What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Microsoft is retiring the legacy Keyboard troubleshooter that ran through the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), so do not assume it is available in Windows 11 or Windows 10. Microsoft’s current Get Help troubleshooter catalog does not list a keyboard-specific troubleshooter. If the old tool is missing, check the keyboard’s layout and accessibility settings, identify whether the problem is physical, and consult support for the exact device when needed.
Start by identifying the symptom: the keyboard does not work, some keys fail, unexpected characters appear, or keystrokes are ignored or repeated. The right next step depends on what is happening.
Is there a Keyboard troubleshooter in Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Microsoft says it is retiring legacy inbox troubleshooters, including the Keyboard troubleshooter, as part of the MSDT retirement. Availability may vary during the transition, so do not rely on an old guide’s Settings or Control Panel path as a guaranteed fix. If you do not see the tool, that alone does not mean Windows is damaged.
Microsoft’s current Windows troubleshooters catalog describes troubleshooters available through Get Help, but does not list one specifically for keyboards. To check for relevant help:

How to fix keyboard problems
Check the language and keyboard layout if keys type wrong characters
If the keys work but produce unexpected characters, Windows may have a different input layout selected. Review your installed language and keyboard layouts, then select the intended layout. Microsoft’s instructions for managing language and keyboard/input layout settings cover Windows.

In Windows 11, language and regional settings are under Settings > Time & language; in Windows 10, labels or navigation may differ. Remove layouts you do not use if they make it easier to select the correct one.
Review accessibility keyboard settings if keystrokes are ignored or behave differently
Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and other keyboard settings can change how keystrokes behave. If the problem began after a settings change, review the keyboard accessibility options and turn off settings you do not need. Microsoft provides Windows 11 and Windows 10 guidance in its Surface Pro Keyboard and Type Cover troubleshooting instructions; menu labels can vary by Windows version.
