A cumulative update preview for Windows 11 is an optional, non-security update that Microsoft releases before the next regular monthly security update. It contains production-quality bug fixes, reliability improvements, and sometimes new features. You can install it early if it fixes a problem you are experiencing, but you do not need it to keep Windows protected against newly discovered security vulnerabilities.
The word cumulative means the package includes the current release’s applicable fixes together with previously released fixes. If earlier updates are already installed, Windows normally downloads only the new content required by your device.
What “preview” means
“Preview” describes the update’s release timing and channel. Microsoft makes the update available before the following month’s security release so users and organizations can test the included non-security improvements. Microsoft describes the contents as production-quality improvements; this is not the same thing as installing an Insider beta build.
It is still sensible to treat an optional preview differently from a required security update. A preview can change Windows behavior, address a particular hardware or application problem, or introduce a feature before the normal monthly release. If your PC is working properly and you do not need one of its fixes, waiting is a reasonable choice.

Preview update versus security update
| Update type | Purpose | Is it required? | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cumulative update preview | Non-security fixes, quality improvements, reliability changes, and sometimes features | No | Before the next monthly security update |
| Monthly security update | Security fixes, plus applicable non-security fixes | Windows expects you to install it | Normally the second Tuesday of the month |
The next monthly security update generally carries the preview’s non-security fixes forward. For example, Microsoft stated that the June 2026 security update included non-security updates from the previous month’s optional preview release. Therefore, skipping a preview normally does not mean permanently losing its fixes; you will usually receive them later as part of the regular cumulative update.
Why is it called cumulative?
A cumulative update is not just a standalone fix for one newly reported problem. It includes the current package’s changes and all earlier applicable fixes for that Windows version. Windows uses the updates already installed on the device to determine what content is still needed, so the download is not necessarily the full package size.
This also makes cumulative updates useful for devices that have been offline or recently reset. A supported device can generally move to the latest applicable build without installing every previous monthly update separately.
Example: the latest dated 24H2 and 25H2 preview
The latest dated preview identified in the supplied Microsoft release information is July 28, 2026—KB5101684. It applies to all editions of Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 and produces these builds:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Windows version | Resulting OS build |
|---|---|
| Windows 11 25H2 | 26200.8973 |
| Windows 11 24H2 | 26100.8973 |
That example is useful because the KB number identifies the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, while the OS build tells you which Windows build is installed after the update. To check your build, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter. You can also open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications.
How to install a Windows 11 cumulative update preview
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Under Optional updates available, look for the cumulative update. Microsoft may label the action Check for optional updates.
- Select the update’s download-and-install option, then restart Windows when prompted.
The preview might not appear immediately. Microsoft can use a gradual rollout, which means availability varies between devices. A managed business PC may also be controlled by Windows Update for Business policies. In that situation, the preview’s changes may be marked Not included in the preview deployment channel and delivered with the next security update instead.

Should you install it?
Install the preview when its release notes mention a problem you need fixed, or when you want to validate the update on a test computer before a wider rollout. Before doing so, save open work and make sure you have a current backup or another recovery method.
Waiting is usually preferable when the computer is business-critical, when you are troubleshooting an unrelated problem, or when the preview offers no benefit for your setup. Because the next security update normally includes the preview’s non-security changes, waiting does not usually leave you without those quality fixes indefinitely.

Servicing Stack Updates and installation components
Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) with the latest cumulative update (LCU) for current Windows 11 releases. The SSU updates the Windows component responsible for installing updates. This is why a cumulative package can update both the operating system’s fixes and the update-installation infrastructure.

Offline images and the boot.stl problem
If you are maintaining Windows installation media or applying dynamic updates to an image, pay attention to the boot.stl file. Applying a dynamic update to an existing image without the required file can prevent devices from starting from the installation media and can produce error 0xc0430001.
The boot.stl file must match the Windows version and architecture of the image. Microsoft recommends using the Update WinPE script or manually copying boot.stl from Windows\Boot\EFI to the corresponding installation-media folder.

Preview availability depends on the Windows release installed, not just the fact that the device runs Windows 11.
- Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro: updates end on October 13, 2026.
- Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education: supported until October 12, 2027.
- Windows 11 23H2: KB5070312, released November 20, 2025, was the final preview for that version. Supported 23H2 editions receive monthly security updates afterward, but no further preview releases.
- Windows 11 26H1: preview releases also exist. One example is KB5095091, released June 23, 2026, which produced build 28000.2340 for all editions of version 26H1.
When support for an edition ends, it no longer receives the relevant fixes, time-zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates through the normal supported channel.

- “Every PC gets it on the same day.” No. Gradual rollout and device-management policies can delay or suppress its appearance.
- “The preview disappears when the security update arrives.” No. Its non-security fixes are normally included in the later security update.

FAQ
Is a Windows 11 cumulative update preview safe?
It contains production-quality improvements, but it is optional and can still expose device-specific driver or application problems. Read the release notes and install it when you need its fixes or are testing it, rather than treating it as mandatory.
Best Value
- The things you do most are right at your fingertips with one-touch controls for instant access to play/pause, volume, mute and the Internet.
- Comfortable low-profile keys: Enjoy fast, fluid quiet typing on a familiar standard layout, including number pad.
- High-definition optical mouse: Smooth, responsive cursor control from a comfortable sculpted mouse.
- Sleek and durable design: Thin profile, spill-resistant design, durable keys and sturdy adjustable tilt legs. Tested under limited conditions (maximum of 60 ml liquid spillage). Do not immerse keyboard in liquid.
- Plug-and-play PC compatibility: Simple USB connection. Works with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or later or Linux kernel 2.6 or later.
What happens if I do not install the preview update?
Usually nothing urgent. The following monthly security update generally includes the preview’s applicable non-security fixes, so you can wait for that release.
Why cannot I see the preview under Optional updates?
Microsoft may be rolling it out gradually, so it may not yet be offered to your device. On managed PCs, Windows Update for Business policy may defer the changes until the next security update.
Can I uninstall a cumulative update preview?
Windows may allow a recently installed quality update to be removed through Settings or the recovery environment, but removal options depend on the package, timing, and management policy. Check the exact KB article and keep a recovery method before installing.
How do I identify which Windows 11 preview I have?
Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. For the KB number and installation history, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.

A Windows 11 cumulative update preview is an optional, non-security release offered ahead of the next monthly security update. It is intended for early access to production-quality fixes and changes, not for replacing security updates. Install it when you need a listed fix or want to test it; otherwise, waiting is normally safe because the next security update generally includes the preview’s non-security improvements.
