1. Use Snipping Tool to capture part of the screen
Snipping Tool is a flexible built-in option. It supports rectangle, freeform, window, and full-screen still-image captures.
Capture a selected area with a shortcut
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the screen capture overlay appears, choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- For Rectangle, click and drag around the part of the screen you want. With Freeform, draw around the area.
- For Window, select the window you want to capture. For Full screen, capture the screen using the overlay.
- Open the captured snip in Snipping Tool to edit, save, or share it.
The capture is available in Snipping Tool. If you only need to paste an image into an email, document, chat, or image editor, use Ctrl + V in that application.
Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu
Select Start, type Snipping Tool, and select the app from the search results. You can then use its controls to take a still-image snip.

Video snipping is a separate feature from taking a still screenshot. On supported versions, Windows + Shift + R opens the video capture overlay. Some advanced Snipping Tool features are limited to Copilot+ PCs.
2. Press Print Screen to copy the entire screen
Pressing PrtScn copies a full-screen image to the clipboard. The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or a similar abbreviation.
- Press PrtScn.
- Open Paint, Word, an email, or another application that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot.
- Save it from that application. In Paint, for example, select File > Save as, then choose a format.
This method copies the screenshot to the clipboard rather than saving a file directly. To check the clipboard capture, open Paint and press Ctrl + V.

3. Capture only the active window
Use this option when you want an application window without the rest of the desktop, taskbar, or other open windows.

- Press Alt + PrtScn.
- Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable application.
- Press Ctrl + V, then save or send the image.
The shortcut copies the active window to the clipboard. If you click another window before pressing the shortcut, that other window becomes the capture target.
4. Save a full-screen screenshot automatically
Windows + PrtScn captures the entire screen and saves it as an image file.

- Press Windows + PrtScn.
- Open File Explorer.
- Open Pictures, then Screenshots.
- Find the screenshot file in that folder.
Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space as a device-dependent alternative when a keyboard does not have a PrtScn key.

Common screenshot problems
Nothing happens after pressing Print Screen
The image may be in the clipboard rather than saved as a file. Open Paint and press Ctrl + V. If that does not work, try Windows + Shift + S.

The laptop shortcut does not work
Keyboard layouts and key availability vary by device. If your keyboard has no PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space as a possible screenshot shortcut. You can also use Snipping Tool with Windows + Shift + S.
