A 1drv.ms address is a shortened Microsoft OneDrive sharing link. It is not a separate cloud-storage service. When one fails, the cause is usually the link’s permissions, its status, the sign-in account being used, or a local browser/network problem—not the fact that the URL uses the 1drv.ms domain.
Use the checks below in order. The fastest distinction is whether the link fails for everyone or only on your device.
What a 1drv.ms link is
Microsoft uses https://1drv.ms to shorten OneDrive sharing URLs. The short address redirects to the shared file or folder in OneDrive. A working link can open in a browser, the OneDrive app, or both, depending on the account, permissions, device, and age of the link.
Do not assume that every failure is a DNS problem. A link can be inaccessible because it was deleted, moved, expired, restricted to particular people, or created under an organization’s sharing policy.

First identify the failure
| What happens | Most likely explanation |
|---|---|
| You see a permission or sign-in message | The link is restricted, or you are signed in with the wrong Microsoft account. |
| The URL opens but says the item cannot be found | The item was moved, deleted, or sharing was stopped. |
The address stops at https://1drv.ms/ |
The URL may be truncated or altered, or your network may be resolving the hostname incorrectly. |
| It works for someone else but not you | Your account, browser session, app, or network is the likely cause. |
| It fails for everyone | The owner probably needs to create a new link, or OneDrive may be experiencing an incident. |
| The link opens in a browser instead of the app | This can be normal when the sender uses another company, you lack permission, or the link is an older type. |
Correct the common causes
1. Check that the complete link was copied
Ask the sender to send the link again, preferably by copying it directly from OneDrive. Do not manually retype it. A shortened URL can stop working if part of the address is removed by email software, messaging apps, line wrapping, or a copy-and-paste error.
Compare the link with the original message. It should begin with https://1drv.ms/ and contain characters after the final slash. If the browser reaches only https://1drv.ms/, obtain a fresh copy rather than changing browser settings immediately.
2. Sign in to OneDrive before opening the link
Microsoft documents a workaround for some shared-file sign-in failures:
- Open onedrive.com in a new browser tab.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should have access.
- Return to the original
1drv.mslink and open it again.
This matters for links shared with a work or school account. It also avoids having the browser silently use a personal Microsoft account when the permission belongs to an organizational account.
If the owner selected Specific people, only the named recipients can open the link. Forwarding it does not grant access to another person. Ask the owner to add your exact email address or create a different link.
3. Test the link in a private window or another browser
Open the address in an InPrivate or Incognito window. If it works there, the normal browser probably has a stale Microsoft session, blocked cookies, an extension conflict, or cached redirect data.
Then try these practical corrections:
- Sign out of unnecessary Microsoft accounts and sign back in to the correct one.
- Temporarily disable privacy, script-blocking, or corporate security extensions.
- Allow cookies and redirects for Microsoft and OneDrive sites.
- Update the browser and try a second browser.
- Copy the link into the address bar instead of opening it from a preview pane.
4. Try OneDrive.com instead of the mobile app
A shared link may open in a browser rather than the OneDrive app when it comes from another company, when your account lacks permission, or when the link is old and does not support opening in the mobile app. That behavior does not by itself mean the 1drv.ms address is invalid.
On a phone, open the link in the browser first, complete any sign-in or verification prompt, and then use the available option to open it in OneDrive if one appears. If the app repeatedly fails, update it and use OneDrive.com as a comparison.

5. Have the owner check or recreate the sharing link
The owner should not simply resend an old address if the item was moved or its sharing status changed. Microsoft says a link can stop working after the file or folder is moved within OneDrive, or after sharing is stopped. A new sharing link is then required.
To inspect the current permission:
- Open OneDrive and select the file or folder.
- Select Information in the upper-right corner.
- In the Details pane, find Has Access and select Manage access.
- Review the people and links listed there.
- To remove a stale link, select the X beside it and confirm Remove link.
- Create a new link and send that new address.
If a file was moved into an already shared folder, it may need to be shared again so that the new item is included under the intended permissions.
Create a replacement link with the correct permissions
The owner can create a new link from the current OneDrive web interface:
- Sign in at onedrive.com.
- Select the file or folder.
- Select Share, then select the Settings gear.
- Choose the appropriate audience: Anyone, People in <Your Organization> with the link, People with existing access, or Specific people.
- Choose whether recipients can edit, then select Apply.
- Select Copy and send the complete link.
Be careful with the audience selection. People with existing access does not give anyone new permission; it only supplies a link to people who already have access. Also, Allow editing is enabled by default in the documented sharing flow. For a folder, editing can allow recipients to copy, move, edit, rename, share, and delete content within the permitted scope. Turn it off when recipients only need to view or download.
Check expiration, password, and download restrictions
- Expiration: the link stops working after the selected date. The owner must create a new link afterward.
- Password: the recipient must enter the password supplied separately by the owner.
- Block download: recipients can access the item but cannot download it.
Password and expiration controls require a Microsoft 365 subscription. For folders, those controls are limited to Anyone sharing. If the owner recently changed one of these settings, creating a new link is often clearer than troubleshooting the old one.
Work or school account restrictions
An organization’s administrator can disable Anyone links. In that case, the owner may still be able to create a link, but access is limited to people in the organization. A missing or greyed-out sharing option can also indicate an organizational policy.
Ask the sender whether the item belongs to a personal OneDrive or a work/school OneDrive. If it is organizational content, the owner may need to select People in <Your Organization> with the link or add you as a specific guest, subject to company policy.
For administrators, Microsoft documents the Check SharePoint User Access diagnostic for investigating access problems. It requires a Microsoft 365 administrator account and is not available for Microsoft 365 Government, Microsoft 365 operated by 21Vianet, or Microsoft 365 Germany.

