about 80%. To temporarily allow a full charge:

- Open the Surface app from the Start menu.
- Select Battery & charging.
- Under Smart charging, select Charge to 100%.
This pauses Smart charging and permits normal charging until Surface turns the protection back on. Depending on the model, the app may also let you pause Smart charging for a selected period.
This does not cut power to the laptop. It only permits the battery to charge normally instead of stopping below full capacity.
Surface: keep charging below 80%
On supported Surface models, you can select an 80% ceiling:
- Open the Surface app.
- Go to Battery & charging.
- Under Charging mode, select Limit to 80%.
The limit remains active until you select Adaptive or Charge to 100%. Not every Surface device supports this option.
Surface Smart charging itself is automatic rather than a permanent disable switch. It can activate after the device has been connected to power for a long time or when it is operating at elevated temperatures. It may pause automatically when the battery falls below 20% or the device is being used frequently, allowing charging to 100% when needed.
Surface: use UEFI Battery Limit mode
If you need a persistent limit for a Surface that stays connected to power—for example, a kiosk or point-of-sale system—use the firmware setting where supported.

- Shut down or restart the Surface.
- Turn it on while holding Power + Volume Up to enter Surface UEFI.
- Select Boot configuration > Advanced Options.
- Set Enable Battery Limit to On.
On Surface Go models, use Boot configuration > Kiosk Mode, then move the Battery Limit slider to Enabled.
This mode stops charging at 50%, not 80% or 100%. If you enable it while the battery is above 50%, charging does not resume until the battery drops below 50%.
Microsoft documents built-in UEFI Battery Limit support for Surface Go models, Surface Pro 7 and later, Surface Laptop 3 and later, Surface Book 3, all Surface Laptop Studio generations, all Surface Laptop Go generations, and Surface Laptop SE. Some older models need particular firmware updates.
Other Windows 11 laptops: use the manufacturer’s control
On a non-Surface laptop, search the Start menu for the maker’s support utility or check UEFI/BIOS settings. Depending on the brand and model, the feature may be called:
- Charging limit
- Battery conservation mode
- Battery health mode
- Battery-care mode
- Smart charging
- Primarily AC use
There is no safe universal path because the implementation differs by manufacturer and model. Check the laptop maker’s support page using the exact model number, not just the brand name. A manufacturer utility may expose the setting in Windows, while another model may place it in firmware.
A firmware-controlled limit can remain active even if Windows is shut down and the manufacturer utility is uninstalled. Removing the utility or changing a Windows power plan is therefore not guaranteed to remove the limit.

“Plugged in but not charging” may indicate a fault
A battery that stops at 50% or 80% may be following a deliberate health setting. However, plugged in but not charging is not automatically evidence of a charge-limit feature.
Microsoft lists these common causes:
- An incompatible charger
- A charger with insufficient wattage
- The charger connected to the wrong port
- An inadequate USB-C cable
- Heavy laptop use that consumes more power than the charger supplies
USB-C does not automatically mean that a laptop is receiving enough power. Basic USB-C can provide up to 5 V at 3 A, or 15 W, while USB Power Delivery can provide substantially more. A laptop that requires 12 V at 3 A will not charge properly from a 5 V, 3 A source.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to rely on
- Advanced power settings: current Windows documentation does not provide a universal Battery Charge Limit entry there.
- Battery Saver: controls runtime power consumption, not the battery’s charging cutoff.
- Registry edits: there is no Microsoft-documented Registry value that universally disables charging.
powercfg: it manages Windows power behavior, not the charging controller’s hardware limit.- Uninstalling the OEM app: a setting already stored in firmware may continue to apply.
FAQ
Can I disable battery charging from Windows 11 Settings?
No. Windows 11 has no universal switch for disabling charging. Open Settings > System > Power & battery to view Smart charging status, then use your laptop manufacturer’s software or UEFI/BIOS for a charge limit.
Does “Fully Smart charged” mean my laptop is disconnected from power?
No. It means the laptop remains plugged in and can run from AC power, but Smart charging has paused battery charging below 100% to reduce battery wear.
How do I make a Surface charge to 100%?
Open the Surface app, select Battery & charging, and choose Charge to 100% under Smart charging. This temporarily pauses Smart charging.

Can I permanently set a Surface battery limit?
On supported models, enter Surface UEFI with Power + Volume Up, then select Boot configuration > Advanced Options and enable Enable Battery Limit. Surface Go models use Boot configuration > Kiosk Mode. This firmware mode stops charging at 50%.
Will Battery Saver stop my laptop from charging?
No. Battery Saver reduces power consumption while running on battery. It is not a charging cutoff or battery-health limit.
Why does my laptop say plugged in but not charging?
It may be using an intentional charge limit, but it can also have an incompatible or underpowered charger, an inadequate USB-C cable, a wrong charging port, or a battery or hardware problem.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal Windows 11 method to disable battery charging while plugged in. Check Settings > System > Power & battery for Smart charging status, then use the exact laptop manufacturer’s battery-care utility or UEFI setting. On supported Surface devices, use the Surface app for Charge to 100% or Limit to 80%; use UEFI Battery Limit mode when a persistent 50% ceiling is appropriate.
