Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 11 does not currently let you pin individual contacts to the taskbar. The feature many older guides describe belonged to the Windows 10 People app. Microsoft removed that app from Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, and ended its support on December 31, 2024.
If you are using an older Windows 10 installation, you may still be able to pin contacts through the People taskbar feature. On current Windows 11, the supported replacement is managing contacts in new Outlook—not adding individual Outlook contacts as taskbar buttons.
Can you pin a contact to the Windows taskbar?
It depends on the version of Windows:
| Windows version | Can you natively pin individual contacts? | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11, version 24H2 and later | No | New Outlook for contact management |
| Earlier Windows 11 releases | The former People feature is not a reliable or supported option | New Outlook or a web shortcut |
| Windows 10 editions that support People | Yes, through the People taskbar feature | People app |
| Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 | No—the My People taskbar experience is not supported | Outlook or another contact-management method |
Windows 11 still allows you to pin applications to the taskbar, but that is different from pinning an individual person. Creating a shortcut to Outlook, a mail website, or a contact page does not recreate the old People contact buttons or People flyout.
How to pin a contact on supported Windows 10 PCs
These steps apply only to Windows 10 installations that still include the supported People taskbar feature.

- Computer mouse for easily navigating a computer interface; click, scroll, and more
- USB-A wired connection; if existing device only supports USB-C, an additional adapter will be required
- High-definition (1000 dpi) optical tracking ensures responsive cursor control for precise tracking and easy text selection
- 3 buttons offer effortless fingertip control
- Plug-and-go ready for instant use
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Show People on the taskbar.
- Select the People icon that appears on the taskbar.
- Select an existing contact, or choose Find and pin contacts.
- Select the contact you want to pin.
The contact appears next to the People icon. Depending on the connected account and available services, selecting the contact could provide email through Mail or calling and messaging through Skype. Skype actions required the contact to have a Skype account; video calls also required a webcam for both participants.
Only three contacts appear directly
The People taskbar shows a maximum of three pinned contacts directly on the taskbar, according to Microsoft Support’s People app help. If you pin more, select the People icon and open More pinned contacts to see the rest.
You can select a pinned contact and drag it to change its position. With more than three contacts, dragging can also move a contact between the visible taskbar area and More pinned contacts.
Unpin a contact
Right-click the contact, or press and hold it on a touchscreen, and select Unpin from taskbar.

What to do on Windows 11
Microsoft directs Windows users to new Outlook for contact management. This lets you find and maintain the contact, but Microsoft does not document a supported way to turn an individual Outlook contact into a standalone Windows 11 taskbar button.
- Open new Outlook.
- Select People in the navigation pane.
- Use the search box to search by contact name, phone number, or company.
- Select the contact to view or edit its details.
New Outlook supports creating, finding, editing, and deleting contacts. It does not restore the Windows 10 People integration.
Why the People option is missing
Windows 11 version 24H2 or later
This is expected. Microsoft removed the People app from Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. The old ms-people: URI scheme is also no longer functional on modern Windows 11 installations.
Installing an old People app package, if you find one, is not a supported fix. It will not reliably restore the taskbar integration, contact buttons, or People flyout.

Windows 10 with a managed taskbar
On Windows 10, an administrator can disable the feature with the Remove the People Bar from the taskbar policy. The Group Policy path is:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Remove the People Bar from the taskbar
The corresponding policy/CSP name is HidePeopleBar. When enabled, Windows removes the People icon and the related taskbar setting, so users cannot pin contacts. On a work or school computer, ask the administrator to check this policy rather than changing it yourself.
The app is present but contacts are missing
The old feature depended on the People app and its connected account data. It was not a general shortcut system that could pin any name, phone number, or email address. An installed app package by itself does not guarantee that the contact integration will work.

Practical alternatives for Windows 11
If you need one-click access to a particular person, use a shortcut to the service where you normally communicate:
- New Outlook: keep the contact in Outlook and search for it from People.
- Webmail: create a browser shortcut to your mail provider, then pin the browser app or shortcut where supported. This opens the service, not a native Windows contact button.
- Messaging services: use the service’s own desktop app or a browser-installed app, if it supports direct conversation shortcuts.
- Phone numbers: store the number in your phone or contact service; Windows does not provide a built-in taskbar contact dialer.
Be careful with guides that tell you to open ms-people: or right-click any contact shortcut and choose Pin to taskbar. Those instructions either target the retired Windows 10 People feature or pin an application/shortcut—not an individual contact integrated into Windows.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final general-release version, and Microsoft ended general support on October 14, 2025. Existing Long-Term Servicing Channel editions have separate support lifecycles. If you are keeping an older Windows 10 computer solely for the People taskbar feature, consider the security and support implications before relying on it.
For current systems, the short answer is straightforward: use the People section in new Outlook to manage contacts, but do not expect to pin individual Outlook contacts directly to the Windows 11 taskbar.

FAQ
Can I pin an individual contact to the Windows 11 taskbar?
No. Current Windows 11 does not provide a supported native feature for pinning individual contacts to the taskbar. The old People app was removed from Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.
Why can’t I find “Show People on the taskbar”?
On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, the option is missing because Microsoft removed the People app. On Windows 10, an administrator may also have disabled it with the HidePeopleBar policy.
Does the ms-people: command restore contact pinning?
No. Microsoft says the old ms-people: URI scheme is no longer functional on modern Windows 11 installations.
How many contacts could Windows 10 show on the taskbar?
Windows 10 showed the first three pinned contacts directly, as described in Microsoft Support’s People app help. Additional contacts appeared under More pinned contacts in the People flyout.
Can I pin an Outlook contact directly to the Windows 11 taskbar?
Microsoft’s current Outlook documentation supports managing contacts in new Outlook, but does not provide a supported feature for pinning individual Outlook contacts as standalone taskbar buttons.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Individual contact pinning is a retired Windows 10 feature, not a current Windows 11 capability. On a supported Windows 10 PC, enable Show People on the taskbar and choose the contact. On Windows 11, use new Outlook > People to find and manage contacts; avoid old ms-people: workarounds because they no longer restore the feature.
