This does not prove that every copy of the software is malware. It does mean that the popup should not be treated as an authenticated HP update notice. The evidence available from HP Community identifies the application as third-party, and one accepted resolution stopped the messages by uninstalling it rather than updating it.
What to do first
- Do not click the link. Do not copy it into another browser, download its installer, or enter information into a page it opens.
- Close the popup. If it will not close normally, press Alt+F4. Avoid clicking buttons inside the message if you cannot tell which one dismisses it.
- Do not search for a random replacement installer. There is no verified current HP package version or official command-line installer identified for this alert.

Remove HP Display Control

Windows 11
- Open Settings from the Start menu, or press Windows+I.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Use the search box and enter HP Display Control.
- Open the three-dot menu beside the result and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstaller, then restart the computer.
Windows 10 or the traditional Control Panel
- Press the Windows key and type HP Display Control.
- If an app result appears, right-click it and choose Uninstall, where available.
- Alternatively, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select HP Display Control, choose Uninstall, and restart.
Look for a separate associated app or component as well. In the accepted HP resolution, support removed both the installed HP Display Control program and the associated application. If more than one entry clearly uses that name, record the names before removing them and uninstall the related entries.
Check every Windows user profile
One affected user reported that the removal had to be performed for each Windows user profile on the computer. If the popup returns only after another person signs in, check that account’s Installed apps or Programs and Features list too. Restart after removing the program from the relevant profiles.

Do not remove unrelated HP software merely because it contains “HP” in its name. In particular, do not uninstall graphics, chipset, audio, or display drivers unless you have a separate reason and a known recovery plan.
Update through official Windows and HP channels
After removing the alerting program, update the computer normally:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install updates Windows offers and restart when prompted. Repeat the check after the restart if Windows requests it.
- If you use HP Support Assistant, open it from the Start menu and use its update-checking feature. Install only updates presented inside the official application, then restart if requested.
These Windows Update and HP Support Assistant steps were recommended in an archived HP discussion in March 2020. The discussion itself warns that archived information and links may no longer be relevant. If the popup has already caused display problems
Users reported symptoms including a black or greenish-black screen and, in one case, a missing taskbar. Those reports were from January 2020 and do not establish that this popup currently causes those symptoms. Treat a blank display as a separate troubleshooting problem if it continues after the message is removed.
- Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the Windows graphics driver. You may hear a beep or see the screen briefly refresh.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. If the security screen appears, open Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer if it is listed.
- Restart the computer.
- If the display remains unusable, connect an external display where possible or start Windows in Safe Mode and remove the suspicious application from there.
If the computer becomes unusable, repeatedly interrupt startup to enter Windows Recovery, then select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, and choose Safe Mode. Menu names can vary by Windows version.

When to get further help

Will Windows Update or HP Support Assistant install the missing service?
