Google Maps can show older Street View captures for some places, letting you compare a property, road, construction site, or neighbourhood with how it looked in the past. The feature is built into Street View and is labelled See more dates.
It is not available everywhere, and Google does not provide a calendar of every year. You can choose only from the dates shown for the particular Street View position you opened.
How to view historical Google Maps images on a computer
The quickest method is to search for the address first, then open its Street View image.
- Open Google Maps in a desktop browser.
- Search for an address or place.
- Select the Street View thumbnail in the place panel. It has the Street View icon.
- When Street View opens, select See more dates.
- Scroll through the thumbnail gallery at the bottom of the screen.
- Select an older thumbnail to load that capture.
The selected image replaces the current view. The date shown with the thumbnail identifies when that imagery was captured or made available in the gallery. To leave Street View on desktop, click Back at the top left.

Use Pegman if the search result does not open Street View
You can also enter Street View manually:
- Open Google Maps and find the area you want to inspect.
- Click the yellow Pegman figure in the bottom-right corner.
- Drag Pegman onto the target road or property.
- Release it on a blue line, blue dot, or orange dot.
- In Street View, click See more dates.
- Choose an older image from the thumbnail strip.
Blue lines indicate Street View coverage. They do not, by themselves, prove that older imagery exists. The historical gallery appears only when Google has dates available for the specific position.

Why you cannot see the year you want
Historical Street View is not a complete archive of every annual visit. Google displays the imagery it has made available for that precise location. You cannot enter an arbitrary year or unlock an unlisted capture through a Google Maps setting.
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Blue line, but no See more dates | Street View exists there, but Google may not expose historical imagery for that position. |
| Only one or two dates | Those are the dates currently available in Google’s gallery; coverage is not guaranteed for every year. |
| Dates on one part of a road but not another | Historical coverage can vary between nearby Street View positions or road segments. |
| Current imagery looks old | Google may not have a newer capture available. You can report outdated imagery, but Google does not promise a particular update date. |
What to try when “See more dates” is missing
- Enter Street View properly. A dropped pin alone is not the historical viewer. Select the Street View thumbnail, or open Street View by placing Pegman on a supported line or dot.
- Try a nearby position. Move along the blue line and check another Street View position. The historical option may be available on one segment and absent on the next.
- Search the exact building or road. A broad place result can open a different viewpoint from the one you need. Open Street View as close as possible to the target.
- Check both the app and desktop site. The feature is supported on current Android and iPhone/iPad apps as well as desktop Maps, although the controls are placed differently.
- Accept the available set. If the desired date is not listed after checking the correct position, Google does not provide a control to add it.
Historical Street View versus Photo Paths
Google’s historical Street View gallery should not be confused with Photo Paths. Historical Street View lets you switch between imagery available for a Street View location. Google says Photo Paths are no longer a supported feature and that new Photo Paths cannot be published to Google Maps.

- 【PREPARE YOUR IPAD BEFORE USE】Before using our iPad pen, ensure the "Only Draw with Apple Pencil" feature is off in Settings > Apple Pencil. Disabling this option is crucial for proper stylus functionality.
- 【UNIVERSAL STYLUS】Our stylus pens for touch screens are widely compatible with all touch screens including smartphones, Android tablets, touch screen laptops/PCs. They also work with Apple iPads, iPhones, iPad Pro, iPad Mini, iPad Air, Surface, Chromebooks and other capacitive touch screen devices.
- 【2-in-1 DESIGN】The stylus pen comes with different tips on both ends. One end is the disc tip, which is more accurate and sensitive, suitable for taking notes and drawing. The other end is a durable fibre tip for browsing or scrolling web pages, effectively protecting the screen from fingerprints or smudges.
- 【HIDDEN SPARE TIP】This 3 pack of stylus pens includes 3 additional disc tips and 3 extra fibre tips. Each disc tip is placed inside the stylus body. The spare tip can be taken out by simply rotating the fibre tip end. Convenient for always having a spare pen tip ready to go.
- 【HIGH PRECISION & SENSITIVITY】The stylus pen features a flexible disc tip that fits flexibly on the screen without leaving broken lines. Additionally, the disc tip is transparent, allowing you to get a clearer view when writing or drawing.
Be careful when interpreting changes. The camera may be positioned slightly differently, seasons and weather can vary, and Google may combine official Street View imagery with imagery from other contributors. An apparent change is therefore useful visual evidence, but not necessarily a precise construction or removal date.
Can Google Maps show old satellite images?
This procedure is for historical Street View imagery, not a time slider for satellite or aerial imagery. Satellite imagery has separate availability and controls. If the satellite view or Street View image is outdated, Google provides a reporting route, but it does not commit to a specific replacement timeline.

Why does Google Maps show a blue line but no old images?
A blue line confirms Street View coverage, not historical coverage. Google may have no older imagery exposed for that particular position, so the See more dates option is absent.
Does historical Street View work on mobile?
Yes. Current Google Maps instructions support See more dates on Android, iPhone, and iPad, as well as on desktop.
Can I see historical Street View for an entire street?
Not necessarily. Historical availability is tied to specific Street View positions and segments. One part of a road may offer older dates while a nearby part does not.
What is the difference between historical Street View and Photo Paths?
Historical Street View is Google’s date-based gallery for available Street View imagery. Photo Paths were a separate feature; Google says they are no longer supported and new Photo Paths cannot be published.
The Bottom Line
To go back in time in Google Maps, open a specific Street View position and select See more dates, then choose an older thumbnail. The process works on desktop, Android, iPhone, and iPad. If the control is missing, try another nearby Street View position—but understand that Google may simply have no historical imagery available there.
