If OneDrive is not starting in Windows 11 or Windows 10, first check whether it is running invisibly, then repair its startup entry or reset the sync client. Resetting can help when the desktop client’s configuration is damaged, but it disconnects sync accounts and clears selective-folder choices, so account setup may be needed again.
This guide covers missing taskbar icons, disabled startup settings, failed reset commands, Microsoft Store app confusion, work or school policy blocks, Files On-Demand errors, and specific OneDrive error codes.
1. Check whether OneDrive is already running
OneDrive normally displays a white or blue cloud icon in the notification area at the far right of the Windows taskbar. Select Show hidden icons if you do not see it immediately.
If the icon is missing, start OneDrive manually:
- Open Start.
- Type OneDrive.
- Select OneDrive or OneDrive desktop app from the results.
Wait briefly. If the cloud icon appears, OneDrive was installed but was not starting automatically. If nothing happens, continue with the startup and reset checks below.

2. Enable OneDrive in Windows startup
Use Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find OneDrive.
- Set its toggle to On.
Restart Windows and check whether the cloud icon appears after signing in.
Use Task Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Task Manager.
- Open the Startup apps tab.
- Select OneDrive.
- Select Enable.
If OneDrive is set to Disable, Windows will not launch it automatically.
If OneDrive is missing from both startup lists
You can create a startup shortcut manually:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter shell:appsfolder and select OK. Leave the File Explorer window open.
- Press Windows key + R again.
- Enter shell:startup and select OK. This opens the startup folder for your user account.
- Drag the OneDrive application from the first File Explorer window into the startup-folder window.
shell:startup points to %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. To create the entry for every user on the computer, use shell:common startup instead. That folder is %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.
3. Remove a broken OneDrive startup entry
Windows Settings can show a startup item with the message “We couldn’t find this app”. This usually means the application was uninstalled, its executable path no longer exists, or it was located on a disconnected removable or network drive.

Select the icon beside the startup toggle to view the registry location or file path associated with the broken entry. Remove the stale entry only after confirming that it does not point to a valid OneDrive installation. Then install or start the current desktop client and add it to startup using the steps above.
4. Reset the OneDrive desktop client
Resetting is a useful next step when OneDrive does not open, the cloud icon never appears, or the client behaves as though its configuration is damaged.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter this command exactly: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset.
- Select OK.
- Start OneDrive manually: open Start, type OneDrive, and select the OneDrive desktop app.
Resetting deletes OneDrive’s DAT file, stores application logs in the registry, stores settings on disk, and rebuilds the DAT file when OneDrive starts again. Microsoft states that the process does not delete your files or cloud data.
Important: Reset disconnects existing sync connections, including personal OneDrive and OneDrive for work or school. After synchronization completes, you may need to choose your selective-sync folders again for each account.
If Windows cannot find the reset command
Try these commands in order:
- Enter C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset in the Run dialog.
- If Windows still cannot find the file, enter C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset.
If all three commands fail, the OneDrive sync app is not installed. Reinstall the desktop client as described below.

5. Make sure you have the correct OneDrive app
Windows can have two different OneDrive apps installed:
| App | What it does |
|---|---|
| Microsoft OneDrive | The website-download backup and sync application. This is the client that synchronizes files and backs up folders. |
| OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation | The Microsoft Store app. It lets you view OneDrive files but does not back up or synchronize files. |
Installing the Store app is not a replacement for the desktop sync client. Both apps may be installed at the same time.
6. Reset or reinstall the Microsoft Store app
If you specifically use the Store version, press Start, enter apps:onedrive, select App settings, scroll down, and select Reset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsResetting this Store app does not turn it into the desktop synchronization client. If your goal is file backup or folder synchronization, install the desktop version from Microsoft’s website.
7. Reinstall OneDrive
Reinstall the desktop client if the reset commands fail, OneDrive is absent from the Start menu, or its files are damaged.
- Open Start, type Programs, and select Add or remove programs.
- Under Apps & features, find Microsoft OneDrive.
- Select it, then select Uninstall.
- Download the Microsoft OneDrive app from Microsoft’s website.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Sign in again and choose the folders you want to synchronize.
Uninstalling stops the local OneDrive folder from syncing, but it does not delete your cloud files. You can still access them by signing in to OneDrive.com.
Fix error 0x8004def4
Error 0x8004def4 can occur when the desktop sync app is used while the OneDrive Store app is also installed. Uninstall all OneDrive app versions, then reinstall the latest desktop OneDrive sync app. Do not reinstall only the Store viewer if you need synchronization.
8. Check for a work or school Group Policy block
On a managed computer, OneDrive may show no sign-in prompt, synchronize nothing without displaying an error, or fail to respond when you select Settings in the Add a Business account dialog.
One cause is a policy that prevents onedrive.exe from starting. To inspect it, open Registry Editor and check:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive
Look for this value:
DisableFileSyncNGSC = DWORD:1
For OneDrive for work or school to synchronize, Microsoft says this value must be removed or changed to 0. If Group Policy created it, change the policy itself instead of only editing the registry.

