You can add AOL Mail to Windows 11 using either New Outlook or classic Outlook. Check whether your Outlook window has a File tab: if it does, follow the classic Outlook steps; if it does not, follow the New Outlook steps. Adding AOL connects it to Outlook; it does not delete or convert your AOL account.
Add AOL Mail to New Outlook for Windows 11
New Outlook supports third-party email accounts, including AOL, through IMAP. To add your account:
- Open Outlook.
- Select the View tab, then View settings.
- Open Accounts, then select Your accounts.
- Under Email accounts, select Add Account.
- Enter your full AOL address, such as yourname@aol.com, and select Continue.
- Enter the requested AOL password or app password.
- Select Done.
You can also reach the account area through File > Account info > Accounts > Your accounts > Add Account, if that route is available in your version of New Outlook.
If New Outlook asks for an app password
Microsoft documents the message, “Please create an app password for Outlook on your email provider’s site.” If AOL rejects your regular password, create an AOL third-party app password and enter the generated password in Outlook instead.

- Open AOL’s Create and manage app password page.
- Sign in to your AOL account if prompted.
- Create an app password for the mail application you are setting up.
- Copy the generated password and paste it into Outlook’s password field.
Add AOL Mail to classic Outlook
Classic Outlook includes the traditional ribbon and File tab. Microsoft’s current account instructions cover Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, and Outlook 2016.
- Open classic Outlook.
- Select File, then Add Account.
- Enter your AOL email address and select Connect.
- If prompted, enter your AOL password or AOL-generated app password.
- Select OK, then Finish.
Use manual IMAP setup in classic Outlook
If automatic setup fails, classic Outlook lets you configure the account manually using IMAP:
- Select File > Add Account.
- Enter your AOL email address.
- Select Advanced options and turn on Let me set up my account manually.
- Select Connect, then choose IMAP.
- Enter the incoming and outgoing server settings requested by Outlook, using the settings provided by AOL.
- Select Next, enter your AOL password or app password, and select Connect.
Microsoft’s manual setup instructions identify this classic Outlook flow as the route for entering server, port, or encryption details. Use AOL’s current settings if Outlook requests them.

What to do when AOL will not connect
Outlook says the password is incorrect
AOL may require an app password for the IMAP connection even when your regular password is correct. Create a third-party app password through AOL and enter that generated password in Outlook.
Automatic setup fails
In classic Outlook, use File > Add Account > Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually > Connect > IMAP. New Outlook’s documented setup uses View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Add Account; Microsoft’s instructions do not provide an equivalent manual server-entry flow there.
You cannot find the “Try the new Outlook” switch
The switch may be absent because the account is not supported or an administrator has blocked it. You can continue using classic Outlook and add AOL through File > Add Account.

New Outlook shows an Import Settings window
When switching from classic Outlook or Windows Mail and Calendar, New Outlook may show an Import Settings dialog. Select Import Settings to bring across available settings, or select Skip to continue without importing them.
Remove AOL from Outlook
Removing AOL from Outlook disconnects the account from the app; it does not delete your AOL mailbox.
New Outlook
- Select View > View settings.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Find the AOL account and select Manage, then Remove.
- If prompted, choose whether to remove the non-Microsoft IMAP account from only this device or from all devices.
Classic Outlook
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the AOL account, then select Remove.
- Select Yes to confirm.
In classic Outlook, removing the account deletes locally cached content and stops Outlook from sending and receiving through that account. Your AOL mailbox is not deleted.

FAQ
Why does Outlook reject my correct AOL password?
AOL may require an app password for third-party IMAP access. Create an AOL app password and enter that generated password in Outlook instead of your regular password.
Can I add AOL Mail through Windows 11 Settings?
Microsoft’s current account instructions use New Outlook or classic Outlook. In New Outlook, go to View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Add Account. In classic Outlook, go to File > Add Account.
Should I choose POP or IMAP for AOL in Outlook?
Choose IMAP if you are setting up the account manually in classic Outlook. Use AOL’s current server settings if Outlook asks for them.

Will removing AOL from Outlook delete my AOL emails?
No. Removing the account disconnects it from Outlook and removes local cached content as described for classic Outlook, but it does not delete the AOL mailbox.
Why is there no File tab in my Outlook window?
You are likely using New Outlook. Use View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Add Account instead of the classic Outlook path.