Special cases that look like broken links
Personal Vault
Files in OneDrive Personal Vault cannot be shared. The owner must move the file or folder outside Personal Vault and share it from the normal OneDrive area.
Shared-folder shortcut appears as a .url file
Microsoft has documented an issue where a shortcut to a shared folder in My Files appears as a .url Internet Shortcut rather than a real folder. Opening it launches a webpage and may request sign-in. The content can still be reached through OneDrive.com; use the web version rather than treating the shortcut as a normal synchronized folder.
File Explorer or Finder has no Share option
Desktop sharing requires the OneDrive application to be installed and running. If it is not installed, or the sync app is stopped, sharing from File Explorer or Finder is unavailable. Use OneDrive.com instead, or start and sign in to the OneDrive desktop app before trying again.
When the problem may be the network or DNS
If the full link fails on multiple browsers but works on another connection, test the network:
- Open the link using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or try another network.
- Restart the router and computer.
- Check whether a company firewall, DNS filter, antivirus web shield, or proxy blocks Microsoft domains.
- Ask the network administrator whether
1drv.msredirects are being filtered.
Some Microsoft Q&A reports describe links failing because the hostname resolves incorrectly. Older community answers also suggested changing DNS and running Windows network-reset commands. Those are not identified by Microsoft’s current OneDrive support pages as a general 1drv.ms fix, so use them only as network troubleshooting—not as the first explanation.
If you are testing a Windows network, these commands can reset common local networking state. Run them individually in an elevated Command Prompt, then restart Windows:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Avoid adding a permanent 1drv.ms entry to C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. A static IP can become wrong when Microsoft changes its infrastructure and may make the problem worse.
Check for a Microsoft service problem
If the link fails for the sender and several recipients, check Microsoft’s service status and OneDrive’s issue page. Microsoft directs users with current access problems to the Service Health portal. OneDrive synchronization is also no longer supported on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, although a browser may still provide access.

For SharePoint-backed work or school libraries, a sharing failure can display “Sorry, we’re unable to reach the server right now.” Microsoft lists causes including site access-request settings, insufficient site storage, a folder exceeding the 50,000 shared-items limit, and too many unique security scopes. These require the site owner or administrator to correct the SharePoint configuration; changing your browser DNS will not fix them.
A short diagnostic sequence
- Confirm the URL is complete and starts with
https://1drv.ms/. - Open
onedrive.com, sign in to the expected account, and retry. - Try a private window, another browser, and another network.
- Ask another authorized recipient whether the link works.
- If nobody can open it, ask the owner to inspect Manage access and create a new link.
- If the owner cannot share it, check organization restrictions, Personal Vault, desktop-app status, storage, and SharePoint limits.
- Check Microsoft service health if several unrelated links fail at the same time.
FAQ
Is 1drv.ms a legitimate Microsoft link?
Yes. Microsoft identifies https://1drv.ms as its shortened OneDrive sharing URL. The domain itself is not a separate file-hosting service or proof that the link is unsafe. Still, only open links you expected to receive and verify the sender.
Why does a 1drv.ms link ask me to sign in?
The link may be limited to specific people, or your browser may be signed in to the wrong Microsoft account. Sign in at onedrive.com first with the account that was granted access, then open the link again.
Can I open a Specific people link after someone forwards it to me?
No. Forwarding does not transfer permission. The owner must add your email address or create a link with an audience that includes you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does the link work in a browser but not the OneDrive app?
Microsoft says this can happen with links from another company, links for which you lack permission, or older links that do not support mobile-app opening. Browser access does not prove the link is broken.
What should the owner do if a OneDrive link has expired or stopped working?
Select the item, open Information, choose Manage access under Has Access, remove the stale link if appropriate, and create a new sharing link. A new link is also needed after an item is moved or an expiration date passes.
Does People with existing access give me permission?
No. That option only creates a link for people who already have access. It does not add new recipients.
Can files in Personal Vault be shared?
No. Move the file or folder outside Personal Vault, then share it from the regular OneDrive area.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Should I change DNS whenever a 1drv.ms link fails?
No. DNS is only one possibility reported in some Microsoft Q&A cases. Permissions, sign-in state, expired links, moved files, organization policies, app behavior, and service incidents are also documented causes. Test the link on another network before changing DNS.
The Bottom Line
Start with the complete URL and the correct Microsoft sign-in, then test a private browser window and another network. If the link fails for every authorized recipient, the owner should inspect Manage access and create a replacement link. Only after those checks should you investigate DNS, firewalls, or a Microsoft service incident.