A manual registry change may not last. The policy can be reapplied after a restart, Windows sign-in, or a periodic policy update. Contact your organization’s IT administrator if the computer is managed.
9. Fix error 0x80070005 during an update
For error 0x80070005, first install all available Windows updates:
- Open Start.
- Type Updates.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart if Windows requests it.
Then run the OneDrive updater directly:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\update.
- Select OK.
- Double-click OneDriveSetup.exe.
10. Fix “Couldn’t start Files on Demand”
Legacy antivirus filter drivers can prevent Files On-Demand from starting. Update your antivirus software first. If OneDrive opens, change the Files On-Demand setting:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon.
- Select OneDrive Help and Settings.
- Select Settings.
- Open Sync and back up.
- Expand Advanced settings.
- Under Files On-Demand, select either Free up disk space or Download all files.
11. Handle specific OneDrive errors
Error 0x80048823: authenticated proxy
If OneDrive reports “Your proxy settings require authentication” with error 0x80048823, the network is using an authenticated proxy. Microsoft states that authenticated proxies are not supported in OneDrive. A network administrator must provide a supported proxy configuration or an alternative network path.
Duplicate files containing the computer name
If OneDrive creates duplicate files whose names contain the computer name, close OneDrive and open this location with Windows key + R:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings\PreSignInSettingsConfig.json
Delete PreSignInSettingsConfig.json, then start OneDrive again.

- Open Start, type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run chkdsk <volume> /R /F, replacing <volume> with the drive letter followed by a colon.
For example, use chkdsk C: /R /F if the OneDrive files are on drive C:. If Windows asks to schedule the check at the next restart, enter Y, press Enter, and restart. The check can take several hours.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.12. Check Windows and OneDrive support status
The current OneDrive sync app requires Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11 to receive updates. Microsoft says that after August 15, 2026, devices running earlier Windows 10 versions will remain on their installed OneDrive version and will not receive new releases.
Release rollouts are gradual, so the version shown on Microsoft’s release-notes page may not exactly match the newest version already installed on a particular computer. Also, if you are troubleshooting offline mode, do not search only for the old Microsoft.SharePoint.exe process name. Newer OneDrive versions use Microsoft OneDrive Sync Service, shown as OneDrive.Sync.Service.exe.
Recommended repair order
- Look for the cloud icon under Show hidden icons.
- Launch OneDrive from Start manually.
- Enable OneDrive under Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager.
- Run the primary reset command.
- Try the two reset-command path fallbacks if necessary.
- Check whether the Store viewer was installed instead of the desktop sync client.
- Reinstall Microsoft OneDrive if the client is missing or damaged.
- On work or school PCs, have an administrator check the Group Policy setting.
- Use the error-specific fixes for updates, Files On-Demand, proxy authentication, or file-system errors.
FAQ
Does resetting OneDrive delete my files?
No. Microsoft states that reset does not delete files or OneDrive data. It does disconnect existing personal and work or school sync connections and removes selective-folder choices, which must be configured again.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy does OneDrive not appear in Windows startup settings?
The installation may be incomplete, or the startup entry may be broken. Use shell:appsfolder and shell:startup to drag the OneDrive application into the current user’s startup folder. If Settings says “We couldn’t find this app,” inspect the broken path before removing it.
Is the OneDrive Microsoft Store app the sync client?
No. OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation from the Microsoft Store is primarily a file viewer and does not back up or synchronize files. Install Microsoft OneDrive, the desktop app downloaded from Microsoft’s website, for synchronization.
What should I do if OneDrive works until I restart Windows?
Enable OneDrive under Start > Settings > Apps > Startup or in Task Manager’s Startup apps tab. If it is not listed, create a shortcut in the startup folder with shell:startup.
Why does OneDrive do nothing on my work or school computer?
A Group Policy setting may block the sync client. Check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive for DisableFileSyncNGSC set to 1. Managed computers should be corrected by the organization’s IT administrator because the policy can reapply the value.

Uninstall Microsoft OneDrive from Start > Add or remove programs, then download and run the desktop installer from Microsoft’s website. Uninstalling stops local synchronization but does not delete cloud data; the files remain available at OneDrive.com.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations, the practical sequence is: launch OneDrive from Start, enable its startup entry, run %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset, and reinstall the desktop client if the command cannot find the executable. Treat Store-app installation, work or school policies, authenticated proxies, and Files On-Demand as separate causes rather than repeatedly resetting the same installation.
